No screen passes during preseason...Nagy?

I'm sure I'm not the only one to notice..but KC didn't run many dump off screens. I'm not certain if it was intentional or an evolution..due to Schwarz and Nagy coming into the fold...but Smith was, repeatedly, throwing longer passes than the last 3 years.

Is this the year Smith finally comes out of his conservative shell? Was this a bi-product of not leaning on Charles as the central focus of the offense?

Hammock Parties 08-28-2016 10:53 PM

it's not like we actually need to practice them

i think this team has the screen pass down

OldSchool 08-28-2016 10:57 PM

Wait until Charles gets back. Reid is going to abuse the hell out of those 3 TE sets.

I think Nagy is pressing Smith now that Pederson is gone...and they learned how to survive without Charles.

I think Reid just replaces West with Charles..and keeps using Ware like last year.

tk13 08-28-2016 11:01 PM

Reid has always loved the screen game... with Duce Staley, Westbrook, McCoy, and now Charles. I'm sure we'll see it once the games count.

This is why I think KC keeps O'shannassy..that 3 TE set has been ****ed up due to injury for like 2 years.

That formation kills...they need to keep 4.

I like all 4 of our top TEs.

Harris and Travis are behemoths out there and both can run faster than most linebackers in the league.

KChiefs1 08-28-2016 11:06 PM

Chiefs have the best screen game in the NFL.

Yeah..but they use it WAY too much. It became a crutch for Smith.....

I think not worrying about Stephenson getting him killed is paying off...

Preseason is vanilla

Screens are like 80% of our passing offense during the season

Nah, it was just the most effective way to move the ball given the state of the OL and the lack of natural receiving talent.

All of the screens was just a way to neutralize the terrible OL play and lack of guys who could get open 1 on 1.

eDave 08-29-2016 12:29 AM

Andy is hiding those plays. Don't want to tip off the competition in preseason.

That is what I was getting at....Smith has had a shit line since he's been here. He will be getting more time this year...

Nickhead 08-29-2016 01:06 AM

somewhere here, i think i stated, that the chiefs oline will be one of the best in the league this year.

i think you nailed it. no need for the screen, if you dont need it as often.

this year is going to be a culmination of the last three years combined.

if conley and maclin lay it all out on the line, alex is going to chuck it.

one question i have tho is this:

why is it, at least that i can recall, the chiefs never intentionally use the back shoulder pass?

i see team after team do it, but i dont recall the chiefs utilizing this tool?

I think it's possible they are pushing Smith to work on downfield passing. They claimed that was a focus last preseason but it never translated to games. Screens lose their effectiveness when a D stacks the box and doesn't respect the passing attack. A good offense needs to be able to draw the D in when they are getting run on, and spread them out when passed on. It's why so many people have been critical of Smith. It's not just a desire for bombs and fantasy stats... it actually adds more dimensions that defenses have to account for.

Deberg_1990 08-29-2016 05:54 AM

Charles and West will schred on screens this year

Kman34 08-29-2016 05:54 AM

I'm willing to bet there is a bubble screen in the first drive of the season opener....

Hog's Gone Fishin 08-29-2016 05:55 AM

According to the new NFL rules implemented this year no passes under 20 yards are allowed.

R Clark 08-29-2016 05:59 AM

Better buy stock in that yellow flag material with Alex playing .

I thought I saw about 3 failed ones for losses late during the Bears game

Well, in Alex's defense, that was Reid calling that shot not Alex. Reid has always been too in love with the screen game. I've always found his play calling with Jamaal in the game frustrating. I think he uses west and ware in the screen game less because Charles is better in space.

I want to see less screens this year with Charles, not more. The Chiefs are at their best when they have a good run pass balance.

Ha ha...now go back to your hole..

RunKC 08-29-2016 07:27 AM

We've used Andy signature jet sweep and jet sweep fake with a run up the middle quite a bit. I would imagine that Andy has a whole new stock of plays designed for this year.

I would imagine some spread offense plays we haven't seen yet were added.

I've always assumed it is because Smith won't take a chance on the interception. Or would there be any other reason?

Why put the blocking schemes on film even if it is generic? Agreed. We don't need to practice screens.

Don't remind Reid of that dam play or we'll start running 15 a game again.
