Pre-Combine 2017 Chiefs Mock Draft
It's that time of the year, folks. Draft season. I love it almost as much as the regular season, and this will be my first swing at this year's Chiefs mock. Like any pre-combine mock, it will likely look a lot different by late April. I base a lot of this off of needs, but keep in mind these are mostly players I would want as well personally.... with that, let's mock.
1st Round TRADE! Chiefs send R1(27), R3(104), and R6(216) to Miami for the 22nd pick. The Pick: Patrick Mahomes II, QB, Texas Tech Here I project that the Chiefs will see the board unfold and leap in front of Houston and the Giants to pick 22nd as both teams could potentially draft QBs. This board and the majority of fans out there love Mahomes' potential. His raw talent gives him an elite ceiling, but he is a far from finished product. Needing to go somewhere to sit for a season, Andy Reid finally makes the move to get the chess piece to Derek Carr in Oakland for the next decade plus. The fan base rejoices. 2nd Round Pick 59: Jarrad Davis, ILB, Florida Davis was thought to be a late 1st round prospect early on, but has slipped a bit as of late. If the Chiefs are able to get him at 59, it would be a great get with potential to become a key piece in the middle of the defense in the post-DJ era. 3rd Round Pick 91: Jordan Willis, OLB, Kansas State One of those that tore up the Senior Bowl, which Dorsey and Reid typically seem to like. Could be great insurance for Houston and Ford as Hali continues to fade into retirement. 4th Round Pick 132: Vincent Taylor, DE, Oklahoma State Taylor would not be a starter day one, but would come in with the potential to become one if and when the Chiefs move on from Jaye Howard past 2017. The DL will need a new body or two with Poe likely on the way out this offseason. 5th Round TRADE! Chiefs send R5(170) and a 2018 R4 pick to Philadelphia for R5(158). The Pick: Jake Butt, TE, Michigan In one of the deepest and best TE classes ever, Andy Reid gets a solid backup and complement to Travis Kelce. He has to trade up to do so however. Butt leaps Harris on the depth chart once he knows the playbook. Pick 180: Avery Gennesy, Guard/Tackle, Texas A&M Staying true to recent drafts, Dorsey and Reid grab a late round guard with potential to be a starter one day or a serviceable backup. 6th Round Pick 218: Chad Hansen, WR, California Highly productive wideout in college with smarts and ability. If he's there, Dorsey can't pass on him. 7th Round Pick 245: Demetrious Cox, CB/S, Michigan State KC grabs some potential depth in the secondary, taking Cox who is long and tall at 6'1", but could slip late due to an off the field issue in November. |
I would be happy.
They have almost too many picks they have to trade up. |
I will be surprised if Willis makes it to the 3rd round.
|
Considering RB is a strength in this draft, Chiefs should stay put/trade down to pick up Jarrad Davis to fill the ILB spot with their first pick. That kid will be a game changer for this defense. Strong, smart, and fast
|
That would be a fantastic draft.
Historically fantastic for the chiefs. |
I'm a bit surprised that there's not more discussion on the lack of running game. Ware and West stepped up after JC went down and then production went flat. RB seems to be a bigger need, to help Smith out as I don't see him going anywhere next season.
|
Reason that I didn't have us picking a RB: I have a feeling that Charles is going to take an incentive rich pay cut. I really do. Whether it's the right or wrong move, that's what I'm expecting.
|
I like the way you think, I was hoping for the same.
|
RB's are dime a dozen, aren't they? I like this mock draft.
|
Love it, but there's no way I see Davis lasting until our late 2nd

I really don't think the Chiefs need to move up for a QB. Chances are looking pretty damn good, right now at least, that either Kizer or Mahomes falls to them and I think Andy would be cool and good with either one of them.
Keep the picks and add competition allover the roster. |
even tho puff videos are there on the top prospects, we don't see the negatives. that said, i watched a more recent 2016 vid of mahomes, and was impressed that he scrambled to stretch plays, and put the ball where a receiver could 'make a play'.
if he falls. without fail, take him :D |
The only thing better than a draft with Cox and Butt would be a draft with Bossom and Derrier!

Willis would also fill what seems to be a constant each year for Dorsey, drafting a replacement for a player who will be a FA the next year. In this case (I could be wrong here) it would be a replacement for Ford who I am pretty sure is on the last year of his rookie contract this year.
