Gaines to IR

Chiefs placed CB Phillip Gaines on injured reserve with an elbow injury, ending his season.
Gaines opened the year as the Chiefs' slot corner but was benched around midseason after getting roasted every week in coverage. He saw extended reps in the Week 17 finale against Denver and was injured then.

Imagine that.

Rausch 01-03-2018 10:33 AM

He has not played well this year but less depth right now is not good...

Pasta Little Brioni 01-03-2018 10:36 AM

CP is always classy.

lcarus 01-03-2018 10:39 AM

Gaines had a pretty nice tackle in that Denver game. Also had a nice 3rd down coverage that I thought was pass interference without question, but they didn't call it so whatever.

siberian khatru 01-03-2018 10:39 AM

So we lost how many players to injury in that Denver game? Four?

Easy 6 01-03-2018 10:40 AM

The kid has had some tough breaks this year, but at his best you get that play early on against Denver where he was so far up the receivers ass that some thought he should've been flagged... yet he wasnt flagged, he was just that tight on his man

I doubt he'll ever be a pick machine, but the coverage ability is definitely there

jjchieffan 01-03-2018 10:41 AM

Who's available to take his roster spot?

Danguardace 01-03-2018 10:41 AM

Mitchell Acker Peters Revis Reaser and Nelson

Doesn't feel like much of a hit

If they're just looking to bring up someone that can play CB? Will Redmond is on our practice squad right now.

His physical ability is there. I'll argue that until the day ends.

His ability to "sense" the play or have natural instincts isn't.

Probably why Reid decided to sit so many players. Denver and Pittsburgh are some trash teams who seem to always hurt people.

I've only seen Reaser play a few snaps, but I have difficulty thinking he's a clear step down from Gaines. And at the very least, Reaser is an unknown to opposing QBs rather than the easy target Gaines has been time and time again.

I only remember one play from Reaser. Pass over the top to the end zone. He turned his head. Aaaaand that's all I needed. I'm sold.

Playing the ball is probably something that can be improved over time, but yeah as your first sentence alludes to, and what everyone noticed about him early on, is that he can be extremely sticky... he can excel with the trail technique

Often times, just being glued to the receivers hip is its own pass defense

Ironically Gaines's most valuable play as a member of the Chiefs may have been in the Denver game last year when he completely whiffed on coverage late in the game (he predictably lost complete awareness of where the ball was). That allowed Denver a quick, long TD that gave us just enough time on the clock to drive down and tie it.

So don't act like a CB who turns his head is always a good thing.

William Bartee.

I won't be surprised to see multiple picks on Saturday from the Chiefs defense.

Mariota's been pretty awful this season with 14 TD's and 15 INT's.

Good luck to the Chiefs in the playoffs. All I'm going to say is that Phillip worked hard for the Chiefs for 4 years. And the Chiefs have taken care of him as well. They obviously saw something in him or he wouldn't have been around so long. I've personally watched him from the time he played flag to now. This has been his dream his whole life. When he got drafted by the Chiefs, he looked at me and said, I will give my all to the Chiefs. And he has. He has had some tough breaks. But i know in my heart that he will be successful in the NFL because one thing I know is that I didn't raise a quitter. My son is a wonderful person and when I see so called fans saying they are glad he is hurt or they wish he would off himself, I have to wonder how these people where raised. God bless you all. I know he has disappointed some of you and there are others that hate him but so be it. Do any of you have sons that wanted to play professional sports and didn't make it? Well my son did. God bless you all and GO Chiefs!

You have to have SOME KIND of spacial awareness to be 'covering' anyone. Otherwise you are just running.

Gaines just runs.

Sorry Mom. I'm sure your son is swell and bought you a lot of pretties with his NFL salary. I've paid too much hard earned money over the years to pay your son's salary. We can't have a playoff game snatched from us by the zebras because a second string DB couldn't learn to turn his head around on an end zone fade pattern. 23 had a target on his back every time he stepped on the field. Ask William Bartee what happens to an NFL corner who can't learn to turn around and defend a pass. They wind up an Ex-NFL corner in a big hurry. I'm sure he'll have a lucrative career in Cleveland or Chicago or somewhere like that where losing is endemic. Can't have it here. Just can't have it.

Easy 6 01-03-2018 04:01 PM

IMO its pretty damn cool for his mom to put herself out there like this, it takes guts, and she has handled it with class

I bet a great many of you wouldn't handle someone slamming your kid on a message board that well... good luck to you and Phil, mom... he'll land on another team, and he might even be back in KC again

Coach 01-03-2018 04:04 PM

Addition by subtraction.

Gaines is a good kid, but unfortunately has never shown anything relevant while he was on the field. I wish him luck next year, preferably at a different team.

Hey Ms. Gaines. Thank you for visiting us and telling us these awesome little nuggets.

I followed Phillip at Rice. I knew the Chiefs were going to draft him. He played great press man coverage and had outstanding recovery speed. The Chiefs were deep at CB, though, and he got hurt.

By the time he was healthy — I don’t know. I knew he was a great competitor but the Chiefs played more off man and more zone. Threw Phillip in the slot, and he struggled.

He was by all accounts an outstanding teammate. He deserves another shot in the NFL, maybe even in KC. He’ll definitely have suitors. The league is starved for corners.

God bless!

If you truly are related to him, i am happy for both you and your son to have a chance to live the NFL dream. Anyone wishing death or injury is being an ass, i highly doubt they really mean that anyway.

You have to understand though that as fans, we have little emotional attachment to players that don't produce well. We react to results.

Quite frankly, Gaines may find better success elsewhere in a scheme that doesn't require so much single man coverage. There was a point in which i felt bad for the guy, because it was apparent that the game plan for teams going in was to pick on him.

No one should be humiliated on national television, and it got so bad that there must've been hundreds if thousands of people cursing his name. That would suck for anyone. Best of luck to you and yours wherever Gaines lands next.

Fans watch sports with a sense of detachment from the reality of the players being people. I think most of us who rip on players aren't really going after them as people, and only mean it in the sports universe.

Hell, even players do the same to each other on the field of play. Players do it to officials, both pro and amateur. Perhaps even Gaines has done it in his lifetime. As it has been mentioned, it's probably best for family to not be on a board like this. While most of us would deep down wish Gaines well as a person, it's not going to be easy to see passed that reading our opinion of how he played.

Being poor at your job doesn't make you a bad person. Official, player, coach, teacher, cashier, ect.

Phillip Gaines had good ball skills and looked on track to be a solid starter and it seems like things unraveled when he tore his ACL.

I had the same gut feeling the 'ol vet will make a big play as well.

Yes, but less is actually more in this case when you are talking Gaines. I'm just so glad it wasn't a hangnail that IR'd him.

Guy is simply soft and plays like Burntee of the past.

I doubt he'll ever be a pick machine, but the coverage ability is definitely there

If he’d just learn to look for the ball he wouldn’t get near as many flags. He’s athletic as hell. Still, I never like to see injuries....

His first few years had begun to impress even his most vocal current detractors

Injuries kept derailing him, and yet he just kept coming back... but I'm not sure he was 100% early on this year, didn't look like himself at all

He looked back against Denver IMO, totally mirroring his guy... then ****ed up his elbow going hard for the arm tackle

The NFL is hard knock life, if it isn't KC... some other team will covet how sticky he can be

Relax George.

It’s sometimes easy to forget these kids are someone’s sons, brothers, cousins, etc.

It’s only a game. No one has forced you to give so much of your hard earned money to the Chiefs

10 Things I Hate about Phillip Gaines?

Aw, shit. Sorry, Philip Gaines' mom.

You have to understand the nature of this board, and really the internet itself. There's no excuse for some of the things said about your son but I'm sorry you had to read it all.

Word to the wise, there's nothing here for you but pain.

Best of luck to you and your son.

When's the last time a Chiefs player has torn their ACL and came back the same?
