That's terrible... even a rising superstar with millions can have their life abruptly ended, and only 24 years old. Such a sad accident.

Why Not? 09-25-2016 07:41 AM

This is really sad. He seemed like a good genuine dude.

C3HIEF3S 09-25-2016 07:46 AM

First thing I read this morning and I think I am about to throw up. It hurts remembering the video of Jeff Loria reuniting Jose with his grandmother in Miami after being separated for years. Defected from Cuba, return from TJ all for naught. Oh, he was going to be a father too.

This one stings. RIP Jose. I will never forget 2013 when the Royals played the Marlins in KC and he single-handedly put that lowly team on his back and led them to a 1-0 win. It was one of the more frustrating games to watch as a fan, but as a viewer of the game it was one of the first times I learned to respect the flat out talent of a young stud like him.

Munson 09-25-2016 07:48 AM

Sad news indeed.

Looks like the boat was going too fast and hit the rocks.

At least police say in this case there's no evidence of alcohol. But we'll see.

summer time is the worst at the hospital. ATV, boating, motorcycle accidents. People being reckless for the adrenaline or because they were intoxicated.

You get one brain and spinal cord, protect it.

Mr. Flopnuts 09-26-2016 06:49 PM

I've been saddened about all of this, but watching that lead off HR and the reaction to it was moving to say the very very least.

They played the audio of the solo trumpet playing take me out to the ballgame.

Got goddamned dusty in this Combine. Radio said DeeGordin jacked his first HR of the season wearing his helmet.

Going that speed would have launched them like a rocket either into the side of the boat or onto the rocks.

That was a powerful tribute. I can't even begin to imagine having to play through that.

Quick question, and I don't want to sound like a dick because it doesn't matter either way. But does anyone think that pitch to Dee Gordon was grooved? Even if it was, it's still one hell of a moment.

I think the wreck happened in a pass called "governors cut". Very dangerous pass even for experienced boaters and that boat was wide open. Very sad

Yeah, I think there are many who think that pitch was grooved. Over on reddit.com/r/baseball, that view is being discussed, https://www.reddit.com/r/baseball/co..._plate/d83ennm

Either way, still a remarkable and moving tribute.

Yes, if true and I think it is, it's pretty awesome sportsmanship by Bartolo colon too. He threw an 85 mph Meatball over the plate. Pretty cool stuff

Why Not? 09-27-2016 07:39 AM

I don't think it was. Bartolo Colon doesn't throw very hard to begin with. If you look at pitch charts on most home runs, you'll see a lot of them occur on pitches over the middle. Especially when a pitcher is behind in the count. Why do you think pitchers always talk about working both sides of the plate?

Plus, this is Dee Gordon. The dude doesn't hit homers. Was Colon thinking "let me groove one so this guy can honor Jose with an infield single"?

Also, Mets in the thick of a playoff race and do you honor a competitor's memory by not competing? Colon clearly didn't have it last night, as he got rocked all game. Sometimes unbelievable moments are just what they are.

Ouch.....still a tragedy??

Jose Fernandez had cocaine, alcohol in system during fatal boat crash

Mianmi Marlins star pitcher Jose Fernandez had cocaine in his system when he and two friends were killed in a boat crash last month off Miami Beach, the Miami-Dade County Medical Examiner's office said Saturday.

Associate Medical Examiner Kenneth Hutchins listed "boat crash" as the cause of death but also said Fernandez was legally drunk with a blood alcohol concentration of .147.
Fernandez, 24, suffered blunt-force injuries to the head and torso, along with skull and jaw fractures when the boat he was in hit a jetty near Miami Beach in the early morning hours of September 25.

Authorities have not determined who was piloting the boat.

Yes. Doing Coke and being drunk while driving a speedboat recklessly in the middle of the night is a deserved fate.

Is it sad? Obviously. But it's not a tragedy and the Marlins are in a tough spot now honoring a guy killed while on Coke. That's a terrible message to send to kids.

It is a tragedy, and can easily serve as a lesson to children that even the biggest stars can be victims of drug use.

Hey, you made the same point as I did!:D

DaneMcCloud 10-29-2016 05:10 PM

Having a few drinks and a line of cocaine isn't what killed Fernandez and his friends.

They died because whomever was driving was very inexperienced piloting a boat, wasn't familiar with the terrain, while dealing with a pitch black night. It would have happened regardless of whether or not the pilot was drinking or partying.

Also, center console fishing boats don't usually get to a high rate of speed, which points to inexperience. It's not like they were in a Wellcraft Scarab.

No, I cannot accept he was a "victim" of drugs. That's a cop out. A victim of drugs is someone who gets hooked on painkillers. It isn't someone snorting coke and partying on a boat.

Fine. Semantics. He killed himself due to drugs, but this lesson could show children that it could happen to anyone, right?

The people he loved were certainly victims here.

What? Of course drugs and alcohol are part of the equation. Mix in testosterone and you got 3 guys going way too fast in a speed boat with zero visability in a dangerous environment. I guarantee you had Cocain and alcohol not been involved the likelihood that these three would still be alive exponentially increases.
