Eggnog

Do you like it? If so, do you buy it or make it? Have you ever aged it?

I'm thinking about making this: http://altonbrown.com/eggnog-recipe/

Mennonite 11-29-2015 08:48 AM

I have never drank eggnog. I've always been a boiled custard man myself.

lewdog 11-29-2015 08:48 AM

No.

That recipe I posted has rum, cognac, and bourbon!

The wife makes an eggnog cheesecake that's unbelievable.

What is this boiled custard thing you speak of?

BigMeatballDave 11-29-2015 08:56 AM

It's okay. I can't remember the last time I actually drank any other than using a little in my coffee as a creamer this time of year. Thanks for reminding me. :)

Maybe it's a regional thing. It's always sold in stores around here right beside the nog every Christmas. Home made is better than store bought.

Basic ingredients: sugar, milk, vanilla, eggs.

Simply Red 11-29-2015 09:14 AM

Once per year is perfect with this stuff.

I do like it - Southern Comfort's is very good.

Simply Red 11-29-2015 09:21 AM

It's best super-chilled. Serve as cold as possible, really helps the overall eggnog experience. It's critical, really.

:) - it's good stuff - but I tire of it easily - as I'd mentioned - Once per year it's really good and refreshing. I like it w/ peppermint accent of some sort.

BigMeatballDave 11-29-2015 09:36 AM

I bet it would be good with a coffee liqueur.

KCUnited 11-29-2015 09:54 AM

Think of Tebow's first time as you bring that glass to your lips.

Sully 11-29-2015 09:55 AM

But Milk Nog? I'd punch babies in the face to get it. I love it.

Seconded. I do like the stuff, w/brandy or rum. Bourbon if you have some bourbon that doesn't suit you 'as is'. If you have a party, get some whipping cream and use your mixer to whip it up good, fold that into your home made or store bought egg nog after you've mixed your brandy/rum in, just before serving. Sprinkle w/freshly grated nutmeg and you'll become a legend in your own time. Legend wait for it dairy!

I have one question: Doesn't the dairy go bad? Not the eggs so much but milk and cream? Or does the alcohol preserve it or just hide the rotted milk?

I screened saved that Brown recipe though for my archives.

Bacteria can't survive if it's alcoholic enough. So no, it won't go bad. The alcohol preserves it.

Ming the Merciless 11-29-2015 05:23 PM

I like to drink a lil nog this time of the year.

Ive never made it though.

Curious to see how others do theirs....

I like brandy & nog over ice

thats a pretty fair recipe. about the only difference was whip the whites with our hands on the bowl and mix them in the constantly stirred custard mix.

It's much better with Myers' Dark Rum :D

Miles 11-29-2015 09:48 PM

Dave Attel put it best:

“Eggnog, who thought that one up? I wanna get a little drunk, but I also want some pancakes. You know what eggnog really is. You're not gonna want to hear it, but I'll tell ya. It's elf cum. You might as well pour it down your back and slap your self on the ass.”

frozenchief 11-29-2015 10:17 PM

I age my egg nog. I make some around Xmas. I use milk cream and eggs from our chickens. Throw in vanilla beans and lots of bourbon (I usually use Wild Turkey 101 or Bulleit) and a bit of rum, usually Mt. Gay or Meyers. Age at least 30 days.

Alcohol kills any germs. Where I live, my garage is cold enough to keep, egg nog at the right temperature. Great part of the holidays. One piece of advice: do not use raw milk, I like the taste of raw milk and drink it when I can but don't use it for egg nog.

Anyone see or try that egg nog ice cream? Just saw it at Publix. I'll try it closer to Christmas on a self-indulgence day.

Eggnog

Two-week taste test of the aged eggnog: It's definitely developed and matured. Much mellower on booze since Day 1. Very interested to see how it develops. I think I'll keep one jar to try this time next year.

BucEyedPea 12-13-2015 03:01 PM

I bought some of that eggnog icecream at Publix two weeks ago and have already gained 3 lbs. No more egg nog anything for me.

Yeah, I'll buy a carton of it, and drink straight from the carton. A sip here, a sip there. You will literally wear how ever much of it you consume.

I actually don't like most of it. Only the boozy stuff.

HonestChieffan 12-13-2015 08:06 PM

Far prefer great Irish Coffee. Eggnog all sucks. Milk punch is nice but yankees dont get it.

Pepe Silvia 12-13-2015 08:36 PM

I absolutely love egg nog. It can be a little rich so from time to time I buy that milk nog which is just as good.

Fire Me Boy! 04-07-2016 05:04 PM

Just sampled the eggnog. Wow, it's very smooth, very creamy, and boozy, but the booze has really mellowed. This is damn fine stuff.

Made it on 11/29, so about 4.5.

Nothing says welcome to spring and warm weather like a nice glass of thick eggnog. You should try some immediately after mowing the lawn in July/August

It wasn't a full glass. Was just a sample, like 2 tablespoons. I wanted to see how it was coming along. I hadn't tasted it since the 2-month mark.

I like to see how things evolve - it's the same reason I bought like 8 bottles of 2000 vintage port in 2004 and open a bottle ever 2-3 years. It's a lot of fun seeing how things change with time.

Fire Me Boy! 11-23-2016 07:06 PM

Just shy of one year! Daaaamn. Boozy, but smooth. Super creamy, almost a silky mouthfeel.

You're welcome to participate or ignore. Your choice.

JD10367 11-24-2016 05:00 AM

I use eggnog instead of cream in my coffee during the holidays. But most of them are made with high fructose corn syrup so I have to read ingredient labels to find the few in the supermarket that don't.
