Best BBQ joint in KC area?
We are driving down to KC and I usually go to Gates, but want to try something different this time around.
I'm looking to go to the absolute best BBQ joint in the KC area for dinner tonight and figured you guys would know best. Maybe a few of you want to come out and eat with us. What say you, CP? (The search function is off or I'd use it.) |
i'd meet you at Oklahoma joes'. but i'm 3 hours away, and going in the opposite direction.
love the z-man!!!! |
We're doing this again?

You should go to Oklahoma Joes and get carryout sandwiches or meat then swing by jack stack and grab some hickory pit beans and cheesy corn. Once you acquire the items take them to your location and pair it with gates extra hot sauce.
you should probably grab the sides first via carry out in martin city then swing by Joes KC up on Roe. Joes sides suck for the most part. The onion rings are good and the fries are okay but the other is just meh Jack Stack has great sides but the meat is somewhat lacking to me personally  a bit bland |

Famous Daves > KC BBQ
Any place that boils ribs has my vote. Listen to me. |
I like LC's, but if you're going for what's considered best in the city, you better go to Oklahoma Joes, or Arthur Bryants.
|
HyVee has some nice baked ribs.

Give Q39 a shot. It's new, and really ****ing legit. The owner has a shit ton of awards.
I probably won't go anywhere else for the forseeable future. It's also in a great part of town. |

I'll tell you where NOT to go - Dickey's BBQ. It's hard to **** up BBQ, but they find a way.

If you want to sit down and be served go to Jack Stack. If you want carry out/cafeteria style go to Oklahoma Joes (aka Joes KC). Being served or cafeteria style should be your only determining factor because both are excellent.
|
Q39 is where the locals eat.
|
Buy into the hype and A'sphere of that Jack Stack.
I will say this much - Gates has that character appeal. I saw a large black lady sit down and literally break her wooden chair in the Gate's dinning-room, this was pre-game vs Bengals - Dick V's last game - It was hilarious. |
The beans at Q39 are as good as I have had anywhere. Not sure about their other sides.
I had their mixed plate with brisket, pulled pork and smoked chicken. All tremendous. The sauce is also great. I liked it better than Gates, personally. Not so watery. I will go back and get their burnt ends. My only complaint is you can't get a plate with burnt ends and pulled pork. If I had my way that's all I'd eat. It's a sit-down and serve place so **** Jack Stack's forever, IMO. |
Gates will be my favorite probably forever.
|
One thing I like at gates is their smoked ham. Can't get it anywhere else.

I went to Q39 the first Saturday of restaurant week and it was a 90 minute wait. I peaced out and came back for lunch 4 days later, but the place is very popular, and for a good reason.
|
Funny when I first joined - Zarda was mentioned quite a bit - they're not even on the list anymore - well done Mike Zarda you midget ****.
|
Is Q39 a new place?
|
It opened last April.

I'm trying to beat food sense into him. We went to breakfast and I let him pick. We ended up at goddamn Le Peep. The place is a rebranded IHOP. |

Wanted to hit this Wooden Spoon place up but Classic Cookie would have sufficed. |

If you aren't going to the normal holy grail that is Gates BBQ. Then Oklahoma Joes would be my choice or go to the hood at get Arthur Bryant's.

If you are with buddies and want a sit-down restaurant with a bar in it, it's great, too. And close to the other Westport bars. But mostly the BBQ here is amazing and the prices not too steep. I cut through that sliced brisket effortlessly with my fork. |

I've eaten four times at three different Gates locations. Arthur Bryants, LC's, and OK Joes are all superior.
Looking forward to trying Q39 on my next trip. |
Alright. It's official. Q39 the next time I set for in KC.

In recent years some of the the top Texas places easily top the usual KC joints which was not the case before. Wouldn't surprise me at all if the best in KC has had had a similar movement to the more boutique places that are even better. Long ass lines ****ing suck though.
