I have a job interview tomorrow - question regarding facial hair
Is it appropriate to keep facial hair for a job interview?
I keep my beard trimmed and clean - doesn't look like a scraggly mess. I'm young, but look like I'm about 12 years old clean shaven. Any input appreciated. |
Might help to know the occupation. Garbage man needs scraggly beard.
|
If you think looking young will have an adverse effect on getting the job, don't shave.
|
Have to know what the job is... But as a general rule of thumb it's better to be clean shaven.

I'd shave, then get a couple of neck tattoos. http://i.dailymail.co.uk/i/pix/2013/...83_634x362.jpg

Its not as big a deal as it used to be if its neat and trim, but if its a fairly conservative office, then when in doubt its best to shave and regrow it after you get the job.
|
Just make sure it's trimmed and not unkempt.
|
I think the key is to be well groomed. Beards aren't as much of a stigma as in the past as long as it is well kept. I went to my interview for a IT job I currently have with a beard. To my surprise one of the interviewers had a beard too. I suppose it would also help to know what you are interviewing for. Do you have any information for the type of environment they have at this place of employment?
|
Beards are fine these days if trimmed.
|
As long as it doesn't look like pube hair you should be good.

Do you know the company policy on facial hair?
|
I'd hire a guy with a beard just to fire him the next day for violating company policy on facial hair.
This ain't the ****ing major leagues or a bar in Dodge City circa 1842. Clean your shit up for christs sake. |
stop being lazy and just shave.
|
I always shave. Sucks.

I've always shaved ,then just grow it back out.
Anymore though, **** it. A nicely trimmed beard doesn't look bad. Just don't go in there looking like Weddle from the Chargers. |
Unless your applying for Santa Claus shave. Say what you will but you come for an interview look like you didn't just rise from bed late. Dont take the chance.

They also required all male employees to enter and exit the building wearing a suit and tie...even the janitors. |
When in doubt shave.

I'm dying over here after reading this post. I read it, picturing Dwight Shrute from The Office saying it. |

Any company that looks down on neatly trimmed facial hair isn't a company you probably want to work for.
|
I applied at Wolfgang Puck's in Disney a couple years ago and they told me I'd have to shave. You're only allowed a moustache there.
What kind of horseshit is that? I can't even grow a moustache anyway. |

Shave, if you don't have a lot of experience it will show on your resume and if that is the case, I would say they are looking for young talent.
|
Going to just shave it all off.
Thanks for the advice all. |

Before you remove that glorious neck-beard, go to the job site and see what the facial hair sitch is. |
I would rock the waddle from the Chargers beard.
If I can't have one to work for you then its not an establishment I see a need to be in. |
Unless you're going to be wearing a name tag and steel toe boots just shave FFS.
|
I haven't gone to an interview clean shaven in more than 15 years. At least had a goatee. That's 7 jobs (some of them concurrent). Never seemed to hold me back.
I always present who I am. I'm not going to change who I am. I don't want to set an expectation that I'm not willing to uphold. That means I'm going in with facial hair of some sort, and every interview in the past 10 years, I didn't wear a tie. I'll wear a nice shirt, slacks, a blazer if that's what they want. I don't do ties. |

**** that. If you're just going to regrow it, tell them who they're getting up front. Let your experience and personality get you the job. |

Dang, 7 jobs in 15 years? What do you say when they ask where you want to be in 5 years, 3 jobs down the line? |

Like I said some of those were at the same time. From 2000-06 I worked three jobs - newspaper, TV, and a church. From then on, all TV jobs. Moving locations, moving jobs, moving companies is part of the culture, so no one really bats an eye when you only stay somewhere for a couple years. As for my job, I'm in a great position and the company likes me. I'm kinda forging my own path, which is pretty cool. The last two jobs I've had were positions that were created for me. |

I should clarify that I've been with the same company since 2008, though I've had unrelated jobs in that company and moved departments and locations. |

Tell them you have to have some hair on your body to feel masculine but if it makes you feel better I shaved my balls.

Clean shaven is the way to go at all times. I applied for my first faculty position at age 30. I looked so young that at the first faculty meeting I was assumed to be the son of one of the other faculty members. I had to wear a tie into the classroom to avoid being mistaken for another student. Appearing younger than my age never slowed me down a bit.
|
If you are young, I would say go into like your talking to your dad with humility and respect, not like some alpha male that wants to take over the company.
|
Beards are cool these days.
Good luck tomorrow! |
Giving yourself a clean shaven appearance is usually the best bet. Depends on the job of course. Currently no one cares if I shave for what I am doing but I don't let it get out of hand.

This picture of Kirby Puckett inspired me to grow my facial hair in his style when I was 17.
http://d3trabu2dfbdfb.cloudfront.net...5_300x300.jpeg I shaved it off once for an interview in my early 20's and was ridiculed by my friends for a week. I looked like a 12 year old instead of a 12 year old's evil twin. I didn't get the job, grew it back and landed a sweet gig in the financial industry soon after. IMO - well groomed facial hair shows more of an effort in overall grooming than a straight shave. It cites a male's maturity, and thus, can invoke a sense of authority and responsibility. A full beard on a young guy is difficult to pull off since it might lead one to believe you're too lazy to shave, but, if it looks like you've put effort into it's appearance, you should keep it. Good luck! |
Clean shaven seems nice.

Outside of food prep and service, if you take such a hard-line stance against facial hair in the workplace, it just makes you look like an uptight, out of touch, weirdo. |

Studies have shown that people view men with beards as being more intelligent and confident than those without (also more aggressive and unattractive, but that's beside the point). |

At least half my employees have beards. It depends on the work environment and culture though. More corporate = less facial hair.
