SERVER: It's that time again... another look at upgrades

Ok so there is a new version of our forum software out and MAYBE this time it is worth upgrading to. I am going to do another fake install for us to play with and look at as soon as I can. I'm also looking at some minor hardware upgrades but honestly we seem to be doing pretty good on that front for a change.

The biggest change in the new VB software seems to be that they fixed the add on system (or so they claim) and they have a nifty new VB Messenger(like a poor man's FB Messenger)

I'll keep everyone posted on what I find out and link up the test area soon.

If anyone want to donate to the cause, feel free.

pr_capone 08-11-2016 05:28 PM

the auto removal of tables from the conversion of version 3 to 5 was a nice kicker in 5.2.2

Spott 08-11-2016 05:34 PM

I think tags would fix the server issues.

Pitt Gorilla 08-11-2016 05:35 PM

The site would probably run better if you simply removed all of the threads/posts with which you disagreed. :)

Done. Thanks for keeping this stuff working, Kyle. I thoroughly enjoy CP, it's members and the occasional nugget of wisdom proffered by the CP community.

Austin, can you upgrade the talent around here?

TLO 08-11-2016 09:06 PM

I think giving Dr. Pepper his thread starting privileges back would be a major improvement. :)

Seriously though - I'll see if i can't chip in a 10 spot next week when I get paid.

Just an FYI the server hiccup a minute ago was me... just doing database stuff. Should be all good now.

displacedinMN 08-19-2016 06:19 PM

What is going to happen to chat?

I heard Chrome is going to kill support for Flash-as many others have done. This is supposed to happen very soon.

My web page has a flash component and I will have to revamp it soon because of 'problems' with flash.

Flash will still run but the browser will ask before running it. So chat will work fine for quite some time. I am also looking at HTML5 alternatives.

AustinChief 08-30-2016 11:33 AM

If you see any server issues today it will be me working in the background on some more upgrades you can't see but should slightly increase performance and stability before we start the season.

Other than our old ass version of Vbulletin, the server should be in tip top shape and able to handle whatever we throw at it this year.

All I ask is that you don't get rid of my sailboat icon in chat. It's what keeps this team winning.

I'm excited to try the new version. Chat is a great alternative to having to read Clay posts in game threads.

We have our monthly server costs which basically haven't changed. The only additional costs will be if we move to VB5 (which is being vetted now) and possibly if we use a fancy hosted chat solution(looking at a few options here as well). Otherwise most of what I have been doing only "costs" my time to get it done.

Our monthly costs are mostly covered by the ads at the bottom of the page although that has fallen off a bit this year. It doesn't seem to be related to activity more just a function of the market paying less I think.

I have a few more things to do before the season. Some of these may screw with the board for a few minutes at a time, maybe even 30 or so. Any suggestions for the best time to do this? I'm thinking Thursday night late after the Broncos get beat and we have had our fun basking in it. :D

Is there a better time (besides tonight, I won't have time tonight)

I'd let this go for 4-5 replies, then you pick a time that best suits YOU. Just drop a note in this thread, and perhaps the downtime site too, then do your thing my man...

BTW, anytime is fine with me...

This ain't "work" so there ain't no need for any stupid after-hours (late-night) bullshit.

And I don't think we say this enough to you, or anybody with a hand in keeping this site going, but THANK YOU... You folks are awesome...

Not really. First, it didn't cost each of us $800. Next, it doesn't happen EVERY YEAR! Next, the code still works after six months (so not Apple).

AustinChief 09-09-2016 11:51 AM

Work got in the way of any chat upgrade testing last night so it will either be tonight or monday night. Just an FYI.

Moving to Xenforo would be a pretty big "culture shock" for people since there are so many features people are used to that would be missing. But then again, vB5 is quite a bit different too.

At some point, we'll just have to rip on the bandaid and get it over. It's hard when vB 3.8 still works perfectly fine (if a bit outdated) though.

JoeyChuckles 09-09-2016 07:15 PM

I haven't contributed to the site monetarily yet, so my opinion doesn't matter, but we could use that new chat before Sunday. It's our one refuge from Clay.

DaFace 09-11-2016 12:41 AM

Through a bit of jury-rigging, I was able to update our chat software to the latest version. Unfortunately, the main reason for updating it was so that we'd have a theoretical non-flash version of it for people on phones (and who just hate Flash).

The upgrade seems to work fine, but the AJAX version doesn't. So it's a minor upgrade that doesn't really add much over the old version.

Sigh.

Should work now. I had to reconfigure from scratch, so permissions weren't set.

I'm calling it quits for tonight, but I can fix any other issues tomorrow (or just revert to the old version if it comes down to it).

There's a ChiefsPlanet style in there that should look like the old one.

You can also try clearing your Adobe Flash cache by right-clicking on the chat window, going to Settings, clicking on the folder icon, turning local storage off, closing everything, then turning it back on. That will set everything to the new defaults.

Though I'm not the one making the decision, I think Xenforo is the way I'd go at this point. I'm pretty convinced vBulletin just isn't all that great anymore.

Even though it looks similar, though, there are a LOT of things that would have to change. Though I haven't looked at it extensively, even things like reputation, first post on every page, user ignore, thread ignore, etc. might not work. People would survive, but it'd take an adjustment.

XF has addons for that stuff apparently. That was one of the things brought up over there. Not sure about the static first post, but the ignore stuff at least

I think on page two or after it should be automatically shortened , and images / embeds removed with a (....more) type of button to reveal the stuff. Theres a few dipshits that KNOW better that STILL insist on making the OP too ****ing long KNOWING it will be like that on every page. Morons. It is because of these few idiots that I would suggest the above...
Also, newer people that dont realize they can put things in spoiler tags or whatnot it gets old having to explain how to not to make an annoying OP.

my 2 cents

Nickhead 09-30-2016 03:45 PM

my theory goes like this. 'generally' when someone opens a thread the first time, they go to the op. now they have read the op, anywhere in the thread pages they click they already know the subject of matter of thread. not on vb, but smf, they had an option where the individual user could disable the original post beyond page 1.

obviously its not a deal breaker, just providing feedback :D

In a perfect world I'd have time to code things so the 1st post is collapsed on every page other than the first one. That way you could click a + to expand and read it if needed.

Nickhead 09-30-2016 04:03 PM
