Eric Berry signs 6-year, $78m extension
I completely ****ed up in trying to merge the other two threads. I'll hang my head in shame. In the meantime, here's a new thread.
<blockquote class="twitter-tweet" data-lang="en"><p lang="en" dir="ltr">Chiefs gave S Eric Berry a six-year, $78 million deal that includes $40 million guaranteed and a $20 mil signing bonus, per source.</p>— Adam Schefter (@AdamSchefter) <a href="https://twitter.com/AdamSchefter/status/836644811973230592">February 28, 2017</a></blockquote> <script async src="//platform.twitter.com/widgets.js" charset="utf-8"></script> |

Recap of other thread:
Hooray. Hope he and Houston stay healthy cause they have a lot of money wrapped up in those two. |
Like the dude at the Oscars, my explanation doesn't make it better, but for what it's worth...
I merged the two threads, but KnowMo's post was the first one, so he was retained as the OP. I tried to delete that post so that the next one in line would become the OP, but apparently our hack to keep the first post on every page isn't quite right, and instead of clicking on the button to delete the first post, I ended up clicking on the button to delete the whole thread. :sulk: |
You erased the thread like Berry erases redzone opportunities.

Sooo, do we float something toward Poe? I don't like his wonky back or that other teams ran all over him last season, but at least throw out a number?!?

Still had the same screen up on my phone so here's a copy/paste of my clearly outstanding contribution to Pug's thread:
Bonus can only spread over 5 years so that puts $4 mil/season in cap. Maybe 5/$60 in 'real' money? 17 - $1 million guaranteed (5 mil cap hit) 18- $7 million guaranteed (11 mil hit) 19 - $8 million gtd (12 mil hit) 20 - $11 partially gtd ($15 mil hit, $4 mil gtd) 21 - $13 (17 mil hit w/ $4 mil penalty if cut) 22 - $18 (no cap penalty to cut outright) Obviously a wild-ass guess but that would be 4/$47 at that point. |

$13+ million for an 'anchor' who didn't actually do much to stop the run nor have his pass-rush skills ever come together. The back made him a physically impressive JAG. That or his development just never did what we'd hoped and teams have adjusted. Maybe he makes a difference in gameplanning that we just don't see but I tell ya, it's not as thought he run game can get much worse. We were selling out to stop the run by the end of the year and putting our guys in real tough spots over the middle. If they offer him the tag, he'll sign it that day and that will be the starting point for discussions. I don't think the market will support that kind of scratch for him and woe be the team that pays it to him. We rode that guy like a rented mule; I worry that we've seen the best he has to give. |
I honestly don't think I could have rooted for the Chiefs quite as much as I have knowing they let Berry walk after everything he's been through with the team.
Plus, he's an OK player, I guess. |

whoever says now Clark is cheap is a just a flat out liar |
Not sure having the NFL's highest paid safety and overpaying an average guard are steps to becoming a Super Bowl team.

I'll say it again here, because either I'm confused or a few others are:
This should work out to around a $16 million cap hit per season on average. Remains to be seen whether the deal will be worth it or not but I think he can be effective for the length of the contract. |

So really this deal is 4/47 with chiefs having plenty of leverage and flexibility in the 2021 season.

Eric Berry signs 6-year, $78m extension
Quote:
That's where either I or a few of you guys are confused.. As far as I'm aware, when figuring out the CAP HIT, you have to include the signing bonus, which is generally stretched out over the length of the contract. So we'd essentially be adding an additional $3+ million per season ($20m divided by 6 years) to the $13m salary. |

The signing bonus is part of the $78m. |
Love me some Eric Berry
|
Nice!! :thumb:

Quote:
Guess I was the one confused then. That's awesome. $13m cap hit isn't too bad. |
Quote:
The $78 million includes the bonus. It's $58 million in salary + $20 million signing bonus. You're double counting the signing bonus - no contracts are ever announced like that. |
Quote:
|
yea Clark literally cut a fat check when that contract was signed today.
This agent is cleaning Clarks pockets Berry, LDT, Spiller |

Were they at one point in time? I feel like I'd have gotten that from somewhere. |

Found my proposal in Boss Chiefs thread:
Quote:
Looks like I got the signing bonus right at $20 million. I put the guarantee lower (I didn't guarantee as much salary as this deal likely will), but I'm betting in the end my 5/$60 million ends up really really close to what he actually sees in the first 5 years of this deal and I think the 6th year allows some salary spread that makes it possible that my 4/$46 prediction also ends up pretty close to balls on. |

I wonder who is on the hook for the insurance policy
|
Not sure this was the right move. I will say we can trust him with the big contract to not mail it in.
I hope. |
That ****ing sucks. We paid that much for a guy who doesn't even sell that many jerseys?!
|
The contract works in the sense that after this season we are offloading other big contracts including DJ, tamba, and Smith.
|
Sweet. We got him for a reasonable deal!

Here's hoping he can stay healthy better than Justin Houston!
|
What our estimated cap space now?
|
The big deals aren't a big deal if our qb is making peanuts in a year or two
|

He's only making 50% more than Kam Chancellor will make next season. NBD.
|
Quote:
How much more is Alex making than Carr? |
Quote:

Let me know when Chancellor has to cover like Earl Thomas deep.
|
Did we literally have to cut Charles in order to sign this deal?

2) Earl Thomas is in the same boat as Berry and he'll make 33% less than Berry the next two seasons despite being a better player |
I'm the ass clown. ROFL

Let me know when Kam is 1st team all pro. Berry has done it multiple times including last year.

And there goes Sauto...AGAIN...messing with people's settings.

If ESPN put up a national poll or expert committee poll I guarantee you Kam Chancellor or Earl Thomas would haul in at least twice the votes Berry does. The people on here who don't watch football outside of KC continue to show their ignorance.

How sad is Tigger's life that he has to come to a message board to quantify and validate himself with quotes and praises.

Like I've stated before.
Tell me what Tigger donates and I'll double it......if he's gone. |

Tigger is obviously stirring the pot, but hey. Let's be honest about the distance between Berry's contract and that of the next best/next highest paid safety. It's a significant point.

Yeah....no one knows who Eric Berry is. There are all kinds of All-Pro safeties that win comeback player of the year after beating cancer. Shit happens all of the time.

dude is just mad that the Chiefs are one of the few franchises were their best player on their roster is a positional player like safety and not QB
