I really think this is legit.

If you live in an apartment you shouldn't be smoking on a balcony like that. Wow.

Hope you, your wife and kid are ok.

How exactly is using a smoker on the patio going to blow out the roof inside the house?

I haven't been trying to get details on how it happened, just trying to make sure there's nothing he needs right now.

He's working on moving stuff out now. Says he didn't lose anything, and no one was hurt. The fire didn't spread to any other apartments.

If it is a covered balcony, it might of caught the roof on fire.

About the only thing that could have happened was he caught the outside of the exterior wall on fire and the fire department had to tear out the drywall and ceiling to make sure the fire wasn't inside the walls/ceiling.

Sucks, probably sucks worse for his poor neighbors

Gonna have a hard time getting the insurance money with a picture of the smoker that close to the building

Only explanation would be fire dept. But I don't see water. Or smoke damage. Or scorch marks.

Looks like something outside caught fire, and the water used to put it out messed up the interior of the home.

srvy 07-23-2016 05:37 PM

That insulation backing is burnt. Total guess on my part but possibly the deck floor caught fire and traveled on to the outside wall then burned through exterior to interior and up in to interior ceiling. The insulation looks wet and the fire department concentrated there so not to allow to spread to other units. With this required cutting roof from outside and also ceiling inside. Of course this is just total speculation on my part.

lewdog 07-23-2016 05:40 PM

If he did cause this, I guarantee his apartment/condo building had a violation about smoking or BBQ'ing anything on a patio that small.

He's gonna have a hard time fighting that one.

srvy 07-23-2016 05:40 PM

How it happens is charcoal bbqing on a wood deck. Lots of fires are started this way and many apartments do not allow anymore not sure about townhomes.

I had a grill on a wood deck smaller than that, and my landlord OK'd it. Even added it into my lease.

lewdog 07-23-2016 05:41 PM

And that's definitely his place. He's posted beer and TV pics before and it's the same TV and couch. My memory is good.

In a Condo/Apartment?

A propane grill usually is ok.

Charcoal or other means, usually not.

If it's a large complex, it's always in their lease that you can't have open fire/charcoal BBQ's because of safety and liability.

Charcoal and gas for me. This was also close to 20 years ago, so there's that, too.

srvy 07-23-2016 05:44 PM

The WSM isnt damaged leaves me to wonder if it was the starter chimney. I guess I will stop speculating and let Inmem explain it to us when he is ready. Must have been a scary thing but thank his lucky stars no one was hurt.

God damn if it's not bs I feel a little bad.

cdcox 07-23-2016 05:53 PM

Sucks. I used to put a tray of wet sand under my smoker when using a charcoal/wood smoker on a wooden deck.

Chief Roundup 07-23-2016 05:54 PM

Seems odd that a smoker could get this out of hand. I didn't think they actually used fire like a grill but I have never used a smoker.

I had a $30 elcheapo bullet smoker for a while. Coals could fall out the air vent holes. The pan of wet sand went under the whole smoker.

Did you read my other posts? I have never used a smoker. The only ones I have ever seen had the lava rocks in the bottom that got heated by gas or that electric thing that looks like a small element that would be in a stove and had the pan of water above that.
I have grilled several times.

The fire flames isnt as hot but to charcoal is. The blacksmith smelted iron with coal and if he couldn't get fossil fuel coal he made charcoal from wood.

Pork butt was smoking away. Neighbors (being in a California duplex) thought that the place was on fire. Fire department arrives, sprays down the apartment ruining all the things.

And worst of all, the smoker dropped below 200.

Sorry, I don't think it's funny. It's not being "self serious." A Chiefsplanet member had a significant fire at his home. He can't live there anymore.

If this were some beloved member of this board, people cracking jokes right now wouldn't be accepted.

Inmem is a human being, a husband, a father. I think when someone suffers a tragedy - and the loss of a home to fire is tragedy in my book - you don't crack jokes.

It's a message board. People are going to say what they are going to say. Inmem knows this and he wouldn't have posted a thread and picture without knowing some jabs would be made.
