Alex Smith suffering serious complications.

[Bickel] Hearing from several different people over last few days that Alex Smith is having devastating complications from his broken leg surgery battling infection. Supposedly he's had multiple surgeries to try to combat infection. Chances of him playing again in real jeaopardy.

This ****ing sucks.

seaofred 12-06-2018 09:53 AM

That sucks.

chinaski 12-06-2018 09:54 AM

Man that is horrible news. Thoughts and Prayers for the guy.

SupDock 12-06-2018 09:54 AM

Hate hearing that

Red Dawg 12-06-2018 09:55 AM

Holy damn. Alex is a good person. Hope he gets well and retires in good health.

loochy 12-06-2018 09:57 AM

Man...hurry up and nuke that guy with every antibiotic in existence!

TwistedChief 12-06-2018 09:59 AM

Ugh. That's not good.

Chiefspants 12-06-2018 09:59 AM

That's absolutely horrifying.

Sure-Oz 12-06-2018 10:01 AM

Damn. Hope he gets through this ok

O.city 12-06-2018 10:01 AM

That shit can get really wonky really fast.

We had some crazy shit come thru the Oral Surgery dep at the dental school when I was there.

Sofa King 12-06-2018 10:02 AM

Really sad to hear. He's a really good guy.

DJ's left nut 12-06-2018 10:06 AM

Compound fractures are a bitch for that very reason. I hadn't heard if the bone broke the skin but it sure sounds like it. Evidently that's incredibly common anytime there's an actual compound fracture and the bone is exposed to all the shit we have floating around in the air.

Football is a cruel mistress, man.

sedated 12-06-2018 10:07 AM

Awful to hear.

I know Gronk had some similar issues with his arm and they got that figured out

carcosa 12-06-2018 10:08 AM

Damn. Hope he recovers fully.

lcarus 12-06-2018 10:08 AM

He may not play again but man is he rich.

Frazod 12-06-2018 10:08 AM

Had a friend younger than me that died because they couldn't get what started as a minor infection under control. She was at one of the best hospitals in the area.

This shit could cost him his leg, or his life.

SuperBowl4 12-06-2018 10:09 AM

Alex Smith has a guaranteed salary of $71 million. That should buy the best doctors on the planet. Best Wishes to Alex Smith and his recovery.

sedated 12-06-2018 10:10 AM

Not sure what "partial reconstruction" of the leg is, but doesn't sound great.

I hope Alex makes a speedy and full recovery, a great dude for sure.

ToxSocks 12-06-2018 10:12 AM

CoMoChief 12-06-2018 10:25 AM

sucks

farmerchief 12-06-2018 10:25 AM

He just needs to concentrate on getting well. He is well enough off he could comfortably retire. Hoping for good health for him, from here on out

gblowfish 12-06-2018 10:26 AM

This is very sad. Alex is by all accounts a great guy. Has a foundation to get kids off to college back in his home town of San Diego, and was a good team mate and mentor during his time here in KC. I don't know if he'll ever play again, but I hope they can heal him to the point where he can walk and enjoy raising his kids pain free. I hope he has a great life, and that being a football player will be just one chapter of it.

O.city 12-06-2018 10:27 AM

It's pretty maddening how some treat infections. I get people in my office all the time with an abscess that's draining and they'll just "well, it doesn't hurt I'll come back when it hurts".

Ok, when it crosses facial planes and gets in your brain, don't call me. Go ahead and go to the ER.

My wife started talking about that stuff when the babies were born. "Oh yeah, they can get a little abscess or something and become vegetables...."

"Wait...what the ****?! And what do you mean jaundice can short circuit their brains? How the hell did anyone survive infancy 300 years ago?!?"

{Checks infant mortality rates in the 17th century...} Ah....they didn't.

JCBRAVE 12-06-2018 10:36 AM

Sucks to hear this about any player, fortunately hes collected over $140M in career earnings, his family is well taken care of if he cant suit up again.

Yeah, I have similar thoughts over immunizations, but that's not for this thread. LOL.

These situations like Alex are scary, but usually they can get it under control.

I've had to place drains in peoples neck and take out a gallon of shit because they didn't think that toothache was that big of a deal, then they get to go spend a month in the hospital.

No thanks. I'll stick to my scraping and drill and fill and let the oral surgeons deal with that shit.

I was never a fan, but wanted him to do well for the Chiefs when he was on the team. This is bad though. I wouldn't wish that injury or the infection on anyone but the truly evil.

Hope he recovers fully.

ChiefGator 12-06-2018 10:51 AM

Aw damn.. that sucks for anyone. I am a fan of his; he always seemed like a great, genuine guy. He and his family are in my thoughts and prayers for sure.

MahiMike 12-06-2018 10:51 AM

OMG. Not good. My uncle had something similar. Ended up have his leg amputated.

Get well Alex.

Buehler445 12-06-2018 10:54 AM

Shit man.

Wish the guy the best.

Infection can get ****ing nasty ****ing quick.

old_geezer 12-06-2018 10:55 AM

My prayers for a fast and full recovery. Football doesn't even enter the picture here. My concern is for Alex the human being; and he's a damn good one.

TLO 12-06-2018 10:57 AM

Hope he has a speedy recovery. Hate hearing this.

ROYC75 12-06-2018 10:58 AM

Hang in there Alex, I know all to we'll how leg infections can cause issues!

Best of luck and prayers, Godspeed!

In58men 12-06-2018 10:58 AM

Shit, I hope he gets better soon. That’s awful.

Hoover 12-06-2018 11:00 AM

Awful news. Such a great guy. Great teammate.

While Smith had his limits, what i always appreciated with him is that he was always available to play. Rarely hurt. Sucks to see him have such a good run here, and not be able to continue it in Washington.

Lower body injuries are such a bitch; all that puss and blood and shit just settles into your feet and your heart does a lousy job of getting circulation down there.

I'm sure he's just stuck in that hospital bed with his foot above his head about 23 hours/day. And all he can do is sit there, be in pain and wait. That just has to be brutal as hell.

TribalElder 12-06-2018 11:06 AM

****, hope Alex makes it through

That sucks

It was a compound fracture, which increases the likelihood of osteomyelitis, as well as the introduction of gram negative bugs. He's no doubt getting bombarded.

Depends on what you mean by long term. If he has osteo, he'll get at least six weeks of IV antibiotics. If they already placed hardware, his infection risk goes up substantially because the surfaces are, for lack of a better term, sticky.

We had a family member die two days ago from this exact thing. Compound fracture, screwed back together, got infected and advanced into septic shock.

In the dental field they've started working with different coatings for implants to try and reduce this. Usually dental follows medical so I'm guessing they're doing it there as well.

Either way, it's a long recovery.

Nope. And only 46 years old. Not a close family member and I don't know all the details. I can only assume that we wasn't paying close enough attention to the warning signs.

Sassy Squatch 12-06-2018 12:05 PM

[Rapoport] More on #Redskins QB Alex Smith: He’s had several procedures, sources say, and @MikeGarafolo adds they are removing tissue to clear the infection. Smith still approaches this with optimism about playing. Note: His hospital room was next to Colt McCoy’s during McCoy’s 1-night stay

The infection gets into the blood, you are in real, don't fool around danger to your life. Even if your already in a hospital like Alex, its not a guarantee that you make it. But, I dont see anything, anywhere that he's septic yet.

'Hamas' Jenkins 12-06-2018 12:13 PM

My wife's grandpa somehow contracted sepsis about 6 months ago (he's 86 so it could have come from anywhere) and he was in ICU for 3 weeks and the hospital proper for 4 more.

You don't mess around with it and I can only assume that's what happened with my distant family member is that he ignored the initial infection associated with the break/repair and let it go too long, until it was too late.

They can be going in for serial I&D of the wound site without him having systemic sequelae.

Thoughts and prayers to him, his family and his medical providers. Very sad to hear about his complications.

I've had a compound femur fracture that damaged my femoral artery. The wound was gnarly for a couple weeks. Felt like it took forever to close up.

Sucks to hear about the complications, I hope he gets well.
