Seems like he's a depth signing, though. Like Hitchens, the Cowboys had him play all 3 positions at some point.

He's played primarily SAM in Dallas but he's also been a backup most of his career. I think he's started like 12 games total.

EDIT: 22 games in 4 years.

Here’s what I’m thinking:

Spags and Veach know that they could opt to only use the SAM player in base packages. He might only play like 30% of the time. So it could be a cheaper option to fill that position with limited snaps.

Depth/special teams. 25/26 once season rolls around. Probably all 3 spots more m and w then Sam imo. Wondering if they even tendered Terrance Smith

Quick glance at PFF says he's good against the run and butt ****ing awful in coverage.

That makes sense. Like I said, he also had to learn the other spots in Dallas, just like Hitchens, and that versatility means he can be a backup to the other spots or they can mix up their packages.

I like that they value versatility in these guys. I think it's a huge asset to have guys that can play multiple positions. I'm really warming to the Mathieu signing because of that alone.

Ragland at his current price tag on the roster is fine.

Yes he struggled in the 4-3 in Buffalo, but he was also banged up. An aggressive 1 gap attacking system will do wonders for him. No more two-gap reading.
