Chiefs to hire Matt House as LB coach [no, really - they actually are this time]

Source: the Chiefs are expected to hire University of Kentucky defensive coordinator Matt House as their linebackers coach.
— Field Yates (@FieldYates) February 8, 2019

Holy shit. I actually thought we should just straight up hire this guy as DC. He was on my list of top 3 candidates. We got him as LB coach? ****ing homerun hire if it comes to pass |
Oh, and one more thing...
**** MEGATHREADS |
|
|
This would be huge!
|
Wowa.
|
So...when we blitz...we will...
SEND THE HOUSE!?!???!!! |
Love these early hires by Spags.
Super Bowl 54, we’re comin’ in hot. |
Oh, my.
GREAT hire. |
|
Loading up this defensive staff is just awesome.
If they are well coached, the Chiefs might have a dynasty in the making. I’ll have tons of confidence in our SB chances this upcoming season because of it alone. |
He's a Matt! HOUUUSE!

Huh. Why would he come here? Maybe he hates recruiting.

But Mike Smith!!!!!

edit: ****. I'm stoked for this guy to coach Jones (and everybody else). |
Would love to see a defense where a 4 yard gain isn't a success
|
Fans were butthurt over Spags.
Now look at ya ROFL |

I'm worried this can cause some confusion with some of our younger players. If they get an interception and they know to take it to the House, where do they go? Sidelines?
|
Great hire. First he reached out to Pierce another college coach. I'm wondering if he's trying to get coaches who are familiar with the spread game since thats what the NFL has started to become. Great hire.

This guy helped mold Aaron Donald and lead a lower level, less talented CFB team to play good defense in a spread league?
My god.
Spoiler!
|
That is ****ing awesome I wanted him to be our DC
|
shocked. impressed.

"House’s inside linebackers – both of whom were first-year starters – contributed significantly to UK’s success. Sophomore Jordan Jones led the team in tackles (109) and tackles for loss (15.5) while earning second-team All-Southeastern Conference honors. He also became an adept blitzer with four quarterback sacks and a team-high nine QB hurries. Junior Courtney Love was third on the team in tackles with 76 and his season was highlighted by the fumble recovery that set up the game-winning drive at Louisville."

I just read that House was with Spags on the Rams staff in 2009-11.
Also Kentuckys defense under House ranked 6th in the nation in points allowed 16.8 https://www.kentucky.com/sports/spt-...225973705.html |

With all that bullshit said, House is the type of guy that those "butt hurt" fans wanted. He has a great resume of success with stud players. Now, I do not know if he helped make the players or if the players help make him, but he appears to have his shit together and understand the modern game of football. |

Would be nice if we could get the coaching pipeline going on D like we having going on O. I think guys like working for Andy.
|
Interested to see if we look at any of Kentucky's players in the draft.
Jordan Jones would be an interesting LB to bring in. |
Is this a Done deal?
|
**** **** ****.
House is a fantastic coach who helped transition the UK defense from a 4-3 to a 3-4. |
Matt House is in the house !
|
That's a great hire...can see him being groomed as the next DC too.
|
I am actually pissed.
****. Because Kentucky football. |
The Chiefs have hired Dave Merritt as their new defensive backs coach, per Yates (Twitter link). Merritt was actually hired as the Jaguars’ assistant defensive line coach earlier this offseason, but Jacksonville has apparently let him out his contract in order to pursue a better opportunity. The 47-year-old Merritt worked under new Kansas City defensive coordinator Steve Spagnuolo in New York, working as the Giants’ defensive backs coach alongside Spags from 2007-08. The Chiefs haven’t announced whether incumbent secondary coaches Emmitt Thomas and Al Harris will be retained.

Having Matt House as your LBs coach is like having Picasso paint your kitchen.
|
Oh my god!! This is ****ing huge! This is like signing a huge free agent. I take everything bad I said about Spags back

Matt House being Aaron Donald's defensive coordinator in college and helping to develop Donald is all I need to know.
Great hire. |
Merritt will be good for the secondary too IMO.

If anyone can diagnose the mysterious ailments we have at inside linebacker, it's House.

Nice.

Read up a bit on House when he was being talked about as a possible replacement for Greg Schiano at OSU. Schiano since moved on to the Pats as their DC.
Having a successful college DC, with experience game planning again rhe spread, coaching up a position, sounds like a solid move... |

Pierce played for Spags |
House is apparently very successful coaching against the spread. With the way the NFL is heading this seems like one of those “ahead of the curve” hires. Man it feels good to be a trend-setter and not a crusty old stubborn mule team for once.
|
Hitchens and DOD are going to develop into studs.

Sounds knowledgable. Very little coachspeak, a lot of specific observations. I like it.
|
So he'll be pushing for us to go get this guy now:

You mean "top 1 or 2 overall pick" Josh Allen? Ok.
|
Josh Allen is probably a top-5 pick. Definitely top-10. The Chiefs have zero shot at him.

Josh Allen is Quentin Nelson last year. I dream about somehow moving up. But no chance.
|
Seems to really focus on fundamentals and technique. Good communication skills.
|
The only Kentucky defender I could see the Chiefs being in on is Lonnie Johnson. He's long but lacks fundamentals. He's a guy they could target at the end of the 2nd if they don't take a CB sooner (or they want two).

so keeping bob sutton was like hiring steven hawkings to paint my kitchen?

While I don't know anything about Kentucky football, if the reactions from those who do, combined with other posted info mean anything... there is great reason for optimism with this dude
A fresh, innovative young mind from the collegiate ranks with a reputation as a spread offense killer, as well as top shelf talent developer... what's not to like? |

And that's actually the point. Kentucky was super competitive in the SEC this year, in large part because their defense only allowed 17ppg. |
Guys, IT’S HAPPENING!!!

Please whip these backers into shape for us, Mr House |

Chiefs' defense only allows 17 ppg next year and there'll be some new big boy trophies on display at Arrowhead. |
