R.I.P. comedian Kevin Meaney

Died in his sleep at 60. Too young.

Almost a throwback. What they call a comedian's comedian. A more manic Louie Anderson

Too young.

back when pg comedy was funny. ROFL

Baby Lee 10-22-2016 01:08 AM

Kind of bittersweet story, he.

Came out 5 or so years ago, got a divorce and married a dude.

From the sound of it, it wasn't until he started working on Broadway that it even occurred to him that gay was something people were.

IIRC his split with his wife was amicable and she became his manager.

Seemed happy and contented, then poof. Dead.

Nickhead 10-22-2016 01:14 AM

i know i will be 'flamed' for this with my lgbt thread, but it doesnt matter what one thinks feels or believes. good intentioned people are those who are missed most.

No one asked you to be OK with anything, I mentioned some facts about a dude who just died.

BL's easily offended. And a semi-celeb died, so he's gonna be a little touchy.

Demonpenz 10-22-2016 01:50 AM

I don't agree with his life style, but hope he rests in peace.

i think this is what i meant, but i engaged in what i thought was his ability to 'politicize' the moment. i had no idea he was gay till pointed out :D

Never found the guy to be funny, but I know many loved him. RIP

Had to google him, it still didn't click. I don't recall ever seeing him or hearing of him. RIP Kevin Meaney.

That's what I thought too but that doesn't show respect. You know who never got any respect & was funny? Rodney Dangerfield that's who never got respect at all.

From a personal perspective? A philosophical perspective? A religious perspective? A genetic perspective?

Does a homosexual agree with your lifestyle? Should a homosexual agree with your lifestyle? What is your lifestyle? Who should agree with it?

I looked up some of his more recent stuff, and he's doing a lot more blue material than I remember. Not as funny, imo.

I heard him tell that story on "The Bob and Tom Show" a few years ago, pretty wild that the wife stayed on as his manager, no hard feelings at all

The first thing I always think of with that guy is "your father never said that!"

RIP

I just watched Big this morning and saw him. Didn't realized he passed. bummer.

he was one of the many comics I used to watch as a young teen on HBO Comedy Hour type shows. I remember him, Judy Gold, Louie Anderson, Kevin Pollack, Dom Irrera, Rita Rudner, Paula Poundstone, Richard Jeni etc.

Really, I only recall him because he was good friends with a lot of other comedians I listen to, and they bring him up or interview him on occasion.

I didn't post this condolence thread to suggest he's as big a tragedy as Prince or anything. Just that it was sudden, he was relatively young, and his story is a bit of bittersweet human interest.

I mean the 'oddity' of being gay aside, the notion of not even realizing that gay was possible until your mid-50s, then embracing it wholeheartedly, is an even greater oddity in the current day.

Ming the Merciless 10-22-2016 02:40 PM

I'm just trying to remember...I've had HBO like even when I was a kid and watched a ton of stand up.

It just seems like I should know this guy from the name alone....but even after the Carson clip I can't quite place him. It's more likely my memory , I'm sure I saw him at some point...just bugs me I don't remember

yeah, he was definitely part of that HBO circuit (for lack of a better term) there for a few years. but never really branched off from it or became more popular.

you're probably right - if you watched that HBO stand-up, you probably saw him but not must have resonated enough to get into your memory.

Dayze 10-22-2016 06:07 PM

Dangerfield had some one liner that went something like
"I tell ya, my wife is a big woman. a BIG woman. She's so big I once saw her walk past a cop and he said 'you two ....break it up'"

LMAO

He's actually doing better than ever professionally.

He's going into directing and has some decent films, comedic, dramatic and documentary under his belt.

You mean he's found a way to top playing second fiddle to a talking horse in "Hot to Trot" and making weird guttural noises in Police Academy movies?

Surely, sir, you jest.

Are we sure it's the same Bobcat Goldthwait as the one back in the 1980s?

https://espngrantland.files.wordpres...goldthwait.jpg

Co-created The Man Show and directed a ton of Chappelle's Show. Done a good half dozen comedian's specials, like Chris Rock and Amy Shumer. Main director of Jimmy Kimmel Live.

Did one of Robin Williams' later big pictures World's Greatest Dad, as well as an acidic comedy God Bless America

Did an amazing documentary Call Me Lucky about comedian Barry Crimmins and his fight for justice for molested alter boys following his own molestation as a child.

The dude is quietly a powerhouse.

I don't get the whole "I don't agree with his lifestyle" schtick. Do you do this with other groups, or only gay? (truck drivers - I don't agree with their lifestyle, but...) Are you afraid people will think you are gay if you don't say this? Or are you just judgmental? Inquiring minds want to know.
