Alex Smith breaks the bank.

Is this guy any good? Maybe KC should bring him in for a look if Mahomes doesn't work out: Per SI.COM

Washington Redskins quarterback Alex Smith signed a four-year, $94 million extension with the team last week, reports NFL.com.

Smith will make $40 million this upcoming season, which includes a $27 million signing bonus, according to the report.

The deal also includes $71 million in guarantees for injury, meaning Smith is under contract for five years and $111 million.

Smith made $10.8 million in base salary last season.

He was traded in January for cornerback Kendall Fuller and a 2018 third-round draft pick.

The 33-year-old Smith led the NFL in passer rating (104.7) this season and set career-highs in passing yards (4,042) and touchdowns (26) while throwing just five interceptions.

In 12 seasons, Smith has a 88-62-1 record as a starting quarterback.

Look at those greenbacks, he must be so awesome that anyone can vindicate how badass he is because of his signing bonus and overall take. I repeat ANYONE can make the case how excellent Alex is as a player and a person./sarcasm

TomBarndtsTwin 03-19-2018 08:05 AM

Good for him. Wish him all the best.

(Just thankful the Chiefs weren’t the ones to hand out this silly contract. Not that there was any chance of that, but still. I would have given up on them forever. Sorry, Washington fans. I feel bad for y’all)

ChiliConCarnage 03-19-2018 08:08 AM

I didn't think they'd lock him up for the whole deal but he's pretty expensive to cut until the final season. Even that final season he's still a 7 million dead cap hit

Gotta give it to you, you have a knack for karma.

Bringing Carson Palmer into the conversation when we have a rookie QB. Carson Palmer whose huge draft promise was squandered by a devastating fluke injury right when he was about to turn a franchise's playoff fortunes around.

Great job!!

Add Sam Bradford to that list, and it goes to something like $415M and 3 playoff wins.

Every team is realizing that in 2018, you cant win a Super Bowl without a top shelf, or at least one playing like one at the time QB. They are overpaying big time to keep from being left out.

Smith gets $111 million? What does that make Mahomes worth in 2022?

Rich, VERY Rich hopefully

Halfcan 03-19-2018 08:50 AM

I think this is the best move Veech has made so far. Five more years of Smith and a cap eating contract like that would have doomed this team and extended the Chief's playoff futility.

we traded alex smith, marcus peters, 6th round (#209)

for

kendell fuller, 3rd round (#78), 4th round (#124), LA Rams 2019 2nd round (#56 overall, 24th in 2nd round as of 2018 slotting, guessing similar or a bit lower next yr)

i need to look at them together or else i still get ticked off we bailed on peters too early for too little

in total, i still see a win for these trades

Buns 03-19-2018 09:29 AM

Patrick Mahomes II will resign with the Chiefs, 6 years, $300 Million guaranteed. The money won't matter; he'll already have the keys to the city. There will be streets named after him before he's thirty.

I hope, anyways.

The QB market is insane. Here are the top 5 cash earning QB's for 2018.

1. Garappolo $42.6M
2. Smith $40M
3. Brees $27M
4. Cousins $26M
5. Carr $22.5M

No, No, No. Mahomes will be like Brady in that he will be very happy with being the 15th to 10th highest paid QB so that we can keep the team stocked with talent so we can continue to win SB after SB.

So, by paying him another 100 million, i guess the redskins expect to win 2 playoff games in the next 5 years?

Actually, Smith is a loser. The Chiefs did a WONDERFUL job in jacking his value up by surrounding him with elite talent at two positions and above average talent at one. Not to mention a perfectly serviceable O-line that any QB devoid of a SCREAMING case of the shartpants could use to positive effect.
Without these elements, Alex Smith will most assuredly lose.

A lot.

Fish 08-16-2018 08:31 PM

Alex Smith sucks...

Quote:

Why Your Team Sucks 2018: Washington Redskins

[...]

Your quarterback: The Skins didn’t want to pay Kirk Cousins $84 million guaranteed, so here’s what they did instead: they traded a third-round pick and promising cornerback Kendall Fuller to Kansas City in exchange for a quarterback who is five years older than Cousins, averages nearly 60 fewer yards per game, and averages nearly a full yard less per attempt. Then they gave THAT guy $71 million guaranteed.

There are people here who think that was smart. I’m not even kidding. You should hear Skins fans here talking themselves into Alex Smith. Alex Smith is a very nice fellow who needs to be surrounded by Pro Bowlers and coached by a play-calling savant in order to average more than 150 yards a game. The Chiefs got a career year out of him last season and still couldn’t be bothered to keep him around. He’s authored not one, but two of the worst postseason collapses in HISTORY.

And yet Skins fans will gladly devour the sales job on him. They’re like, “Oh wow, we’ve finally moved on from Kirk Cousins’s contract drama. We’ve finally got stability.” NO! NO NO NO NO NO NO YOU ****ING MORONS. Stability just walked out the ****ing door! This is the instability! When you draft a franchise QB and kill him, and then you luck into a SECOND franchise QB to take his place, and then you freeze out that second franchise QB because he wanted to be paid appropriately, that isn’t ****ing stable. Kirk Cousins somehow flourished with this team, made a boatload of money, and yet he couldn’t WAIT to leave town. If you wanna blame Kirk Cousins for that, well then you’re stupid enough to work for this organization.

Alex Smith isn’t the solution. He is yet another symptom of a disease that has ravaged this organization throughout the entire 21st century. All they do is re-package one bad lie after another. It would be ****ing sickening if it didn’t result in hilarious, abject failure year after year after year. At least when Trump lies, it works for him. Look at this shit:

https://i.imgur.com/gt6kAUl.png

Vibe, my ass. “There’s a general sense of peace and harmony now that we get to openly shade our old quarterback like a bunch of ****ing weirdos.” The Skins always want you to think it’s gonna be different this time around. Look up at the half-pint dictator in the luxury box and the illusion is shattered within seconds. If you guys can talk yourselves into Alex Smith, you should save that energy to talk yourself into something more productive, like finding a better job.
