How I see the offseason (with cap implications)

Chiefs Free Agents - Must Re-Sign

OLB Justin Houston - Give Houston a deal around $14 million per to be the highest paid OLB in the NFL
OC Rodney Hudson - Give Hudson a deal around $3.5 million per, putting him in the top 10 for Centers in the NFL.
DE Allen Bailey - Give Bailey a deal around $1.5 million per putting him around 20th in terms of starting 3-4 defensive ends in the NFL.
DE Kevin Vickerson - Give Vickerson a deal around $1.5 million per, putting him around 20th in terms of starting 3-4 defensive ends in the NFL.
CB Chris Owens - Give Owens a deal at $870,000, putting him at the vet minimum for 7th year players in the NFL.
CB Ron Parker - Give Parker a deal at around $1.50 million per, putting him at the top of the tier 3 CBs in the NFL (65th) and in the middle of the tier 2 safeties (48th) or so.
ILB Josh Mauga - Give Mauga a deal around $940,000, putting him at the bottom of starting NFL linebackers (around 48th) but above vet min (870,000 for him).
LS Thomas Gafford - Sign Gafford at the vet minimum of $870,000 for his tenure.
RT Ryan Harris - Harris has earned a re-signing so far, give him a deal worth $1.2 per or so, putting him at the bottom of starting RTs in the NFL.
S Kelcie McCray - Sign McCray at vet minimum of $660,000
OLB Josh Martin - Sign Martin at vet minimum of $660,000
TE Demetrius Harris - Sign Harris at vet minimum of $660,000

Total of these signings = $27,860,000
Cap Hits = $158,928,172 (18,928,172 over)

Chiefs Restructuring

OLB Tamba Hali - Offer Hali to take his 2015 salary, roster bonus, and workout bonuses, totaling $9 million and make them a signing bonus on a 3 year extension (2015-16-17). Give Hali the vet minimum salary of 970,000 in 2015. His prorated old signing bonus money of just over 2.9 million will have to be added to his new signing bonus and prorated over the 3 years, giving him a new bonus hit of $3,988,235 per and a cap hit of $4,958,235 in 2015, which remains on par with the top 15 3-4 OLBs in the NFL while saving the Chiefs $6.5 million against the cap.

Cap Hits = $152,421,701 (12,421,701 over)

Chiefs Cuts

QB Chase Daniel - Cap Savings of $3.8 million
RB Cyrus Gray - Cap Savings of $668,500
WR A.J. Jenkins - Cap Savings of $1,337,390
WR Donnie Avery - Cap Savings of $3,550,000
DE Mike DeVito - Cap Savings of $4,000,000 (give injury settlement)
TE Sean McGrath - Cap Savings of $585,000 (currently showing against cap but retirement voids base)
TE Anthony Fasano - Cap Savings of $1,975,000
ILB Derrick Johnson - Cap Savings of $5,250,000 (give injury settlement)

Total Savings = $21,165,890 (Dead Money Created = $5,176,918)
Cap Hits = $131,255,811 ($8,744,189 under = enough to sign draft class)

Cap Rollover from 2014 = $5,417,020
FB Anthony Sherman was extended, approximately $2,333,333 in 2015 reduces effective cap rollover to $3,083,687. Could be used on a couple low-level free agents.

Let Walk...

OG Mike McGlynn
OG Jeff Linkenbach
S Kurt Coleman
WR Junior Hemmingway
WR Frankie Hammond
S Daniel Sorenson
LB Dezman Moses
RB Joe McKnight

Obviously cap accuracy could be slightly off, but it should be very close. There will be turnover of some low-level contracts I'm sure, and some signings of new ones.

How I'd see the roster going into FA/Draft

And the losses, summarized...

QB Chase Daniel

WR Donnie Avery
WR Junior Hemingway
WR Frankie Hammond

TE Anthony Fasano

OG Mike McGlynn
OG Jeff Linkenbach

DE Mike DeVito

ILB Derrick Johnson

OLB Dezman Moses

What this leaves KC...

46 active players. They need only 7 of their 11 draft picks to make the active roster.

What they appear to need...

WR - 3
TE - 1
OG - 1
OT - 1
ILB - 1

Everything else is shuffling...

Add in I'd target Jacksonville WR Cecil Shorts with that limited cap space. Can probably be had in the 2 million per range one would hope.

OldSchool 11-09-2014 09:53 PM

Shorts has never been healthy for a full season. He always misses some games.

Cutting Daniel while expecting Murray and Bray to be capable backups is ridiculous speculation. Cutting Derrick Johnson, especially before he's completed rehab, is another dumb move.

Hali's restructure? $9 million over three years? No way he'll accept that. Why hasn't Eric Berry been traded? Is his $8.1 million dollar salary really necessary?

Why are you cutting a dirt cheap developmental safety in Sorenson? Aren't the Chiefs allowed to develop players?

Why wouldn't you attempt to sign Joe McKnight after his amazing performance in Miami? Are you saying there isn't room on the roster a youngish play maker like him?

The Chiefs desperately need to upgrade their backup OLB's. Zombo's an aging special teams players and Martin has never done a thing, yet you keep him over McKnight?

I'd like to see them really invest in good offer a I've lineman. It's not flashy, but with all our picks, really solidify the trenches.

Obviously we need more explosiveness outside on offense too though

1. Chase Daniel is scheduled to make 4.8 million next year as a backup. Read that again. He's gone, the Chiefs need that cap space. Never understood the love affair people have with an overpaid, mediocre, backup QB that likely wont' see the field and certainly is unlikely to save the Chiefs if Alex goes down. What I've seen of Murray, I'm okay with him as the #2 heading into his 2nd year.

2. Cutting Johnson is a move that is made in lieu of cutting either Eric Berry, Tamba Hali, Sean Smith, Jamaal Charles, or Dwayne Bowe OR letting Justin Houston walk. The Chiefs need the cap space if they are intent on re-signing Houston and they have proved to be okay without Johnson and he's one of the oldest on that list. Add in the fact that players are never 100% back to usual until two years removed from an Achilles, and it makes the choice even easier.

3. Hali is looking straight down the pipe of restructure or get cut. If he chooses to get cut, he gets whatever he can on the open market. It isn't likely other teams still see Hali in the top 15 OLBs in the NFL, so he'll be hard pressed to get a contract anywhere near 5 million per season elsewhere. In this case, he still makes as much money as he otherwise would in 2015, only difference is he gets it as a signing bonus. If you think he won't accept that, I'd say you're very, very wrong. Hali isn't what he used to be, but Dee Ford looks light years from being ready, which is the only reason I chose restructure instead of cut.

4. I very seriously thought about trading or cutting Eric Berry, but I'm not certain that is the best idea. The Chiefs did get by without him, but Abdullah isn't getting younger. Berry is an asset, and the going rate for top safeties like Berry is right at what he's set to make in 2015. If anything, its his salary THIS season that is far beyond what he deserves. I'm not opposed to the options of trade/cut when it comes to Berry, but I don't think its the smartest move.

5. Joe McKnight... one performance does not make a player. If he can be had at the vet minimum, then I'm not opposed to bringing him back in. I'm more inclined to see if West can make the active roster next year and bring in some low dollar competition.

6. I'm not worried about Zombo. As far as Martin goes, he's shown some flashes. I do agree that the Chiefs could use more competition, but that doesn't mean I'm going to throw Martin away for one good game from a journeyman running back that is a dime a dozen.

Chase Daniel is a non-luxury that we can not afford next season. I'd rather give Murray a chance to be the guy. Is it risky? Kinda, but Alex is pretty dependable and frankly if he goes down I'd rather see a guy who could be the future, than a stop gap get the snaps.

DaneMcCloud 11-10-2014 12:30 AM

The salary cap will increase at least $10 million next year, in addition to restructures and cuts.

Stop with the nonsense.

Direckshun 11-10-2014 04:21 AM

This is super entertaining, thanks for doing it.

I don't like them re-signing Harris too much. I want Stephenson to get a year in. I can understand why you did, however.

Also, I think the Chiefs should make a run at TE Lance Kendricks.

jonzie04 11-10-2014 04:38 AM

I like it except cutting dj. Also don't think were going to get bailey for 1.5m

spanky 52 11-10-2014 08:20 AM

Bailey, Hudson, Mauga and Parker are not going to settle for the monies you've listed. If they keep Houston, Hali is gone. Have no problem cutting Daniel. As much as I like DJ, with that injury and his age, he's gone. DeVito's money goes to Bailey.

mszymko 11-10-2014 11:39 AM

Would really like to see us keep both Houston and Hali. Lately I'm wondering if we don't trade Berry, maybe to move up in the draft? Cecil Shorts? Meh, ok. But if we go that route I'd like to see us get a Star receiver in the first round of the draft. Maybe that means we pkg picks and possibly Berry to climb up into the top of the draft.

Bowe, Stud rookie WR, Cecil Shorts... theoretically looks like a respectable NFL WR Core.

Anyways... thank you for your analysis, good read!

I can't remember the last time the Chiefs had this many contract year players performing so well.

This is a refreshing problem to have.

Stop with the nonsense.

It increases 7 million from everything I've seen, from 133 million to 140 millon. This is accounted for in my analysis.

I think you might be grossly overestimating NFL contracts and values by position, especially in relation to the caliber these players are at. I could be wrong, but I can't seem to relate to your statement on "settling for the monies listed."

I put Hudson in the top 10 centers in the NFL in terms of salary. He'd be on par with Scott Wells, which is fairly accurate compared to skill. The max I'd pay Hudson is 4.5 million or I'd let him walk, honestly. That would put him on par with Nick Hardwick, and I think Hardwick is better. He's solid, but he isn't on the level of a Jason Kelce, which brings you to the next tier.

Bailey and Vickerson would both be at about 20th for NFL DEs, and neither have proved more than a single season of value at the position, which means other teams won't pay them in the top half either. They would be on par with Brett Kiesel and Cameron Heyward of Pittsburgh, which is fairly relative to their skill sets at this point. I might would pay a bit more to get Bailey back and let Vickerson go if push came to shove, but I'm not sure either player has proven to be worth more yet.

Mauga could be a guy that maybe costs a bit more, but he isn't a great starter. Akeem Jordan signed with the Skins for 920,000 this year, and I don't see Mauga as any sort of upgrade, do you? Both are solid, what you see is what you get, linebackers that you just don't throw the Brinks truck at.

Parker has never been a starter in any capacity before this year, and the salary I listed is in the range of starting 2nd safeties and 3rd CBs, which is basically what he is.

I don't think any of these guys are going to command enormous contracts, and those that think they should will probably walk.

First you guys are welcome, I thought something new would be fun. I like to debate things like this too.

I'm looking at the Chiefs going WR in round 1 and add 1 or two more.

My current mock is:
1. WR DeVante Parker - Louisville (6'3" 211)
2. CB Alex Carter - Stanford (6'0" 200)
3. LB Jake Ryan - Michigan (6'3" 235)
3. OT Sean Hickey - Syracuse (6'5" 300)
4. OG Jarvis Harrison - Texas A&M (6'3" 325)
5. FS Adrian Amos - Penn State (6'0" 209)
5. WR Rannell Hall - Central Florida (6'1" 200)
5. DE Anthony Chickillo - Miami (6'4" 277)
6. WR Tre McBride - William & Mary (6'1" 205)
7. RB Travon Van - Montana (5'10" 195)
7. TE Nick Boyle - Delaware (6'5" 270)

Which makes me think the following:

Strikethroughs = Cuts

It was just one game last week where I observed UM's LB Ryan closely... so it's probably not fair to shut him down.. but I was really unimpressed. He seems slow and lacking in acceleration. Someone to look for late in the draft, would be my early thought.

Like the effort and thought that you put into the OP. :thumb:

Crow, it'll be a miracle if Parker makes it out of the top 15 much less into the mid 20s. That kid has top 10 ability right now and would probably be in top 5 consideration if he had been healthy all year. His monster game vs FSU does not help our chances at all.

Could be. A couple of really good receivers at the top. One will fall past 10 I'm sure, and if you have 11 draft picks and a team that is close to doing some damage, then I see no reason not to move up and get a guy like Parker. You have Cooper, White, Strong, Funchess, maybe Green-Beckham that could all go early. Even though I feel Green-Beckham will drop, there is a chance he goes top 20. Even Randy Moss, for all his troubles early in life, got drafted at #21. Now if the Chiefs make the playoffs and manage to go deep into them, then I might start looking at other options. If any one of Cooper, White, Strong, or Parker drop then I'm all over that. I'd move up a bit for any one of them, especially Cooper and Parker. I like Diggs late round 1.

I'm 100% down with all of this, you've obviously put a ton of thought into it and it all makes perfect sense to me.

You made hard choices while still providing avenues that might be able to keep guys like Berry and Hali... we sure cant keep everyone, nor would we want to... but you have come up with a nice formula to keep what matters most.

RunKC 11-13-2014 11:54 AM

Couple things I don't agree with.

-Catapano will be back. He was quietly developing into a nice rotational player. I expect him to be rocked up again like he was before he got Ebola.
-why are we cutting Joe McKnight? His base is 645k and he's a proven weapon (see Miami game). I thought about him this weekend when JC hurt his shoulder. He's a very good option at RB behind Knile Davis and he's cheap. Keep him.
-Chris Owens sucks. I don't want him back. Sure he's good at blitzing, but his coverage skills aren't great at all. I don't want anymore 5'9" midgets in this damn secondary and I don't think Dorsey will either moving forward.

Last thing. I LOVE Alex Carter. Sadly he won't be there round 2. This is a first rd player but we should be able to draft him. I think he'll be there.

O.city 11-13-2014 12:02 PM

Owens is pretty.good in the slot though, this last week hopefully being an anomaly.

I dunno why Catapano is anything other than fodder at this point.

Bc he made a decent impact as a rookie. People said this shit about Kelce last year and look where he's at now?

So did Cooper. Where is he now?

Kelce was considered amongst the best of the tight ends available in the 2013 draft. Pete Prisco of CBS Sports said he was the best TE last year and in the 2014 draft. But because of character concerns, he, like Justin Houston, dropped two rounds.

Catapano is a nice developmental 7th round acquisition but there are no guarantees moving forward that he'll be a solid, rotational player the Chiefs can depend on for the next few years.

Meh, Owens wouldn't see the field if Fleming wasn't injured.

I still can't figure out why Cooper has seen little to no action this season. I know his play fell off late last season but there has to be more to his situation.

Yes, but you can't just give up on these guys after on year. Cooper is having a sophomore slump, but can get better like before.
And I think Cat will be back to compete. And if so I think he makes the team.

I'm not "giving up" on Catapano. I'm stating that it would be folly to count on a guy that had three tackles as a rookie, then missed training camp and was placed on IR the following season.

I wouldn't cut him before the end of training camp but I'd hardly rely on him as rotational player until it's proven that he can be a rotational player.

How so? Fleming was on the outside with Owens in the alot before he was injured.

It also says alot about cooper in that they moved parker to cb before bringing cooper in. Seems his confidence is shot

Owens is "supposed" to be the 4th or 5th cb and IMO, Fleming has played better than Owens.

That said, it just all depends on matchups but I'd rather see Fleming than Owens. But the defense can have multiple looks now that Berry's healthy and Parker has proven to be an outstanding cornerback and safety.

RunKC 11-13-2014 01:38 PM

Right now I would love to draft Alex Carter CB Stanford rd 1. He's got the speed, experience strength and length to be a #1 CB. Dude is 200 lbs of muscle too.

Would really solidify the CB position.

I don't know if Fleming could play the Nickel cb role in the alot. I'd rather see Gaines do it myself but I the k I remember seeing he's hurt

Gaines has been opposite Smith.

If everyone is healthy by playoff time, the Chiefs secondary will be very, very good with Smith, Gaines, Fleming, Cooper, Owens, Parker, Berry and Coleman.

O.city 11-13-2014 03:32 PM

I think Gaines quickness would be utilized well by playing the nickel, but he's probably to inexperienced.

There's no way that we dump all of those WRs and then insert 2-3 rookies into the situation. Reid won't throw that many rookies into the rotation when they don't know the offense.

May not have a choice.

I'm starting to think the Chiefs keep Bowe AND Avery and start to play DAT at WR a ton more, running actual, you know, routes.

Still think it's possible they land a 1st round WR, however.

kccrow 11-13-2014 07:19 PM

Run, I"m not cutting McKnight, I'm choosing not to re-sign him. He's a low salary guy, and I'm going to be wrong on a few of those I'm sure.

As for Catapano... if KC drafts a youngster and re-signs the guys I have outlined, he's going to have a tough go making the team. It may be a position they don't draft if they can re-sign both Bailey and Vickerson. I'm hung up on that. I want to see some youth development there instead of a constant rotation of low-level free agents.

As for the draft slotting, that has a ways to go. I'm currently seeing Carter slotted in the 2nd. That may change. He also needs to declare for any of it to matter, but I bet he will.

I'm very concerned about the CB position. It isn't like it is settled. Sean Smith continues to get more expensive, and until this year he has severely underperformed. He's having a solid year though. Dorsey, so far, appears to draft to replace guys who's caps are getting too big (Fisher for Albert, Ford for Hali). This year my money is on WR for Bowe or CB for Smith, or both. I strongly believe those are the positions with the highest probability of being drafted in the 1st two rounds.

I could live with Carter/Diggs, or something like that too. I'm not boxing myself into a select few players yet, that's a long ways off.

chiefzilla1501 11-13-2014 07:33 PM

Cutting way too many guys. Paying Donnie Avery a few million isn't a bad thing. I wouldn't cut Fasano just to save $2M. And guys like McGlynn... he's still valuable roster depth. DJ? He's still a surprisingly good value even at his age.

The Chiefs don't have to take haircuts to keep their team intact. And knowing Dorsey/Reid, I don't think they'll be shy about paying good money to keep players in KC.

If you worry about your short-term cap, you just slot a few contracts where the cap hit doesn't hit you big until 2016.

kccrow 11-13-2014 08:38 PM

The Chiefs have 20 free agents... I don't get the "you have too many cuts" part. I cut 8 in order to re-sign 12, leaving a net loss of 16 players, many are low-end contracts and 9 of "those 16" are currently taking roster spots because of players on IR. I say "those 16" because I actually chose to keep some guys replacing those on IR and cut some guys on IR. This leaves a net loss of 7 players. The Chiefs should have 11 draft picks, and a cap situation that allows them to sign some low-end free agents. Why are there "too many cuts?" Or, is it that you just don't agree with the players cut?

Many here have an attachment to Derrick Johnson. He is a very solid ILB, no doubt about it. However, he will not likely be the same player he was due to the Achilles going into the final year of a contract in which there is no guaranteed money and would save the Chiefs better than a 1/3 the money it will take to retain Justin Houston. He's a cut that might have to happen. Same goes for DeVito. You could, of course choose to cut Hali to save Johnson and DeVito. You could cut Hali and save either Johnson or DeVito and then also save Fasano and Avery. There are options, but this forces you to play a guy in Dee Ford that looks nowhere close to ready, you lose a very solid rush linebacker in Hali that is a leader and an A+ effort player, and you are retaining 1 or 2 guys that may not ever be able to play the game at the level they did before. It really doesn't make all that much sense to me. Football is a business first. I think the goal is to reduce unknowns while retaining your best football players. I think Bailey, Vickerson, Mauga, and JMJ have shown that KC could move on without DeVito and DJ and allows the team to retain certain other key players, like Hali and Berry and re-sign others like Houston and Hudson.

RunKC 11-13-2014 09:18 PM

The Chiefs learned that losing pro bowl ILB's and Safeties are nowhere near as bad as losing pro bowl pass rushers.

O.city 11-13-2014 09:22 PM

Defense has played extremely well fundamental wise. Didn't do that last year.

Cutting guys because you have strong depth from starter to backup at that position, okay. Cutting Fasano and Avery without a replacement doesn't make sense. Cutting a value contract guy like DJ isn't the best move either. You don't have to cut guys to free up money for these guys. Cutting guys like McGlynn and McKnight... there's no need to do those things when they cost nothing to keep, and they're valuable bench depth.

The cap is going to go up next year and the Chiefs have a really clean cap in 2016. If you re-sign your guys in 2015, you can put the majority of the money into the signing bonus and wait for 2016 for their cap hit to really kick in. Cut players because they no longer fit what you want to do. The Chiefs next year aren't in a bad cap situation and don't have to make pressure cuts.

They also have to make room fort he 11 draft picks next year potentially.

Guys at the bottom of the roster are likely to get pushed down and bumped

O.city 11-13-2014 09:26 PM

And I'd look to move on from DJ because of the combination of injury, age, and salary

zilla... McGlynn and McKnight are free agents at the end of the year. They'd also have to be re-signed. Neither are good enough to warrant it in my opinion. Maybe bringing McKnight back to camp, but McGlynn sucks ass.

The Chiefs are notin a good cap position to re-sign free agents. They don't have much space after the increase is taken into account. It does go up, reportedly to 140 million, which I outlined in the original post. As it sits they have less than 5 million in space without re-signing anyone.

This is silly. The Chiefs will either restructure the contracts of Hali, Berry and Johnson or they'll save $23 million by cutting them.

It's highly unlikely that DeVito and Fasano return, which will save nearly $8 million. Daniel and Bowe will be asked to restructure, I doubt Avery's around and it's not inconceivable to see Sean Smith extended and his cap hit lowered.

Dorsey will create plenty of cap space.

O.city 11-14-2014 08:07 AM

The reported number right now is 10 mil that they're under.

With rolling that over and being smart in terms of structuring deals, the cap isn't an issue

RunKC 11-14-2014 08:59 AM

Here was my analysis in another thread with #'s from potential cuts.

DeVito-$4 million can draft a decent run stuffer
Avery-$3.55 million not worth it
Daniel-$3.8 million not worth it
Fasano-$1.975 million we can draft a run blocking TE to replace him
Mays-$3 million not missing him THAT much for his price tag. Can draft a guy
J. Allen-$1.23 million we won't miss him and don't now
Jenkins-$1.33 million not worth it
V. Walker-$1.75 Bailey took his job and Cat will be back. Not worth 10 snaps per game avg

That's $20.63 million saved.

O city is correct. Nick Jacobs reported that the Chiefs had $11.33 on the cap on September 5th according the NFLPA. We had to sign a couple cheap guys like Jamell Flemming, so it probably puts us down around $10 million.

That's not even counting potential restructures.

10-currently in cap
10-added cap inflation
15- rough guesstimate of saving from cuts

We'll have over $30 million. Probably somewhere around 30-35. And at least 13 of that is going to Houston.

kccrow 11-14-2014 05:08 PM

The 10 million is with this year's rollover after the cap inflates 7 million. I don't get some of you guys and mathematics. Jesus H. Christ.

O.city 11-14-2014 05:17 PM

Pretty sure you can continue to roll unused money over.

In any manner, with the way contracts can be done, the cap should never really be an issue

kccrow 11-14-2014 05:33 PM

Cap Math Lesson: Exhibit A
Next year's cap: $140,000,000
Next year's cap hits ALREADY on the books: $135,734,675 (Active Spending: 130,408,172 + Dead Money: 5,326,503)
Cap space in 2015: $4,265,325
Chiefs cap space available for rollover from 2014: $4,853,020
Total potential cap space BEFORE any moves are made: $9,118,345
The Chiefs have 20 Free Agents.
One of those free agents JUSTIN HOUSTON, whose contract (if re-signed) is likely to cost $14,000,000 or so AGAINST THE CAP in 2015.
$14 million is greater than $9.1 million.

kccrow 11-15-2014 08:48 PM

Given recent news of the size of the extension Bailey received, this is going to put a significant crinkle in what I've outlined here. Minimum cap hit he'll be is near 3.5 million in 2015.

Chiefs may just have to let Hali go outright at this point, else find a way to gain money from other sources (Bowe, Berry, etc)

Dave Lane 11-15-2014 09:06 PM

There's a lot of people that don't do the maths in this here thread.

I think a ton of this is being awfully generous.

The Chiefs aren't going to be doing this much turnover for three consecutive seasons. They're going to keep half the people you have them cutting. My guess is the cap space we'll have to dance will with be about $20m, with nearly 100% of it going to Houston (most likely the tag), Hudson, Parker, and the rookies.

The Chiefs will re-sign some of the dirt cheap guys like Mauga, I expect, and bring in a couple more street free agents that cost pennies on the dollar.

We're not going to be big swinging dicks this year.
