If Nick Lowery could have kicked under pressure, instead of missing a field goal in regulation and overtime, the Chiefs would have been in the 1989 playoffs.

And maybe Chiefs history would have been forever changed...

Why did you have to post this up. JFC I was already depressed.

Sorry, I meant that for the playoffs post.

The oddest thing about the 1989 season?

The Chiefs played the Dolphins twice. Twice.

And they only faced two NFC teams, both of which they beat.

Amazing how much the scheduling has changed.

Kman34 12-24-2014 08:38 AM

How good would DeBerg Look on this team???? His play fakes were legendary..

MahiMike 12-24-2014 09:36 AM

I was at that game! With a Dolphin buddy. It was so damn cold. I showed up in a jeans jacket and it was like 40 degrees. No one was buying beer and Joe Robbie raised the price of coffee to $6/cup.

It actually snowed in Jacksonville and they had the highway closed for miles. That's the 1st and last time I remember snow in Jacksonville.

Oh, and we won and knocked the Dolphins out. My friend was pissed.

On this day in 1989 I was leaving the hospital for the first time in my life at 6 weeks old.

Well the Chiefs celebrated your homecoming with a win. As a real old guy,;I was deployed in Panama and got the comm guys to find/ print the score. I then enjoyed showing the Fish fans. Pre-interweb and sat comm was very limited then. As a kid, I was at the last Municipal Stadium game: Christmas Day 1971 vs the Fish: another bad day in Chiefs playoff history. I do have an all team autographed AFL football from the "1970 world champions" as one of the players wrote on the ball. I sure thought there would be more and that your generation had at least one by now........

Deberg_1990 12-24-2014 11:14 AM

Okoye must have had the biggest should pads in NFL history.

DeBerg...LOL, what a dum-dum for chucking that up there. His RB released and was WIDE OPEN in the flat.

chiefqueen 12-24-2014 12:24 PM

Billy Martin would get drunk and kill himself when he flipped his car in his front yard the next day. (NBC News actually scrolled that while airing the Sound of Music.)

Also, on that Christmas Day, Romanian Citizens revolted (eastern European governments were all falling at that time) finding the country's leader and his wife and killing them both. Pictures of both of them lying dead were on all the newscasts.

Like this year, the Chiefs needed 3 or 4 things to happen for them to make the playoffs. All of them did except Tampa Bay beating Pittsburgh.

Those are my memories of Christmas Eve\Day 1989.

Rain Man 12-24-2014 01:02 PM

Ah, December of 1989. 1989 was a rough year for me on a number of fronts, probably one of the two toughest years of my life. Toward the end of the year I practiced the time-honored art of fleeing my problems and went to India. I wandered around India and Nepal for a few weeks, saw some amazing things, and tried to find newspapers to give me the results of the Chiefs games and Christian Okoye's running exploits. I got back sometime in mid-December and saw him lead the league in rushing, and I had a good feeling about that rookie linebacker. The Chiefs finished above .500, which was not common in those days, and life started looking up again.

So he could chuck it over 10 yards?

He could have thrown an interception what an idiot.

He was great. As long as you didn't want to win anything. IOW, he sucked balls.

"He plays just well enough to get you beat"

- Bill Walsh on Steve Deberg

"Bob" Dobbs 12-24-2014 03:07 PM

How in the **** did this turn into a DeBerg thread??

If John Alt/David Szott hadn't held on that 3rd Down run Lowry would have made the field goal . If memory serves me.correctly that GW FG was about a nut hair shy of hitting the crossbar. 10 yards would have made all the difference in the world.

You're confusing the 1990 playoff game against Miami with the 10-10 tie at Cleveland in 1989.

Had Nick the Dick not missed two easy field goals, the Chiefs would have made the playoffs in 1989.

Gadzooks 12-25-2014 12:23 AM

Joe Namath should come back as a color guy. He was so great I wanted to kiss him.

With the holding call, it was a 42 yard field goal. Lowery missed it.

If Santos missed a 42 yard, FTW kick, that would advance the Chiefs in the playoffs, he'd be run out of town in a rail.

Yet Lowery, for whatever reason, got a pass. To this day, I don't understand why.

I was thinking there was one on the final drive as well, but it's been 24 years so I could definitely be wrong.

It was 52 yards with the hold, 42 without.

yep - and as I recall (and my memory may be a bit fuzzy), the holding call was super-questionable.

But - not much has changed - we still need a win, and a ton of things to happen to sneak into the playoffs.

Although, I think the 90 team could have done some damage in the playoffs, as opposed to this year's team.

So where in KC was the old Municipal stadium?
