Most Cursed Sports Town?
Now with KC and Cleveland winning championships, who is now the most cursed sports town?
I think it would be Buffalo. Not only the four superbowl losses in a row but also the 1999 Stanley Cup finals and the skate in the crease game. The other would be Minneapolis. Yes, the Twins won a couple of World Series in the early 90s but since then a lot of heartbreak in football. The Atlanta Falcons playoff game and this years missed chip shot field goal come to mind. |

From Wikipedia.
San Diego has the largest championship drought in the nation with at least two major-league sports franchises; dating back to 1963 (47 Years as of 2010), as well as being the largest United States city to have not won a Super Bowl, World Series, Stanley Cup, NBA Finals or any other Major League sports championship. Some fans believe that there is a curse on the major league teams in the city. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Sports_in_San_Diego |
Definitely not Minneapolis. Any team that has won anything in the last 25 years is not even in the discussion.
|
Buffalo and San Diego are up there. I'd put Buffalo ahead of San Diego though because San Diego just doesn't give a shit it seems.

Minneapolis was the first one that came to mind for me. All the Vikings horrible playoff losses. The 98 NFC title game when Gary Anderson missed his first kick all year. Getting waxed in 2000 against the Giants. The Favre NFC title game, then last year, missing a 30 yard kick. Then the Twins won the division a bunch of times in the 00's but never did anything with it. The Timberwolves play in a league where half the teams make the playoffs and they still haven't made it in like a decade... although things are looking up for them. The Wild haven't done anything great either. Atlanta's saved because the Braves dominated the 90's. Buffalo would have to be up near the top, the 90s were horrible. Four Super Bowl losses and then the Music City Miracle. That's an all timer. Then the Sabres blew their finals. I think they've been to the conference finals a couple times since but never got over the top. |
Yeah, but the Twins won the World Series twice in five years.
|
Has to be Buffalo.

When you live in a city that experiences actual inclement weather that limits your time to spend outside, or just out and about, that's when sports becomes your escape, especially during football season. People gather and commiserate with one another, and if the local team does well, it lifts all spirits. When it doesn't, it layers a malaise that is palatable. I just don't know how anyone could live in San Diego and let the fortunes of their sports teams come to the conclusion they are "cursed". If that's a curse, we should all be so fortunate to find one! |
It's ****ing Minneapolis. no contest. It's the only one with all 4 major sports and lots of suck. The Vikings have been bigger choke-artists and heartbreakers then the Chiefs in the past 2 decades. The Twolves are perennial suck.

No city has been more cock-teased than KC...

Drought Prone cities:
Several North American cities are believed to have championship droughts among their "Big Four" pro sports teams: 89 years - Ottawa since 1927 Stanley Cup (The CFL's Rough Riders won nine Grey Cups, last in 1976) 53 years - San Diego since 1963 AFL title (pre-Super Bowl), no World Series title, no NBA title (Clippers relocated to Los Angeles in 1984) 51 years - Buffalo since 1965 AFL title (pre-Super Bowl), no Stanley Cup title since joining NHL in 1970-71, no NBA title (Braves relocated to San Diego in 1978). 46 years - Vancouver no Stanley Cups since joining NHL in 1970 (The CFL's BC Lions have won six Grey Cups, last in 2011) 45 years - Milwaukee since 1971 NBA title 39 years - Portland since 1977 NBA title. (MLS's Portland Timbers won the 2015 MLS Cup) 37 years - Winnipeg no Stanley Cup title since joining NHL in 1979 (The CFL's Blue Bombers have won ten Grey Cups, last in 1990) 37 years - Salt Lake City no NBA titles since the Jazz relocated in 1979. (MLS's Real Salt Lake won the 2009 MLS Cup) 31 years - Sacramento waiting for first since 1985. 28 years - Charlotte waiting for first since 1988. (Super Bowl appearances in 2004 and 2016) 27 years - Calgary since 1989 Stanley Cup (The CFL's Stampeders have won four Grey Cups since then, last in 2014) 27 years - Orlando waiting for first since 1989. 26 years - Edmonton since 1990 Stanley Cup (The CFL's Eskimos have won four Grey Cups since then, last in 2015) 26 years - Cincinnati since 1990 World Series title (no Super Bowl titles). 25 years - Minneapolis–St. Paul since 1991 World Series title (1969 NFL title (non-Super Bowl), 1954 NBA title, however franchise relocated; no Stanley Cup titles). This is the longest current championship drought for any metro area with a team in each of the "Big Four" leagues. 25 years - San Jose No Stanley Cup title since joining NHL in 1991. 24 years - Washington, D.C. since 1992 Super Bowl. (1978 NBA title, 1924 World Series title, however franchise relocated, no Stanley Cups). |

Why would anyone move to Buffalo? |
**** Cleveland. Even before the Cavs won... Most of those people root for Ohio State, right? All the misery is overblown.

As far as long term history, San Diego, but recent history it's probably Buffalo.
The Bills are by far the most irrelevant team in the NFL. They haven't made the playoffs this century. even Cleveland has done that. You think going 2 decades without a playoff win is bad? Think about 2 decades without even playing in January? With Brady and Bill in NE a few more years, they will assuredly not make the playoffs due to a zero % chance of winning the division. Speaking of NE, they are 27-3 vs Buffalo since Brady started, and 1 of those 3 losses was a game that NE played with backups bc they already had their seed wrapped up. My God. Can you imagine not making the playoffs for 16 straight years and watching the Broncos or Raiders beat you 27/30 times in that streak? Poor poor bastards. |

If the Royals hadn't won the World Series, I'm assuming KC would be in the conversation?????
|
Minneapolis is easily top 5. Choke jobs. Bad teams. I swear I could hear the stadium groan when the FG went wide left.
The worst part is that if an outsider (non-native minnesotan) criticizes the local teams-you get roasted. If a local does it-its acceptable. I've lived here 15 years-hate the Vikes and still am considered an outsider. Passive aggressive bullshit. The Lynx are clearly the best team in town. |
Hard for me not to put Buffalo at the top in terms of overall misery.

But Royals and Sporting KC..... |
Yeah, KC has had some brutal stretches, but I don't think it's quite in the same class as some of these other cities anymore.
Even with 20 years of horrible baseball, the Royals are now one of the most successful expansion teams ever. They've won 2 WS and 4 pennants in less than 50 years. Most all the teams ahead of them now have been around for a century. Look at the division. The Indians have been around for 115 years, they have 2 WS and 5 pennants. The Twins organization has been around 115 years, 3 titles and 6 pennants. The White Sox have 3 titles and 5 pennants. The Royals are right there with them. You could go on, teams like the Phillies and Cubs who have been around for 100+ years and only have 2 titles. |
KC isn't in the conversation currently. If this was 2014, sure.

Minnesota has won something in the last few decades. They're out. Buffalo and San Diego are neck and neck. But again, I'd give the edge to Buffalo because they care, people in San Diego could give two shits what their sports teams do. Sea World gets more attention than their teams.

Definitely Minnesota. Not just the drought, but had two teams leave get success in their new cities in the Lakers and Northstars.
|
I saw this article several days ago stating the same thing that is stated in the OP.
|
Milwalkie sucks
|
Buffalo has one ****ing sports team. Which means they have a shitty NFL franchise and not that they're a cursed sports town. They shouldn't even be in the mix of this discussion.

So if you count towns that have two major sports teams who have never won a championship, it's Buffalo, San Diego and Nashville. i give the nod to Buffalo because San Diego has the best weather in the world, while Buffalo has the worst weather in the US, and Nashville at least has Elvis. |

I know so little about hockey, I didn't know the Sabres existed.

I would never consider a city with just one sports team to be cursed if they don't win.
Buffalo and San Diego are pretty high on the list IMHO. Cleveland may have slipped one notch now that LeBron brought an NBA championship to the city. |

Still Cleveland. The Cavs are being treated like welcome relief, but they're an afterthought.
