I Hear That Train A Comin'....

Really cool steam locomotive will be coming to Topeka, Lawrence, KC and points eastward on to St. Louis soon. You can see it's schedule here. Great opportunity to take the kids to see a relic from the WWII Ear of steam locomotives. It'll be at Union Station in KC on Saturday and Sunday Oct 15th and Oct 16th.

I bought a ticket to ride one on the Black Hills. They didn't tell us until we showed up that it was broke down and we got a diesel rig. Lame.

I drove this one when I was a kid. One of my uncles ran the division of the company that owned it:

Why do you act like a jerkoff in every thread?

You're a special kind of asshole.

That sombitch is amazing to see and hear pulling a load uphill.

Interesting routing. I hear tell that the only turntable big enough to turn it around is in Council Bluffs. But given the route outlined, that won't be needed.

The main track of the old MoPac line run about two blocks from my house. The Amtrak that runs from KC to STL uses that line. I've seen steam trains that have visited KC use that track before. This time, out of Union Station, the train will follow the UP tracks on the south side of the Missouri River, going to Buckner then on to Lexington in Lafayette County. The train tracks bump up right next to the river just to the West of Lexington. That would be a cool place to see the train rolling. Too bad it's on a Monday or I'd go check that out.

Its the last of the UP 800s and is a 4-8-4 Northern. And the only steam locomotive never to be pulled off a major American Railroad roster... I've baby sat it at night, many times when they would run her down from Cheyenne to Aksarben for September fest.... I've road in the cab several times from Omaha to Columbus and back. Unfortunately I've never run it.

The UP is currently rebuilding the 4014 BiG Boy. Largest locomotives ever built..
