Midway through the season, who is the best team in the NFL?

At the end of week 8, here are the playoff standings. 19 teams either have a winning record or are in a playoff position. And that doesn't include a couple others that are within a game of a playoff spot.

1 Denver 6-1
2 New England 6-2

3 Cincinnati 4-2-1
6 Buffalo 5-3

4 Indianapolis 5-3
5 San Diego 5-3

Baltimore 5-3
Pittsburgh 5-3
Kansas City 4-3
Miami 4-3
Cleveland 4-3

---

1 Arizona 6-1
2 Detroit 6-2

3 Dallas 6-2
6 Green Bay 5-3

4 Carolina 3-4-1
5 Philadelphia 5-2

San Fran 4-3
Seattle 4-3

Direckshun 10-27-2014 10:43 PM

I really like what Zona is doing, but I gotta give it to the Donks.

Manning is in HOF form right now, and that defense looks like the best in the AFC.

Pablo 10-27-2014 10:44 PM

Broncos.

Hammock Parties 10-27-2014 10:45 PM

The Steelers.

I'm telling you, they are back.

The win over the Colts wasn't an accident.

I see a Steelers-Broncos AFCC, with Big Ben being just a bit better than old fart Manning at that point.

Steel men are coming.

Buehler445 10-27-2014 10:45 PM

****in donks.

**** the donks.

Direckshun 10-27-2014 10:46 PM

Why, in this hypothetical, does San Diego get in over us with an identical record?

We have the tie breaker.

The Chargers currently have a 5-3 record. We have a 4-3 record. You may need to look up the definition of identical. Those are the playoff seedings as they stand right now, tiebreakers included.

Direckshun 10-27-2014 10:50 PM

I forgot they haven't had a bye week yet.

I tell you if them ****s win the Super Bowl this year I am going take a year off from watching football.

tk13 10-27-2014 10:56 PM

But yes, if you want to extrapolate... if the Chiefs win the next two weeks, they will hold a playoff spot at the conclusion of week 10 no matter what everyone else does. We'd hold the tiebreaker over SD after their bye week. We'd have beaten Buffalo to knock them below us, and Pittsburgh/Baltimore play this week, so one of them will lose.

Pablo 10-27-2014 10:57 PM

Who's going to stop them this year? That's what really blows. Seattle better get their shit together.

tk13 10-27-2014 10:59 PM

The Chiefs also have the best strength of victory in the AFC by a significant margin. I guess that's one advantage to losing to Tennessee.

Direckshun 10-27-2014 11:03 PM

What is strength of victory?

And how different is it than strength of schedule?

BlackOp 10-27-2014 11:06 PM

Denver has had 5 home games...and that thin air is probably the biggest advantage in the NFL. How the **** does that happen...KC had 2 out of the first 6

There is no dominant team in the NFL this season....anyone can beat anyone. Manning in crappy weather on the road...we'll see

I'd really like to do the same. Every time some asshole gets suspended I feel like a perfect putz for not trying harder to give it up this year. If the Browns ever accidentally win the damn thing I'll be able to give it up forever.

tk13 10-27-2014 11:08 PM

Strength of schedule is the winning percentage of all the teams you play. Strength of victory is the winning percentage of the teams you've defeated.

It usually doesn't come into play that often really. But when you're talking about wild card tiebreakers SOV is actually the 4th tiebreaker, ahead of strength of schedule. It's usually head-to-head, conference record, common games, strength of victory, strength of schedule.

srvy 10-27-2014 11:13 PM

****in Donks are just toying with teams now. Fox sports clowns had Dallas before tonight. Jerry must really throw a good party for the media after the season. Those guys cant get the cowboys cock outta there mouths.

Ah. Rep.

tk13 10-27-2014 11:25 PM

The real point though wasn't playoff tiebreakers... usually the complaint is the Chiefs beat up on weaker teams and never play well against good teams, which has probably been true more years than not. This was a frequent comment in 2010 and 2013. This year though they're much more competitive and have beaten some good teams.

007 10-27-2014 11:39 PM

I voted New England just because it stunk less than saying Dunver.

that was an easy counter.

They have the #3 offense in the NFL and you want to talk shit on the OC.

Great logic.

mcaj22 10-27-2014 11:47 PM

because they play garbage defenses.

and laid eggs against real defenses. Their stats are inflated to the 10th degree from like 4 games.

cosmo20002 10-27-2014 11:49 PM

There is no "best" team in the NFL. They are all acting troupes and "players" cast in certain roles to play a part in the story that is called the 2014 season.

It's fixed, it what I'm saying.

Hammock Parties 10-27-2014 11:50 PM

Colts, Browns and Texans have decent defenses. Try again.

The difference is the Steelers have an elite RB to go with their franchise QB.

We're ****ed that week.

And the 49ers.

Don't forget the 49ers.

All four teams were supposed to have their way with us.

We went 2-2, and were within one possession in the losses.

Big Ben is on pace for almost 5000 yards and 32 TD.

That team is a force to be reckoned with.

Brady and Manning will fade in December and that Steelers team will be hitting their stride.

Well he did say elite offense, but that is another team I'm sure he picked to beat us a billion to zero.

The dreaded GoChiefs seal of approval.

You've all but doomed the Steelers to a wildly disappointing finish.

Nothing would make you happier eh? I see you've found a new pair of nuts to cling too, after the great geno smith crashed and burned. you're attached to big bens scrotum so tight right now it'd probably castrate him, if someone smacked you. They are a tough team no doubt, but unless, they magically become the best defense in the NFL, and can stop Charles and knile, they probably aren't going to crush us. I'm not sure why youre rambling on about the Steelers offense being the 3rd ranked offense in the NFL on this site... instead, why not talk about the chiefs having the 3rd ranked defense, or the 3rd ranked rushing attack, second really since qb scrambles dont count right? Or does that not apply to russel Wilson? I really do not understand you.

The Steelers barely beat a bad texans team, lost to an average browns team, and lost to the buccs. They are nothing special.

I was going to just say ditto except I never did like him and IMO he's always been an idiot. The rest is spot on.
If either one of my sons had every displayed the kind of dipshittery he does on a daily basis they would have been stuffed in a gunny sack with a couple bricks and tossed in the river. Then I would have cut my own nutsack off with a dull butter knife so as to never produce such a waist of oxygen ever again.

FRCDFED 10-28-2014 08:24 AM

The Bronco's are definitely playing lights out right now but I can't help but wonder what the overall perception of the Chiefs would be right now had we not laid the egg in game 1 against the Titans. Had we been sitting at 5-2 with some wins against strong teams or had AR not screwed up his play calling in the two losses then I think the perception around here would be very optimistic on our chances. Denver has to go on the road eventually and play in some weather. We all know that is his achilles heal.

stumppy 10-28-2014 08:26 AM

Enh. Now, Denver has had an interesting lack of road travel, but their lone loss was a scrappy OT loss at SEA earlier in the season. They'll make up for the road games over the next month and a half, with most of their games on the road.

As they close out the season, Denver is:

@KC on 11/30
Bills in Denver 12/7
@ SD
@ Cin on 12/22
Raiders on 12/28

@ Cincy, last year (on that date) it was 52 degrees I think.

Cold weather in Denver, no big deal.
