Browns Trade OL Cam Erving To Chiefs

For a 2018 5th Round pick.

okiedokieokoye 08-30-2017 11:51 AM

Erving is set to make just under $1.3 million this year and is signed for just over $1.7 million next year on a rookie deal that also includes a team option for the 2019 season.

Marcellus 08-30-2017 11:52 AM

Dude....Veach. Holy shit.

okiedokieokoye 08-30-2017 11:54 AM

I think Veach realized that our OL depth was a pretty glaring weakness during these preseason games.

Veach picking up all the dudes he scouted and wished we drafted I guess.

okiedokieokoye 08-30-2017 11:56 AM

Scouting report from Terez: 1. Cameron Erving, 6-5, 313, Florida State

Bio: Three-year starter who played in 55 career games. Turns 23 this year. 34 1/8-inch arms. 10 3/8-inch hands. 5.15 40-yard dash. 30 bench reps. 30.5-inch vertical. 112-inch broad jump. 7.48 3-cone drill. 4.63 20-yard shuttle.

Evaluation: Very long for a center. Has good bend. Can mirror pass rushers with good feet. Converted tackle. Can get to the second level. Can make reach blocks and is big and athletic enough to turn and wall a guy off. Has a big base, can anchor decently in pass pro. Only OK athleticism on screens. Is not a nasty guy but generally gets the job done and can generate movement at the point of attack in the running game. Not sure how aware he is on stunts at center. Good get off at the snap. Flexible enough to get low in his stance in pass pro. Aware as a run blocker; on zone runs he’ll peel off to pick up blitzing backer to create gaps. Wish he showed more pop/effort at the second level and in space. Wish he showed more of a mean streak but will protect his guy - ran over to clean the pile off a gang tackle vs Oregon and was first OL there. Has a powerful punch — shoves guys to the ground a lot. Needs to keep his feet moving in pass pro. Long arms could be an issue in the trenches — squatty guys could get into his body quicker — but has more than enough ability to play guard if center doesn’t work out.

Eh, he's probably really shitty. He's like Haden - people don't seem to be acknowledging how truly terrible he's been the last 2 years.

But the bar he needs to clear is Jah Reid and Jah Reid is ****ing awful. He can probably manage that.

19th overall pick in 2015.

okiedokieokoye 08-30-2017 11:58 AM

Thoughts about this though?

Chiefs have traded away their 1st (Mahomes), 5th (Erving) and 7th (Acker) picks in 2018 draft.

The Browns have been among the best in football at developing OL over the last several years.

His coaching in Cleveland has been fine. He's probably just bad.

All good trades considering what they received in return. 5th and 7th round picks are negligible. Only way any of this goes south is if Mahomes doesn't pan out, which is doubtful barring a catastrophic injury.

Getting a former 1st round, versatile talent for what should be a late 5th is great value.

I doubt that the Chiefs could have drafted an offensive lineman with his ceiling in the late 5th.

Kiimo 08-30-2017 12:02 PM

This guy only played two years on offensive line. He might have been bad but is nowhere near his ceiling yet.

#Chiefs take on the roughly $3 million still guaranteed on Erving's contract over next 2 years. #Browns' new regime gains more flexibility.

It must suck to watch KC land a top 20 draft pick for a future fifth, while Elway just trades swigs off a bottle of Gordon's gin with the Bowlens.

Welcome to last place.

I agree - I suggested am Erving trade in the draft forum yesterday specifically to get rid of Nah Reid. This is a good trade provided that it costs Reid his job and not Witzmann.

But folks are going a wee crazy here. A 5th is about right for a swing tackle/backup interior lineman. This isn't the guy that was a 1st rounder when Direkshun foolishly spent months jerking off to him.

He's a below average NFL player with a cheap contract and some versatility. A 5th is fair. This is a nominal asset spent to address the margins of the roster and a position of some need. It's not a heist - it's just a move that you should probably expect of a solid GM.

We need "milkman"'s take on him since he is our NFL o-lineman specialist.:thumb:

The jury is still out on him. He's played for two years with the worst coaching in the NFL. A 5th is a steal for what could still be a really good player. There was a reason he was that high of a pick, and that reason hasn't been disproven yet.

He could absolutely suck. But a 5th is a cheap, cheap, cheap price to pay for a guy who could still turn into a starter and good player - at a position of DIRE need for us, as well.

Hes Jonathan Baldwin. His draft status just doesn't matter that much right now. Besides, weren't you on the other side of this conversation with me yesterday?

I'm glad we got him but folks are way overselling him and are way too fired up. I'd bet he's out of football in 2 years. A 5th for that gamble is fine but not world altering.

They are "decent" not "very good" at this point at least in the run game so far this pre-season, what I am watching for once the season starts will be the pass blocking. This must improve if Alex supposedly gets more aggressive downfield this season. Otherwise it will be 'primary' then to check down'.

Chiefs using future draft picks to build present roster- Patrick Mahomes, Reggie Ragland, Cam Erving.

The Franchise 08-30-2017 12:14 PM

If the Chiefs are smart.....they take Erving and decide on one ****ing position for him. Build him up as a swing tackle. The Browns kind of ****ed themselves by moving him around a bunch.
