Nice! Keep them little buggers on the cutting edge!

Nothing special this yera, but I'm going to buy some stuff for my house like a new set of cookware. Maybe I'll buy a new phone.

Sofa King 11-13-2019 10:22 PM

Still no amazing deals? Come on people

BryanBusby 11-13-2019 10:57 PM

I might upgrade my phone if Walmart has a good deal and I hate myself to **** with that shit. Highly debatable.

Kids (8 and 10) are wanting computers. Anyone know of the best bang for the buck on buying 2 matching desktop computers? Not looking for anything super high tech, but good enough to get them a good computer for schoolwork and games. What’s a good price to target for such a purchase?

I picked up 2 HP 15.6” laptops with I3 processors and solid state drives for 230/each from staples 3 months ago.

Still shocked at the price. I’ll keep an eye out.

Somebody recommend me the best bang for the buck on computer RAM. Thinking 32gb.

allen_kcCard 11-20-2019 02:11 PM

This may spill over into a "help me build a PC" sort of post, but if anyone sees a good deal on computer components (MB/CPU maybe RAM and/or SSD) I'd love some suggestions. I am not looking for something super high end, just wanting to help my teenager finish a build he got the case and power supply for about a year ago that hasn't ever been completed.

I am thinking mid-range for the MB/CPU, and then maybe the RAM and SSD if those don't cost too much, and then I'll have him get his own monitor and a suitable video card to go with the monitor and whatever games he would like to end up getting.

NewEgg had their pc components deals week before last for some odd reason and now they are gone. Maybe they'll spring some good deals again on Cyber Monday, we'll have to watch and see.

Grabbed a pair of Apple airpods while they were on sale. Great sounds and very comfortable but had all kinds of connection issues when I would go outside. Ended up returning them for Galaxy buds. Very happy so far.

It's really weird. I find the airpods to be more rich and smooth while the buds have more clarity but seem a tad tinny. Wish I could get them just a little richer. When I activate any app EQ, the volume takes a significant dive making it worthless.

Piecing together a computer build right now and I'm kicking myself for missing out on the ADATA XPG SX8200 Pro 1TB NVMe SSD they had on sale the other day for like $81. The week before I ordered a 1 TB SATA SSD and they lost it in the mail for $86 just for a reference on how good that NVMe deal was. It was a lightning deal and sold out in 10 minutes.

I've pretty much just crossed off Samsung drives from my list. They are good drives but the premium they slap on them for all of the added marketing just isn't worth it to me.

That 660p deal could be ok but you can get TLC drives for that price.

That HP EX950 looks solid on paper but I have PTSD from past HP experiences and 2 TB is more $$ than I want to spend on something thats going to amount to maybe a couple millisecond differences in what I'll be using it for. Even a SATA drive is more speed than I will ever need.

I'm really just hoping the 500GB ADATA drive drops down below $50 somewhere on a flash sale and pair it with a 1TB Vulcan/MX500/SU800 SATA drive. The Vulcan drive is what Amazon lost in shipping that I bought on sale which I'm kind of salty about.

Shouldn't be too hard to find with a little patience. I havent even got the motherboard in the mail yet so still plenty of time. Going to be my first AMD build so hopefully its not a terrible experience.

https://pcpartpicker.com/list/s9jrrV

What I'm working with so far. GPU and case are being recycled from my current build. Just need the storage and probably going to upgrade the CPU cooler with something. That motherboard is completely overkill but I'm planning on in a couple years since AM4 is only guaranteed through 2020 that I'm going to upgrade to a top of the line Ryzen 4000 when they are clearing out stock for AM4+ or w/e they will call the next socket.

I'd like to hear how your build goes. I've done two with AMD GPU's but never used anything but Intel cpu.

Ya I'm a little anxious about it lol.

The last thing I bought that was AMD I wouldn't even be able to tell you what the **** it was. I was real young and bought a graphics card off the shelf at a Circuit City and based my choice on the larger number on the box. I had no clue what the **** I was looking at but I needed something to throw in a Dell premade computer so it could play games other than minesweeper. This was like early 2000's playing Call of Duty 1 and running a paper route.

I was in Walmart this afternoon. In the electronics aisle they had a 70" Vizio 4K LED TV for $698. Also PS 4 bundled with 3 games for $199. Others are selling the PS but not until Thursday. I got a flyer in the mail from Belks the clothing store, and they were advertising the PS combo available Thur - Saturday.

I've never played videos games since Pacman. I loved that game in the early 80's, got really good at it, would often score over 100,000. Eventually I stopped playing and have never looked at PS or Xbox. I think if I owned one, I would be more interested in something like flying an airplane. Do any of you think a novice pushing 70 years old would be kept amused with a PS, I would probably need games that I can play alone.

I live about 90 mins away from a Microcenter but most of their deals are being matched right now outside of the bundle deals and the $30 savings isnt worth the 3 hour round trip, plus they charge way more tax than Newegg.

Never too old to try. Just depends on what kind of games you would like. Watch some gameplay on youtube before you decide what to get. Nintendo switch might have an easier learning curve.

What are the read and write speeds on a TLC drive? I thought it was only about a quarter of what the 660p is claiming it could get? Why would you even compare the two? In addition, that Samsung drive has almost double the read write speeds of the 660p and that is why you pay the premium price. I am all about performance and not necessarily the cheapest.

You are probably confusing the 660p with Intel Optane.

The 660p is slower than most consumer NVMe drives. It uses QLC NAND which is the slowest, least endurance, and bogs down at like 3/4 max capacity of the drive, but it's the cheapest. So it still has it's purpose as it's faster than SATA and you can get a lot of it for less, but it's just not something I'm interested in, especially when the sales on it arent all that great comparatively.

I would just never buy a 660p when its within $10 in price, sales excluded, of drives like the PNY CS3030, HP EX920, HP EX950, SP A80, Sabrent Rocket, or SX8200 Pro.

Compare the speeds of a Samsung 970 EVO Plus to the Sabrent Rocket or SX8200 Pro and tell me why you would ever spend the premium on the Samsung drive? Unless you really love Samsung Magician or feel like you need an insanely long warranty, the Samsung is just a shit buy, imo.

EDIT: Nevermind, Samsung doesn't even offer the 10 year warranty on their Pro model NVMe's like they did their SATA drives so their warranty isn't even better than the competition any more.

I guess that was my point... you were comparing apples to oranges.

Just looking at the SX8200 Pro, which read write speeds and price are very similar to Samsung EVO 970 1 TB.

How was I comparing apples to oranges??????

I was comparing NVMe gen 3 vs NVMe gen 3. That's not apples to oranges.

One is built cheaper and sold at nearly the same cost because its made by Intel.

The SX8200 Pro goes on sale nearly monthly for around $100, sometimes less. But even then you have the Sabrent Rocket https://www.amazon.com/dp/B07LGF54XR...ogi&th=1&psc=1 or HP EX950 https://www.newegg.com/hp-ex950-1tb/...pRgnFi76nJ5KJA to go against that Samsung 970 Evo.

Like you said, to each their own. But you can save a whole lot of money when you realize that the overwhelming majority of NVMe's are made with the same internals, mainly Phison E12/TLC/Toshiba/64 layers. A few like the SX8200 Pro/HP EX9## use a SMI controller and Micron NAND and some drives are being updated to gen 4 and 96 layers and Samsung has their own memory but they charge a pretty premium for it and the gains arent linear with the price, you can literally buy a Gen 4 Sabrent Rocket 1TB for the same price as a 970 Evo Plus 1TB... compare those drives against each other. Not going to knock anyone for buying Samsung because they are top tier drives, but for me its just not worth the added cost and I have a Samsung SATA as my boot drive in the computer I'm using right now that I built 6 years ago.

The bolded parts was what I was talking about with apples to oranges.

No one was ever comparing a SATA drive to a NVMe.

Would you care to link up exactly what you are talking about? I thought you were talking about SATA.

You quoted me saying the 660p was suppose to be 4x faster than a drive using TLC NAND. I figured you were confusing the Intel 660p with Intel Optane because then that would make sense.

At this point I'm just going to assume you have no idea what TLC or QLC means. It has nothing to do with the interface of the drive and instead refers to the type of NAND the drive is using. From fastest to slowest there's SLC, MLC, TLC, and QLC. QLC is the slowest of the lot and has the least endurance, though endurance probably wont matter to 95% of people who use a computer because the drive will be obsolete long before the TBW rating is met. The 660p uses QLC NAND where every drive I mentioned, along with the Samsung drives, use TLC, the Samsung Pro models use MLC. So the 660p is one of the slowest options you can find for a NVMe and the price it costs for that Intel badge doesnt make it worth it when you can spend the same amount or $10 more, sometimes less, and get a drive 2x faster.

I thinking of buying a new all-in-one. On Best Buy Black Friday they've two Lenova's I like, which of these two do you think is better and or would you buy something different. I'm trying to stay about $500.

I would go with the Ryzen model. It's a better processor and will feel snappier from the start with the SSD vs the HDD. You get more storage with the Pentium one but it's a HDD so I would eventually look to upgrade both of them down the road with a larger capacity SSD. Plus you get a bigger screen.

I picked up the AMD with 23.5" monitor and it's day and day better, faster, nicer than the 5 year old HP all-in-one that I had. I paid $499 on Wednesday, in today Black Friday booklet the price if $30 higher, $529.

2019 Black Friday Thread

I was all Gaga about that walmart Samsung, but it’s a totally hamstrung version. It has only 10 zones for its backlight manipulation compared to 60 or 90 in the other models in that line.

It’s just like sams and costco when they get those special models made just for them with lowered specs to allow a lowered price.

The tv gurus can chime in. I’m just gearing up to purchase one and I hope I’m wrong, but the specs looked way off to me.

EDIT: I must have confused the 10-zone tv with this one. This one has 96 dimming zones. It was definitely a Walmart tv with a super low price.

I bought a couple of 10.2" iPads for my daughters for $249 from Target's website this morning. I'll pick them up tomorrow afternoon, after the insanity has abated.

I actually enjoy shopping on BF as long as it's after dinner time. Then you can still find some of the reasonable deals on accessories (whether it's electronics, Blu-Rays, games, etc.) without dealing with the human detritus.
