NBA approves selling ad space on jerseys
http://www.foxnews.com/sports/2016/0...?intcmp=hplnws
The NBA will begin selling jersey sponsorships in 2017-18, becoming the first major North American sports league to put partners' logos on players' uniforms. The three-year trial was approved Friday by NBA owners and will take effect when the league's contract with Nike begins. The patches will appear on the front left of the jersey, opposite Nike's logo, and measure about 2 1/2 by 2 1/2 inches. Logos appear on international and MLS soccer jerseys, and many athletes in individual sports wear their sponsors' attire in competition. Commissioner Adam Silver had said this step was inevitable as an additional revenue generator. WNBA teams already have logos, and NBA clubs were wearing them on practice jerseys. "Jersey sponsorships provide deeper engagement with partners looking to build a unique association with our teams and the additional investment will help grow the game in exciting new ways," Silver said in a statement. "We're always thinking about innovative ways the NBA can remain competitive in a global marketplace, and we are excited to see the results of this three-year trial." |
The WNBA-isification of the NBA is under way.

The NASCARification of the NBA begins.

The golf of the NBA begins.

I have no problem with this. As long as they limit it to one or two sponsors, and small patches, they can do this in every sport. I just don't want it to look like a NASCAR firesuit

BOO HISSSS
phuuuuueeeeyyy |
The NBA needs money more than they need viewers, I guess.
This sort of thing is offensive to me. Just because it's possible to sell ad space on something doesn't mean you should do it. |
The coed league softball of the NBA begins.
|
Hope they sell jerseys to the public without that bullshit

The croquetification of the NBA begins

The soccerification of basketball continues

The poloification of the NBA continues.

Reporter: "Peyton, what was the key to the game?" Manning: "I'd like to thank Elway Football Sports and the Papa John's/Nationwide/Budweiser/Pennzoil team on the great win today. Thanks to the Pepsi coaching crew we were in and out of the huddle quick every time. There was that big collision in the 2nd and we got a little loose there in the 3rd quarter, but with some adjustments from the Microsoft Surface tablets we were able to finish strong." |

Like it or not, this is coming to football too eventually.

Remember, the Premier League does this with the promise that you'll see no commercials before halftime of a soccer match. The NBA makes no such promise. So **** you, basketball fans!

well, yeah, but it's kind of hard to throw in commercials during a soccer game since there really is no breaks (even after a flop, and the long wait for the "magic spray").
so it's not like the premiere league is doing everyone a solid with that guarantee. |
I guess I'm used to this in the cycling world - the name of the team is the sponsor's name.
Though, I'm not looking forward to rooting for the Kansas City Cheez-its. |
That settles it. I'm not going to watch next season for the 60th year straight.

Nothing says basketball like an insurance company logo on a 22 year old black guys jersey.
Will it be like a Hooters or Aflec? McDonalds? Hertz? |

Well, that and I'm not sure that cycling is televised. |

They just said it would be Nike on one shoulder and a business on the other
|
The only sport that went the other way was MMA, specifically the UFC. They used to have ads on every inch of clothing, then they dialed it back to a couple unobtrusive patches.

Do they plan on using this as a way of cutting down on commercials?
