Patrick Mahomes
When did you realize he was special?
Broncos game for me when he stepped in for Alex. |
Preseason of 2017
|
Literally when I watched his Gruden QB Camp episode before the draft
|
I think everyone in the game thread during the 2017 Bengals preseason...there was a collective "what the fuk are we watching"...I was in shock. It was "Is this real"?

2017 training camp he threw a td pass to Alegator Arms Wilson with Peteres covering him. He looked sharp and improvised on plays that Alex Smith would check down on.

Like I said in the last thread about this, the 70 yards in the air to Hill in the preseason.
|
all i needed was two things:
to watch his college stuffs and the chiefs to draft him. now i should state, that if it weren't for some on here, i would have never even known who he was. but i knew he would be something special. conversely, any video i watched of watson or trubisky and kizer, i was not impressed with the 'person'. :thumb: |
mahomesexuality is insane here....just remember, the faster they rise, the harder they fall. I expect a big drop off this year. Curb your enthusiasm a bit folks.

Funny how all those "miracles" ended the moment they got the green light to move...and went back to last place in the matter on an off-season. Crazy to think they were actually 12-4 for one season...and then back to what they always were. You guys got duped by big money/politics...and the NFL wanting to dig its claws into bigger markets. |
I guess when I started hearing how he was killing it in training camp... Not really knowing the offense but still punking the DBs..

just think folks, if Mahomes is 30% worse this year he'll only throw 35 TDs...what a loser!
|
When I saw a clip of him when he was in college rolling to his left and uncorking a ball almost 60 yards on a dime into the corner of the endzone.
I've never seen anyone do that. Ever. If you tried to do that in a video game it would be like "Nah, you can't do unrealistic shit like that." and your ball would be 15 yards underthrown and intercepted. |

When he blessedly stepped in for the most boring QB in Chiefs history, and began erasing the smell of decades-old stank.
Your first full starting game as a rook, against your most competitive and hated division rival, and he just walks right on up to the huddle in complete control and owns the entire ****ing day. You can't write old "Inside the NFL"-game breakdowns that ****ing good. Amen. |
The preseason throw to Robinson against the Titans
That throw he made against the Broncos in his first start, the one where he was fading and fading back and then throws a strike to robinson. That one told me he’d be more than special. |

To answer the question, it was his week 17 throw to Demarcus Robinson vs. Denver on the game winning drive
That play baffled me, and still does |

Watching him in college, throwing the ball all over the field, making insane throws, you could see the potential. Then he would make a throw that was an INT and you're like "WTF, were you thinking making that throw?" But, you could see the kid would never give up and with him, his teammates always knew they were in the game.
Never in a million years, would I have thought he would have such success so early in his career. |

At that point I was kind of excited, but I didn't want to overreact. Then the first big reception against Denver at the end of 2017 - was that Demetrius Harris? - got me more excited, as well as the comeback. Even after the Chargers and Steelers in Week 1 of 2018 I was holding back expectations, though I was starting to believe that it might be sustainable. The tipping point might be that big scramble against the 49ers. At that point I was convinced that our future is golden. |
I think the preseason throw to Robinson killed the server if I remember right.

Mahomes threw a curveball around defenders in that game. Prior to that, it had never occured to me that was even physically possible. https://twitter.com/FB_FilmAnalysis/...71506780536832 |
I want to say I knew when we drafted him because I watched him a Tech.... But I didn't know he would be this good.
That being said I knew when we drafted him that he was everything Alex Smith couldn't be. I would be fun to bring up that nights draft thread. |
When I watched his film against LSU and noticed he was being harassed by NFL defensive guys against the worst line I had ever seen and as he's running around for his life he never stopped looking downfield at receivers.
That's when I knew what he was, and what Alex was not. Also when he chucked that 60 yard bomb in OTAs that we all watched. And the final straw for me was when I heard about his chalkboard work with Reid for 6 hours or whatever the legend has grown to. I was like wait he's smart, too?? |

When Mahomes was drafted I think most people had the understanding that he had a chance to be special.
I think after the 2017 Broncos game it was more fathomable that the end of the Alex Smith era was much closer to being realized but I had not yet assumed Mahomes was "special". The 2018 preaseason games were definite eye openers as well but I still had doubts that he could do it consistently. I think week 2 going into Pittsburgh against a team that dominates the Chiefs every single year and putting up 42 points in a win was the I think the first time I thought to myself that Mahomes was special, and not that he was going to be special in a year or two down the road but that he was going to be an elite quarterback right away. The trade to move up and grab Mahomes will be not only a Chiefs defining moment but a NFL defining moment. |
I went to St. Joe his rookie year for camp and you could tell the arm was unreal. However, it was at the end of practice when the QB's and QB coaches were having a throwing competition that I knew... He was having fun with the guys, but you could tell by his demeanor he wanted to win that competition. He did not want to lose, even a petty game at the end of practice.

And soon. |
Two throws.
The one in college where he was rolling to his left and just flicked it 50 yards on a dime, and again in preseason of 2017 when he was rolling to his right and uncorked a missile to DeMarcus Robinson down the sideline. I had never seen anybody in the history of football make throws like that and I immediately knew that we had something special on our hands. Imagine watching that college highlight and thinking Mitchell Trubisky should be the first QB off the board. Yikes. |

As long as we have Patrick Mahomes, that's all that matters. |
Watching that Gruden QB camp on endless repeat the days following the draft... I could feel it. And it wasn't until seeing him in preseason that I really knew, but there was an article which I can't find anymore. Talking about the first time Reid saw Mahomes play and what he said.
"That's Brett Favre." |

Fall of 2016 on a casual Saturday afternoon watching college football. Was looking at all the games to choose from and had no idea who Mahomes was but decided to watch Texas Tech and the QB for them just kept making one great throw after another. :thumb:

Bearing in mind that before last season I'd only seen highlights of Mahomes and hadn't watched a complete game, the first time I thought He was something special was week 3 against the 49ers. Specifically that scramble away from pressure when he looped back and threw that laser beam into the back corner of the endzone to Conley.
I said it out loud the first time during the week 6 game against the Pats. His comeback effort at NE, after being down 15 (I think) at the half, was something we Chiefs fans hadn't seen the likes of, well, since Montana. I knew when he threw that 75-yard rocket to Hill to tie the game in the 4th quarter that he was like nothing I'd ever seen before in 40 years of watching the NFL. |

2017 preseason. The slider throw. I still can't quite wrap my head around that one.

Smith was just blandly competent. IE dull as **** and yes, boring. With Cassel( and yes, just like Smith ), you KNEW you weren't going anywhere. So, just kick back and enjoy the yuk-yuks. Smith was competent enough to string some along and make them believe for a moment that there might be a chance when there was never, EVER going to be one. Smith is the greater affront to Chiefs football, hands-down. |
I just pooped and this thread came out.

Also another note....when they showed the film of him walking through the facilities before the playoff game against the Colts and everyone working at Arrowhead was t bumping him and saying "get em Patty" I was like WHOA I could be wrong but I never remember seeing anything like that from any of our other playoff games. It was like the crew knew "he's too good to jinx with any BS playoff superstition"
