Red Lobster vs. Olive Garden

So, you're walking down the street minding your own business and I come up behind you (lets pretend I'm 6' 6" 260 and not 5' 9") and get you in a rear naked choke.

I say you have to have dinner with me and I'll take the cuffs off I bound us by the ankles with with my magical extra set of hands if you promise not to have food on lip that makes me uncomfortable and spoils an otherwise fine dining experience.

There are only two options: Red Lobster or Olive Garden. Where do we eat?

TimBone 11-18-2016 02:41 PM

Olive Garden sucks. At least with Red Lobster I can eat the cheddar biscuits.

I'm going with Red Lobster as well. I like the stuffed mushrooms.

Been forever since I've been to either one, but Red Lobster would have to be the choice... crab legs and lobster are more of a treat for me than chicken parmesan, I can do stuff like that justice at home

But I do love their chicken piccata

I'm back on the east coast dealing with family out the ass. Drinking will start early and bed will come soon until after Thanksgiving dinner. Weird post, weird mood.

Predarat 11-18-2016 02:51 PM

10-15 years ago I would say Red Lobster easily. But now their Cheddar Biscuits are as dry as croutons, and they are more stingy with them. They used to hand them out continuously. The Lobster crumbles at the touch of the fork, and the shrimp has the consistency of a rubber artificial fishing worm. And its way over priced. Olive Garden for me, Never Ending salad and breadsticks + Tour of Italy.

I haven't been to Red Lobster in prolly 5 years. I hope that's just a local franchise problem because it's looking that's where the compass is leading.

Kiimo 11-18-2016 02:56 PM

Anybody that votes Olive Garden is stupid. Like, I'm not even giving you the benefit of your opinion. You're stupid. This thread is stupid. Which do you prefer a Nissan Maxima or a 1982 Chevette.

IMHO, the shrimp has more the consistency of the more beloved rubber real fishing worm...but what do we collectively know?

if you haven't tried the Portobello ravioli at Olive Garden - it's a lovely entree.

wazu 11-18-2016 03:01 PM

Going with Olive Garden. Gonna take alcohol to get me through this meal. Red wine will make the Italianish stuff taste decent.

I don't know dude I have only been into a red lobster once and that's when the local one opened here in 1994. I was so unimpressed I have never been back.

I go to the local Olive Garden once a year. I have a family member that just loves it and that is her answer to my question, "where would you like to go to dinner on your birthday?" I cringe and go every year.

The last time I went in October it was actually pretty decent for "fast food." (Could of had something to do with the amount of wine I sucked down to kill the mental pain of being in there) I mean there are a couple of decent Italian eating establishments in town, but she just loves the Olive Garden.

With all theatbeing said, if you had a gun to my head, I'll go with the Olive Garden.

Prison Bitch 11-18-2016 03:04 PM

The only way this poll makes any sense is if you adjust it for cost.

Rain Man 11-18-2016 03:07 PM

I went to Red Lobster last year for the first time since the internet was invented, and it was really good. I was impressed.

I haven't been to Olive Garden since the Soviet Union broke up, so I don't have an opinion on them.

siberian khatru 11-18-2016 03:13 PM

I last ate at a Red Lobster four years ago. Hated it. So bad that when my next-door neighbors very graciously gave us a gift card to RL a couple of years ago for a favor we did for them ... we sold it on the Internet. Because I could not ****ing stomach even a free (or heavily discounted) meal there.

If it had been an Olive Garden gift card, I would have reluctantly used it.

kcpasco 11-18-2016 03:17 PM

They aren't that bad just way overpriced. I'll go with Olive Garden for the salad and breadsticks. I live in the PNW so I'm kind of a snob when it comes to seafood.

Abba-Dabba 11-18-2016 03:19 PM

If I am going Olive Garden I am going with an appetizer of Spicy Calabrian Chicken and entree of Ravioli di Portobello.

If I am going Red Lobster I am getting water with lemon.

gblowfish 11-18-2016 03:20 PM

Interesting question, because I've eaten at both of them in the last week.

I like Red Lobster a lot. Of course here in KC we don't get the kind of seafood like you would in Maryland, or the Gulf Coast, or Pacific Coast. But they do a decent job. I've never had trouble getting as many biscuits as I could possibly want. I love shrimp, so I can wreck some endless shrimp nights.

I took my wife to Olive Garden last night. One of our kitties passed away yesterday and she was feeling blue, so I took her out to dinner. She had the Tour of Italy. I just had spaghetti and meatballs. Reasonable, got out without drinking alcohol for the two of us for less than $40.

Of the two I like Red Lobster better. I make better meatballs at home than OG, but I like their salad.

MTG#10 11-18-2016 03:22 PM

Olive Garden used to be pretty good about 10 years ago, now its nasty. Ive never been to Red Lobster (hate seafood) so I shall abstain.

Bwana 11-18-2016 03:22 PM

Soooooo I take it you left the hills of CO for the festive season and you are back home for a few days?

threebag 11-18-2016 03:22 PM

They do have a good salad George, as long as they keep shredding the cheese.

MTG#10 11-18-2016 03:25 PM

If you're ever in Memphis stay away from the BBQ joint that obviously used to be a Red Lobster. Disgusting and dirty. Worst BBQ Ive ever had other than Heady's in Republic and Bubba's in Springfield.

I come from a pretty old school family when it comes to making sauces ("gravy" by the old guys) for pasta and don't know if I could handle jar stuff. Too used to homemade.

I've heard good things about Carrabba's which is right down the road from Red Lobster but I'm picking up the tab for 15~ people and pretty sure the kids won't mind what they shovel down their throat.

It's gonna be an Old Crow evening.

Yeah that's my philosophy as well with the Olive Garden. Not only with the salad, but with the meal. "Would you like some shredded parmesan on your meal sir?"

I always chime in with something like "you better take a deep breath and stretch out your fingers so you don't pull something because you are about to get a workout."

Used to like the Mo's at the Devil's Punchbowl for chowder and the Mo's in Newport for steamer clams. There was also this place in Lincoln City that had really good crab. Don't remember the name anymore. It was on the south end and had big round windows. I think it's gone now.

I'm not a high-end eater, though. I looked at my restaurant expenditures last year when I got my credit card summary. I eat at higher-end restaurants with my wife relatively frequently and I can appreciate higher-end food. But if I'm by myself I go slumming. It's barbecue or cheap chinese or burgers. Perhaps that's who I really am.

Pacific Oyster in Bay City. I could eat fresh oysters at every meal.

I shouldn't have said never. I've been to the cheese factory and up to Astoria but it seems like Portland funnels into the north coast like at Cannon Beach, so it was always crazy busy.

My favorite place on the coast is probably Depoe Bay.

LiveSteam 11-18-2016 04:14 PM

Sea food smells like pussy. So I'm going with Red Lobster Wings

The Iron Chief 11-18-2016 04:16 PM

Well I've now worked for Red Lobster for 25 yrs.
Managed for 15 and no matter how sick I am of looking at Lobster and Shrimp..not to mention the Biscuits I'd choose Red Lobster.

Red Lobster and OG were sister companies til two yrs ago and I've been in both kitchens many times.

There is no comparison in quality or freshness.
Olive Gardens is the fast food version of true Italian.
I married into the Mob.
My wife takes two days to make her homemade sauce not 15 minutes.

Through the yrs I've grumbled about internal changes and how we/Red Lobster get more and more pre frozen
products in but for the most part everything is still fresh and made in house.

The Biscuits that everyone drools over can be easily made at home.
I've never tried the Red Lobster box you can now purchase but I'm sure its close.
For the most part its simply Bisquick add cheddar cheese cook in a convection oven.
Now the thing thats not so easy to replicate is the garlic butter.
We use a liquid butter and our own version of garlic powder that you cant just purchase in a store.

I fully understand the Prices are Out of control!
I'm still shocked that we have regulars that are in 2 or 3 times a week.
If your going to leave with your bellies full a family of four with tip can easily hit the $150.00 mark.

KCUnited 11-18-2016 05:16 PM

I honestly can't recall having been to either. Not out of some snobbery, the opportunity just never came up, I guess. I will say that RL does a better job of advertising. The way that water flings off the crab leg when cracked does look fresh and appealing. And the way they plunge it into what looks like melted butter, splashing all about, really sends it home.

ILChief 11-18-2016 05:40 PM

Heh I knew damn well after your reaction to the mountains that the PA city life would be in the rear view mirror and you would be moving. Hope you survived the Red Slopster!

JD10367 11-18-2016 07:41 PM

Olive Garden is much better than it used to be. Red Lobster pissed me off because it took the crab & lobster fondue off the menu. But they still do a solid job on seafood (I like the crab alfredo).

However, the best part of Red Lobster is the biscuits. Now, here's a secret: they sell the biscuit mix in supermarkets. And my wife, who is by NO MEANS a cook, makes them. And she puts in a shitload more cheese than they say. And they come out ****ing awesome. Like, "ten times better than Red Lobster, she makes a dozen and we eat six each for dinner" awesome. Seriously, try them. They even give you the little dry pack of topping and you just nuke some butter in the microwave, stir in the powder, and brush the tops of the biscuits when they're done. Easy peasy.

Rasputin 11-18-2016 07:53 PM

Could open a can of Chef Boyardee raviolis and say it's from the Olive Garden and make a candle lit dinner at home.

RJ 11-18-2016 10:34 PM

Olive Garden. It's better to eat poorly prepared Italian than poorly prepared seafood. This is a ridiculously easy and obvious question. If you're going to waste your money, waste it on pasta as it's a lot cheaper and can't be ****ed up nearly as bad.

alpha_omega 11-18-2016 10:55 PM

Red Lobster.

You can't even get sausage and peppers at Olive Garden any more.
Italian restaurant failure complete.
