Movie's finally filming this fall. No, seriously. They're actually doing it after talking about it for two years.

that series was definitely left hanging. No attempt to even close out anything. I guess the show runners and cast didn’t know they were being shut down. Glad to see what happened next.

Deadwood is a show I wish I could watch for the first time.

One thing to enrich your experience is to bone up on the actual history of the town.

The show is definitely stylized and a lot of the detail is created for narrative purposes. But still, an amazing amount of the detail hews remarkably close to history. A lot of what you watch, you say 'wow, can you imagine if that really happened.' And then you see that, in broad strokes, a lot of it actually did.

And it really delivers some strong and salient messages about what it means to live in a society. We quibble to this day about things like rules, regulations, taxes, decency, community, diversity, etc. And these people were bringing it to life on the fly with absolutely [or nearly] no rules to constrain them. You really get a sense of what compacts must be present to exist and thrive, and what are superfluous or luxurious.

One of my favorite parts of the show was the (albeit brief) friendship that formed between Bullock and Hickok. Unfortunately, that part was pure Hollywood. IIRC Hickok was killed the day Bullock and Starr arrived - it is unlikely that they ever even saw each other, let alone spoke.

Hated how it suddenly died on the vine like that, it was just getting warmed up

To me, it was right up there with HBOs best like GoT or Sopranos

This convinces me that it is time to pull out the box set and revisit this series again.

BigRedChief 11-05-2018 09:33 PM

Here’s the most up-to-date information about the long-awaited Deadwood film, based on the Golden Globe and Emmy-winning series .

What’s it about?
The movie comes nearly 13 years after the drama concluded in 2006 and follows the 10-year reunion of the camp to celebrate South Dakota's statehood. Former rivalries are reignited, alliances are tested and old wounds are reopened, as all are left to navigate the inevitable changes that modernity and time have wrought.

When will it premiere?
The film is set to premiere in 2019 on HBO, HBO NOW, HBO GO and HBO On Demand.

Who’s in it?
Returning to Deadwood are Ian McShane (Ray Donovan, American Gods) as the foul-mouthed saloon owner Al Swearengen; Timothy Olyphant (Justified, Santa Clara Diet) as Deadwood sheriff Seth Bullock; Molly Parker (House of Cards) as the widowed Alma Ellsworth; Paula Malcomson at Trixie; John Hawkes as Sol Starr; Anna Gunn (Breaking Bad) as Mrs. Bullock; Dayton Callie as Charlie Utter; Brad Dourif as Doc Cochran; and Robin Weigert (Big Little Lies) as Calamity Jane Canary; William Sanderson as E.B. Farnum; Kim Dickens as Joanie Stubbs; and Gerald McRaney as George Hearst.

The film will also feature new cast member Jade Pettyjohn as Caroline.

Deadwood has to be one of the more over-hyped series in modern history....

I remember when it was airing...and people saying it was better than The Wire. I tried to watch it back then and lost interest...

I recently tried to watch it again with the movie coming out... and thought some of the acting/writing was pretty bad. Who ever played Bullock is a terrible actor...it was decent until Wild Bill died.

Anyway...from shows of that period...The Wire destroyed it....it's not close.

If that's the guy...he sucked in Deadwood. His character in that show was flat and stilted...he didn't convince me. Had they chosen someone else...it would have made the show better. It felt almost soap-opera level...

Compare him to Omar or Stringer Bell from the Wire...

Oh shit...he's the guy in that California Gore Comedy....he's better in that role...submissive, helper-dad.

The Wild West vs modern day, why even bother comparing the two?

Deadwood was as accurate to its time and place as anything ever made

To each, his own...the scumbag bar owner was solid...the guy who's face they use as it's trademark.

The other actor..who owned the rival brothel was weak too...

It just wasn't that good...the slimy mayor was good...I thought Utter was decent too. The drunk woman who said **** every other word was over acted and seemed forced. The doctor character was decent..

Meh..it's over-rated. It wasn't horrible...but I haven't been compelled to finish it. I just quit caring...like with Walking Dead. For a series that got such high rankings...I should be interested enough to finish it once...after trying twice.

Uh, that was intentional. Bullock was written as a ridged character and Olyphant absolutely nailed it. It’s not surprising you don’t like the show, you cannot even pick up on its basic constructs.

No...I didn't like it because it wasn't good. Then again Ingmar Bergman is a favorite director...so I'm used to existential dialogue and deeper themes...

Like I said, to each his own but dont pretend that I dont understand character constructs...he was just a shit actor that rivaled daytime television.

I'm not trying to be a hater for the sake of stirring shit...I wanted to like it. Its why I gave it another shot after a decade. I was wondering if I missed something that created such a loyal following. I made it further than the first try...around 3 episodes in of season 2. It just lost my attention...again. Just watched. If this needs spoiler tags at this point; why the **** you in here if you haven’t seen it yet? Besides. I don’t think I know how to do that anyways.

Overall, nice to have some closure. Fun watching all the characters again, bit of nostalgia. So overall, I like the movie, and like they did it.

But, like GOT and other recent movie/show/story plots; I’m about god damn sick of “bittersweet” endings. I already know real life sucks sometimes, I don’t need my entertainment to drive that melancholy mantra of a nail in the already bored out hole in my head.

Jon snow should’ve killed the night king and taken the throne with or without Dany, and Al Swearengen should’ve lopped off George Hurst’s nutsack. There was way too much bitter and not enough sweet to this cocksucking show ending.

I did like that Jane finally sacked up, both by going after Stubbs and by using her ****ing gun at the right time......

Was the movie good for you series watchers?

Randallflagg 06-21-2019 08:30 PM

Yeah - I loved the series and it pissed me off when they abruptly ended it. I was glad as hell that they finished it off in fine fashion after these years.

If you've never watched the entire run, I highly recommend it. Ian McShane is well worth the price of admission. The dialogue takes a little getting used to (ala old world) but damn they delivered it well.

Pretty sure that one on the right is Garrett Dillahunt, who famously played two different key parts in the original Deadwood. He first played Jack McCall, who killed Wild Bill Hicock, then came back as bad guy Francis Walcott. He's presently on Fear the Walking Dead where he worked with 'Joanie Stubbs' until she was written out.

I imagine they gave him an extra role as an Easter Egg.

Deadwood 1st season: Greatness
2nd season: Very good
3rd season: I liked the first two seasons, so I guess I should finish this

Movie: Seems like main a plot that would have carried out over a season, but they cut out any side-stories and boiled it down to 2 hours.
Good, not great--about what I'd expect from a series-turned-movie. People always have way too high expectations for these things. Fun to see pretty much all the old characters, even some that appeared only occasionally.

It's definitely him. I had to pause and rewind at that moment. Confirmed via IMDB.

Yep! I liked the way the did that. Garret Dilahunt played several roles during the series, it was only fitting that they bring him back for the last hurrah also. :thumb:

I watched it last night. I have never seen the series. Not that I didn't want to, I just never wanted to pay for a subscription to HBO. I thought the movie was decent. It is a little odd how everyone cusses a lot. That just doesn't seem right to me. And the dialogue was a little strange at times. But overall, I enjoyed it.

Yeah, for the person who hasn't watched the series it is a tad confusing. Milch wrote the script to mimic an early era victorian Shakespeare play (sort of). I don't care for the constant cursing - bit honestly, I don't believe it would have been as powerful without it.

What I did, however like, was that the show allowed the characters to "let everything go" and act. Ian McShane (in my opinion) is one of the finest Actors alive today and "Deadwood" proves it. It is rough, crude and sometimes hilarious....I would highly encourage you to purchase the series and watch it from the beginning.

The language is a bit stilted and blue, but Milch justifies it, or at least tries, historically.

In frontier [lawless] lands, with tons of strangers and riches at stake, your stock in trade was your vocabulary. People trended to the flowery to imbue themselves with a sense of education and sophistication, and people trended to the blue to imbue themselves with a sense of badassery.

Basically, the language of Deadwood was how potentially hostile strangers established quickly that they are smart and tough.

Also, the guttural nature of cursing was considered effective in managing livestock. ie, if you were manning a wagon train, or finagling some draft horses, 'stop mother****er' and a few snaps of the reins got more results than a gentle whickering and gentle shake.

that's due to the short vowel sounds. that's low frequency noise that stands out from the high frequency din of a bustling town, a herd on the move, or a Lakota war party screaming.

We never saw the HBO series and just started watching it this weekend on a suggestion.

I am also halfway through Red Dead 2 on PS4 so this is all very awesome at once.

I just started watching it because it popped up on my 'recommended Prime' queue.

Man...I'm just not a Timothy Olyphant guy. I've had friends swear that I need to watch Justified and I just couldn't get past Olyphant.

And I'm not sure I'm gonna be able to stick with Deadwood either. It just seems like he's overacting even when he's trying to be understated. I can't really tell you what it is about him that I don't like, but I tend to think actors work best when you forget they're acting. And for whatever reason, Olyphant ALWAYS looks like he's acting to me.

And frankly, Keith Carradine is kinda the same way for me. Now knowing a bit about the history here, I suspect that won't be a problem for too terribly long. But Carradine essentially playing David Carradine's Kung Fu part as Bill Hickok is just grating.

I'm mostly just gonna stick around to see if it becomes the "Ian McShane Saying Awful Things and Sounding Awesome While Doing It Happy Funtime Hour". If so, I'll stick around.

But Olyphant just isn't my thing, man. It's possible that I'll just always remember him being friggen TERRIBLE in Gone in 60 Seconds and that's what sticks with me. In a movie absolutely loaded with awful performances, he stands out. When Delroy Lindo and peak Hammy Cage can't even make you look good, then you really suck.

Bummer you don't like TO.
I liked him in "GO" and "The Girl Next Door" and on to "Deadwood" and "Justified" and "The Number four".

but yeah... deadwood becomes the "Ian McShane Saying Awful Things and Sounding Awesome While Doing It Happy Funtime Hour".
