In 2010, Cassel was 19th in yards, 8th in TD's, 24th in yards per game and 19th in yards per attempt.

No one thought Cassel deserved it at the time, but his 2010 numbers make him look like Aaron Rodgers compared to Alex.

They don't even break it down by conference anymore. Haven't for a couple of years. They hold a "fantasy draft" to set the teams.

So someone thinks a guy who throws for 213 yards and .85 TD's per game is worthy of the Pro Bowl over like 18-20 other guys.

They don't play as AFC vs. NFC, but the players are still selected so that the two conferences are even.

From what I can tell, there are 3 starters and 3 alternates per conference, so here's Alex's competition, sorted by quarterback rating this season:

Andrew Luck
Marcus Mariota - Alternate
Derek Carr - Starter

Ryan Tannehill
Andy Dalton
(Alex Smith) - Alternate

So to me, the fact that Alex made it in as an alternate is less of an issue than Luck not making it in at all. You'll have trouble convincing me that Tannehill or Dalton are definitively better than Alex this season.

When it comes down to it, the "issue" here is just that there are only 32 QB's in the league, and 12 of them make the Pro Bowl as a starter or alternate. That's a much higher percentage than most other positions.

Pro Bowl selections have been a joke for years. There's such a thing as playing at a pro bowl level, but it doesn't correlate with making the Pro Bowl.

I know the organization said they were going to evaluate everyone but they just signed him to an extension and I don't know of any QBs on the roster to replace him.

It's a popularity contest, and generally always has been. There were a couple of years Derrick Thomas had no business making it over there, but he was always a shoe in.

Weird that Alex was on the list. While I don't think he's near the awful many here do, he sure is having a forgettable season.. other than the team-collective wins. :shrug:

I like Taylor actually. He's young, athletic, reasonably durable, talented and efficient but he sometimes passes for less yardage than Alex so there must be some obvious limitations going on for him.

I think the Bills could do worse but you can't deny that they've underperformed.

I think if I were a Bills fan I'd be ok with keeping Taylor but Ryan has to go. He's supposed to be a defensive guru and that defense has gone to shit.

The Chiefs have truly competed for the SB once since 1970

This season isn't over. We have the 3rd best record in the AFC. We can still win the division and get 2nd seed. We have beaten several probably playoff teams on the road this season. We are a SB contender RIGHT NOW, by any reasonable definition of the word.
