Saints cutting Stephone Anthony, signing Zach Zenner

The Saints must have a positional need to fill, and they’ve found a guy to help them clear a spot.

According to Tom Pelissero of NFL Network, the Saints are releasing linebacker Stephone Anthony.

There’s apparently a clear sense they’ll bring him back at some point, so this looks like short-term cover. They’re a little undermanned in the backfield at the moment, with running back Alvin Kamara dealing with some degree of ankle injury.

The Saints drafted Anthony in the first round in 2015, traded him to the Dolphins in 2017, and brought him back in September after he was cut by the Jets.

UPDATE 2:51 p.m. ET: Per Ian Rapoport of NFL Network, the Saints are signing running back Zach Zenner, formerly of the Lions.

I dont know much about him but he was drafted in the first round so he must have been pretty good. The Saints D is really good so not being a starter there isnt as bad as it sounds.

Darron Lee was a 1st round pick as well and is garbage. Players aren’t going to come into this system and have a come to Jesus, change of scenery type of turnaround and all of a sudden realize their full potential.

Stephone Anthony was originally drafted by the Saints in the first round, 31st pick of the 2015 NFL Draft out of Clemson. He’s a stud athlete at 6-foot-2 and 243-pounds running a 4.56 40 and with a 37-inch vertical. He looked like the real thing coming out of college. But he never seemed to grasp the Saints defense as middle linebacker and was demoted and ultimately traded for a fifth-round draft pick to the Miami Dolphins.

He's got all the physical attributes of a prototypical MLB, but he's bounced around a lot. Saints felt he wasn't grasping the fundamentals of playing MLB in their system, so cut him.
