Chiefs lock up Damien Williams

Without knowing what the money is, if it's on par with what we did with Ware and West a few years back, I like it. Doesn't remotely preclude us from drafting a RB to come in ahead of him.

Well that was fast. He's certainly shown explosive playmaking ability. That also probably doesn't stop us for drafting or signing another RB too.

Probably less than half guaranteed. Good deal.

pugsnotdrugs19 12-27-2018 07:21 PM

****ing awesome. That’s a great deal IMO.

pugsnotdrugs19 12-27-2018 07:23 PM

Great insurance to lock up a potential starter right now. Greatly mitigates the need at RB. With Damien and Darrell under contract, it’s not a position that we have to invest major assets into.

VAGOMO 4 LIFE! 12-27-2018 07:23 PM

Awesome deal Veach!!

Chief Northman 12-27-2018 07:23 PM

This is essentially double of what Ware/West got a couple years back....

Solid player that is an excellent complementary player, but can handle a starter’s load with decent results if called upon.

VAGOMO 4 LIFE! 12-27-2018 07:27 PM

I may catch some flack for this but he reminds me of dare I say it Jamaal Charles. He doesn’t have the top end speed but his elusiveness and ability to make plays when nothing is there

BWillie 12-27-2018 07:28 PM

Was making 790k before this a year.

I was afraid that he would hit the market and command a deal similar to Dion Lewis ($20M/4 years), so I love this deal tbh. Especially the length.

Eleazar 12-27-2018 07:29 PM

I hope the other D. Williams gets a strong look too. We could use a dependable one two punch like that

VAGOMO 4 LIFE! 12-27-2018 07:30 PM

Is Ware second string now?

The Franchise 12-27-2018 07:30 PM

Good.

chiefzilla1501 12-27-2018 07:31 PM

I guess it's OK. Kareem pretty much ****ed us. We just paid $4m for talent we could probably easily find with someone else's roster cuts or a late draft pick. Keeping hunt one more year for dirt cheap would have bought us time to do that. It's not a bad deal. But it's not a deal we'd have to make without the kareem incident.

Tornado 12-27-2018 07:31 PM

I’m hoping that even with this extension we continue to use a ‘committee’ in the future. If that ends up being the Williams Bros, awesome.

kccrow 12-27-2018 07:32 PM

Cautiously optimistic. He's performed well here thus far. Problem is he's a career sub-4.0ypc back and that's the most concerning thing to me. I wanted the Chiefs to retain him but I'm hoping about half of that 8.1 is performance based.

Are we seriously bitching about a career 4.0 YPC?

Outstanding. He’s really been a nice player who is a very lethal receiver.

Draft another RB in the mid rounds this Spring and you’re set.

**** that!! Veach needs to draft Defense all rounds this time. Cornerback needs to be the first pick

JoeyChuckles 12-27-2018 07:37 PM

Another Chiefs RB gets locked up. The cycle continues.

prhom 12-27-2018 07:38 PM

Well we didn’t have any other RB under contract for next year, did we? Not a bad guy to have in the mix. I like his burst in the open field. We need to draft someone to get the tough yards and keep drives going when the passing game isn’t working.

VAGOMO 4 LIFE! 12-27-2018 07:38 PM

I would honestly not draft another rb. Draft Defense maybe a wide receiver to replace Conley

Yes, dipshit. Prior to coming here he averaged 3.6. Re-read my entire sentence and then take the time to go ahead and process it. What you'll find is that I stated that I'm "cautiously optimistic" because of that past performance. You'll also learn that I hope, because of that past, the contract's "max value" is half performance incentives so that if he does revert to prior form the Chiefs are protected in a way. I'm so sick of reeruns on this ****ing forum.

$8 million guaranteed in the NFL after such a quick audition? They must like what they see in practice, smart enough to pick up the playbook fast etc.

Looking for work in 2019. He looked slow as hell. There were holes to run through and creases to exploit but he missed them.

In theory, sure. I haven’t seen any sign of that being he case so far. We needed him last game and he was out with a hamstring after the first quarter. I’m gonna need to see him actually play more than a few snaps to say we are set with him. I get it though, maybe he is what I’m describing and just got unlucky with the injury.

VAGOMO 4 LIFE! 12-27-2018 07:43 PM

Maybe he will extend Hill and Jones here soon

Sure-Oz 12-27-2018 07:43 PM

I’m convinced that drafting defense isn’t going to help improve it. It’s either the coordinator or Veach can’t identify defensive talent. We haven’t seen much impact at all from this year’s draft class. Go back to drafting offense so we can at least keep that clicking until Sutton dies from old age and we are forced to find a new coordinator.

BWillie 12-27-2018 07:50 PM

Seems like a bad deal for Williams. Wonder why he didn't want to test free agency.

VAGOMO 4 LIFE! 12-27-2018 07:50 PM

Maybe he likes a winning culture. Maybe he knows playing with Big Dick Pat will give him more opportunities and maybe he wants a super bowl. It’s not all about money. Before the season DAT signed here instead of another team where he could’ve made 1.25 mil more

I ****ing hope not.

Yes, the defense needs help in the worst way, but we cannot forget about the offense. We need to keep our weapons and line young and affordable.

Mahomes is the franchise for the next 10+ years. We need to constantly build the depth around him.

Couple things on this.
I think its a guarantee that Bowles is fired. He has history with Andy, I believe he replaced Castillo in Philly when Andy fired Castillo. We know Andy likes his guys.
I think this has very good chance of coming together and I LIKE IT!!

and just wait till year 4 and his contract becomes an issue for the team. He loves KC but will command waaaaayyyyy more than the likes of Stafford, Ryan and the likes. He could actually walk for $$$$ which scares the shit out of me.

Damien Williams should be the starter because he can do pretty much everything. But Ware and Darrel can play valuable roles too.

I mean, anything is an improvement over Sutton. I feel like he's basically Steve spagnuolo. A defensive mastermind who always puts together kind of a meh defense. Not bad, not great. Feel like he's riding the coattails of the elite defense Horton built in Arizona.

Perfect for our offense. Great to have this done.

Ware is a great change of pace as a backup. I don't want him being the #1.

And I think Todd Bowels would be great.

Love this extension. Great value.

pugsnotdrugs19 12-27-2018 09:28 PM

Interesting note: extensions such as Damien’s and Reiter’s will have the signing bonus prorated over a three year span (18-20) as opposed to just ‘19 and ‘20, the actual base salary years.

So by doing this before the season ends, it makes the deal a little better for KC.

This. Pretty nice move. We are going to have a lot of new players coming in, hopefully, most of them on defense.

pugsnotdrugs19 12-27-2018 10:17 PM

Stealing this from twitter, but thought this was pretty impressive.

Williams ran 4.45 at 5’11” and 222 at the 2014 Combine. He’s one of just 9 RBs at the combine since 2000 to be 5’11” or shorter and 220+ pounds to run 4.45 or faster.

For additional context, it’s clear as hell that Mahomes will end up making millionaires out of marginal talent in the years to come.

To the extent that Veach can properly evaluate player talent versus Mahomes added value, will go along way to getting the cap back in order.

RealSNR 12-27-2018 10:34 PM

**** all the Leveon Bell mocks in Draft Planet!

BlackOp 12-27-2018 10:45 PM

Seems like a pretty quick extension...he just had his 1st 100 game in his career last week.

West/Ware both got $9mil/3 yr deals but this was after nearly an entire season of production.

I can see Veach's angle if KC goes deep in the post-season...and Williams getting some national facetime.

I like Williams better than Ware (post injury)...just more versatile and faster.

KC is as charmed at RB as GB is at QB...it's kind of uncanny.

oldman 12-27-2018 10:56 PM

I like this deal and the idea of RB by committee is starting to go grow on me. I think you still have to have a main RB, but 25-30 touches a game wears them down pretty quickly.

suzzer99 12-27-2018 11:32 PM

With Mahomes our first cut line for any skill play should be "Can he catch the damn ball?" - if not, proceed no further. Williams passes this with flying colors. He's also quick as hell, but his instincts seem very raw. But he catches, even under pressure. Gotta hold on to that and hope he figures the rest out.

GloryDayz 12-27-2018 11:39 PM

Woot, and I hope he's all the more motivated because he got this deal. I hope he shreds the Raiders this Sunday.

Bump 12-28-2018 12:30 AM

that's fine, just don't fumble anymore when the play is pretty much dead like last week.

I think when he showed that he can move to different spots and catch the ball well it was a done deal.

The numbers he's put up since becoming the starter are impressive. Let's hope he can keep it up and stop with the fumbles.

PAChiefsGuy 12-28-2018 12:56 AM
