RIP Gunther
The @PFWAwriters Association just announced that long-time NFL coach Gunther Cunningham passed away Saturday at the age of 72. Well-respected defensive coach who was @Chiefs head coach from 1999-2000. #RIP

That's not very old in the big scheme of things. RIP to someone who I always thought was secretly a CP member.

RIP - You foulmouthed old bastard! When I was a kid watching him as our D-Coordinator, he was one of my favorites.
|
Dang that sucks. RIP
Gonna say **** family fun day in his honor |
RIP coach. You cared more about the team than most fans.
|
"**** Family Fun Night"
RIP Gun. |
A good man. Had a no BS approach he would not have allowed the disgraceful defense we witnessed last season.
|
I didn't realize that he was working for PFF. Interesting article:

There are some good players in Heaven, Gun. Line 'em up. FAX |
Hope this wasn’t how he learned about it.

RIP Gun. Damn good DC. Meanwhile -- "pallbearer". A "pall" is the heavy cloth that covers the casket. Not much of a thing anymore of course... But anyway, it's NOT a bunch of dudes who carry guys named (among others) Paul. :D |
I feel like I just lost an uncle.
The best things I ever wrote were about Gunther. |
loved that man as DC. Rest Gunther.
Sad day. |

And yet he still has more energy than Bob Sutton does.
I loved him...got out of his lane as a Head Coach, but dude brought fire. Anyone who can wear skeet shooting glasses and coach football is fine by me, and I think I learned half of my swear words from reading his lips on the sideline. |

He gave himself cancer because he was pissed we haven't traded for PP yet

Flawed person like we all are but truly loved KC and the Chiefs, was fan friendly and a genuine person. Gave it everything he had. God bless his family and friends and may he RIP
|
What type of cancer?
|
Hard Knocks cutup is blasted out as soon as I get home.

Sometimes he was a good coach, sometimes he was a shit coach, but I don't think there was ever a more dedicated or sincere coach who genuinely cared about this franchise beyond the paycheck as much as he did. |
I was very fond of Gunther. He was in over his head as a HC, but he was a GREAT DC. And a fun guy to watch. He was a no BS guy, you knew exactly what he was thinking at all times.

I remember before a game when he came back to coach defense for Vermeil we were in the EZ and he came up and told us to make sure and yell our heads off and not be like the wine drinking pussies in the nice seats. LMAO |

RIP sir.

I don't think it can be overstated how much Derrick Thomas' death affected Gunther personally. I think that's why he failed as a HC, it took him a long while to get over that.
|
Not a great coach, but I always loved the passion.
RIP Gun |
Other than Pete Carroll he was probably the best understudy under George Seifert who talked him into being a coach at Oregon while Carroll learned under George in SF. That’s where he got the 97-98 falcon D. Was just a 4-3 under with the Leo spot which was called the elephant originally with Charles Haley in SF and Dallas. Since he never ran any 3-4 his 4-3under years with DT where always the best choice to maximize his talents
|
Damn....younger than me...
I had the pleasure of talking to Gun on several occasions - believe it or not, at the Price Chopper :) That guy would stand and shoot the shit with the fans as long as they wanted to. He was, in all honesty, a fine gentleman and a people person. Coach - you WILL be missed. |
This legitimately makes me kind of sad. Damn.
RIP, Gun |
I think Gun's signature moment was in 1997 against the Bills when he blitzed Todd Collins four straight times from the 10 at the end of the game to secure the win.
|
The guy probably knew more swear words than any man in KC
