Another Police Officer Killed in the Line of Duty

This happened in my community today:

Los Angeles County Sheriff Sergeant Steve Owen, a 29 year veteran of the LASD, was killed in the line of duty today in Lancaster. The suspect, a parolee, is in custody.

This is such a sad day here in the Antelope Valley. Pray for our cops.

Sergeant Owen is in the back row of this picture, 2nd from left.

RIP. It's a shame, but I'm glad they got the SOB who did it. I'm sorry for your communities loss.

As a side note, that picture above was when Owen received a medal of valor, the department's highest honor.

His wife is an arson investigator, also with Los Angeles County Sheriff. I can't verify this, but it's being widely circulated here that he was 2 days shy of his retirement.

Small consolation that his wife mother, and kids were apparently able to get to the hospital to be with him before he died.

My heart goes out to the family and friends and his fellow cops.

My brother was a cop for like 10 years. I think he was a good cop treated people fairly and even so gave the Mayors kid a ticket and or a ride in the back of the pd car for drunk driving back to the station. Well that didn't set well for the Mayor and do to rural county politics he just isn't a cop anymore.

The fear was always you never knew how a routine traffic stop could go someone could just shoot you and drive off and that be that. That's what cops have to deal with every day. I think they are brave people to put on the badge.

How would you like a job where everyday someone might kill you. Brave people.

That being said, what's Tommy Lasorda doing in the picture?

Is that Kareem Abdul Jabbar in the back right corner? Obviously only one not standing on the benches.

Roofers and construction workers have a more dangerous job!

Ok, non-troll; of course RIP, brother. We'll take it from here. It hurts to keep hearing these stories, but happy to see the initial responses are supportive in nature.

A woman reported a burglary in progress...the officers responded to the call.

Sgt. Owen went to the back of the apartment to check and was shot there. His partner rushed to the gunfire and found him...the gunman then ran the other way to the cruiser and took off in it...he rammed another patrol car coming in and injured another deputy (who is fine), and then he ran into a nearby home and took two hostages, one of whom managed to text information of where they were...anyways, he eventually got caught hopping a wall trying to escape and did get shot at some point. Unfortunately he survived.

A St. Louis County police officer was shot and killed this morning as well.

Quote:

The officer and his partner were assigned to the Affton Southwest Precinct, and responded to a call for a disturbance in the 10700 block of Arno Drive. That address is located in Green Park.

St. Louis County Chief Belmar believes that the Officer Schneider encountered the 18-year-old suspect in the driver's seat of a vehicle. Schneider asked to see his hands. The suspect immediately opened fire, striking the officer. His partner returned fire and wounded the suspect. The police officer was also critically wounded in the shoot-out. He died from his injuries
Almost to a man, officers will tell you that approaching a car is the scariest thing they do.

****. This kid patrolled our subdivision regularly.

My wife is the head of the HOA and knew him pretty well, as he responded to a lot of calls from our residents.

RIP, Blake.

He was an excellent young officer, the little I know of him and from what his friends say. One of our officers went through the academy with him

I'm very sorry to see this happening so often. Blessings to your community.

Just a couple more things about Sgt. Owen and I'll stop...and of course keep Officer Snyder's family in my prayers as well.

Last night, my kids and I were on our way home from church and while crossing the freeway overpass, saw 2 fire engines parked with the lights on and spotlights shining up into the air. There were about 70-80 civilians standing on the bridge with flags. Turned out they were moving Sgt. Owen's body from the hospital to LA for the investigation. So we parked the car and waited about 45 minutes for the procession.

No joke, there were at least 150 black and whites that drove single-file down the 14 Freeway escorting the body and the officer's family and fire engines/other emergency vehicles and civilians packing out every single bridge between Lancaster and the LA Basin. We'll never forget it.

And then this bit from the Los Angeles ABC Affiliate:

That is why every year the call comes to me for supporting the police in raising fund, I never turn it down.
