Wow they waived 2 guys I thought would make the team......surprising.

staylor26 06-13-2019 02:35 PM

It wasn't so much that he was legit it was that we suck at that spot and he's a fast dude, figured they'd like him for specials.

rabblerouser 06-13-2019 02:39 PM

Johnson and Williams will be resigned to PS.

chiefzilla1501 06-13-2019 02:39 PM

Pretty bummed about Williams. Thought he'd be a great 3rd down back and could be groomed to line up wide or in the slot.

I dunno. They usually do that for guys who make it to the final round of cuts. These guys aren't even going to training camp now.

New World Order 06-13-2019 02:40 PM

Johnson’s instincts must be horrible

It seems a little (a lot) early to be trying to slip them through waivers for the PS.

That seems unlikely to me. Cut way too early for that.

Darwin Thompson stole that role

I'm really pulling for Thompson. He's the guy I want in on passing downs. Little bastard is quick and elusive as hell on his college tape

That would have to happen after camp, not now. IIRC, there isn't a practice squad at this point of the year.

Kiimo 06-13-2019 02:45 PM

Gary Johnson whatever as I thought the incumbent linebackers would flourish with new coaching but I'm legit stopped dead in my tracks in Williams getting cut.

Maybe Darwin is knocking their socks off.

Who said that?

I don’t remember any of the people that liked him saying that. Make the team? Yes, but a future starter?

pugsnotdrugs19 06-13-2019 02:47 PM

If they’re getting cut after minicamp, that says all you need to know.

people in the UDFA thread definitely thought he would eventually start

OKchiefs 06-13-2019 02:54 PM

You'd think after having to search the waiver wire/trash heap for the past 5 years or so they'd finally try to make a serious investment at #2 TE.

Mecca 06-13-2019 02:56 PM

Anymore you don't even really need a second TE other than an athletic guy that can cause a mismatch.

Teams now when they go big just use a backup OT as a blocking TE..since the Chiefs are carrying Sherman they should teach him to do some of it too since well that would be helpful.

Harris was fine as a TE2. You only have so many draft picks and so much money.

Most teams have shit at TE2.

saphojunkie 06-13-2019 02:58 PM

Given that this is when the install starts, my guess is they weren’t picking up the playbook?

It's really interesting how quickly they can tell if a guy has it or not. So much more information seems to be there from just minicamps vs. college tape. I'm sure picking up the playbook is one of the factors.

O.city 06-13-2019 03:04 PM

Once they trade for Derron Lee, kinda made it unnecessary.

Kiimo 06-13-2019 03:13 PM

I feel like when guys get cut this early they don't go elsewhere and do shit. See: KeiVarae Russell

tooge 06-13-2019 03:13 PM

So are we down to 2 Williams at RB now or 3? I'm losing track of the Williams...es....

That's fine as long as Kelce stays healthy.

I don't think Sherman is big enough to handle that role. We still have Yelder and Wells. There was also some talk earlier about looking at Lovett as an H-back.

My point is that he’s about as good as it gets for a backup TE (hence why he got a nice contract form the Browns), and they were clearly fine with him. They haven’t been looking for a backup for 5 years like you suggested, this is the first.

Under Andy Reid all FB take reps with the TEs as well. That was touched on by Matt Derrick in one of RGR podcasts.

CasselGotPeedOn 06-13-2019 06:05 PM

We waived some turds and signed a turd.

RunKC 06-13-2019 06:10 PM

I wasn’t very high on James Williams but I was on Gary Johnson. I thought he would for sure make it, especially over that turd Neimann.

I don't know Mecca my man, Gronk and Hernandez were pretty successful together there for a short stint my friend. That is the type of combo TE play I am looking for sure.:thumb:

Why Not? 06-13-2019 06:31 PM

LOL at all UDFA overreaction. It’s a major feat for even one of those dudes(not the cut 3, any UDFA) to make the squad.

Hyde?

I like him too, he's not really a sleeper though. He's a proven hardnosed RB who just needs to improve in the passing game. Andy Reid's specialty is teaching the passing game. If Hyde becomes even a decent route runner then he is a legit starting caliber RB. We will have a quality pair of RBs that complement each other really well. Williams is a good passing game/edge runner. Hyde is a hardnosed runner between the tackles.

Kiimo 06-13-2019 06:44 PM

I think Darwin could do a heck of a job at being our Edelmann/Sproles

Return punts, Catch the ball out of the backfield, Run a lot of short routes as a WR. He's quick and great at making people miss. I'm not sure his vision is good enough to be a fulltime runningback at the NFL level.

He’s going to fill the Role DAT used to occupy, but do it better.
