Is there no respect for the dead.

TwistedChief 11-15-2019 06:14 AM

I’ve posted this before, but in the 4th quarter of that game, Ray Crockett stood up on the Broncos bench and yelled to the crowd, “Tonight I’m gonna go home and put on my Super Bowl ring, and all of you are gonna go back to your trailer parks.” My hatred for Denver has burned white hot ever since.

DTHOF 11-15-2019 06:37 AM

Thanks for posting this now I remember why I hate the Broncos with their cocky attitude. The beginning of the DT outburst was due to Sharpe going for his knees a couple times and if I remember right a punch to the groin and DT lost it. There was also speculation at the time that Sharpe was talking about DT dad who was shot down and killed in Vietnam. In other words Sharpe was not innocent by any stretch.

To be fair, I was a college freshman from Florida and had no real connection to Missouri, so it didn't really hit home for me. I HATED Shannon Sharpe during that period though. A good friend of mine was a freshman at Duke that year along with Kyle Shanahan (Mike Shanahan's son and of course now the 49ers head coach), and I actually ended up emailing Kyle asking if Sharpe was as much of a dick as he seemed. We had some nice back and forths after that, but he told me that Sharpe was one of the nicest players and it was all an act.

I never believed that until we now find him gushing over Mahomes.

Dartgod 11-15-2019 08:31 AM

Good Lord, how did we manage to lose against Bubby ****ing Brister?

The cheap shot at the back of Derrick Thomas's legs was really dirty and he did that to many. He was a slime ball and see why you hated him like so many of us did. :#

Shannon kept repeating Derricks girlfriends phone number and saying he wished she would quit calling. Then he said I might go see her again after the game. The number was sang to the tune of 867-5309.

This team almost always plays down to the level of competition it faces.

It's right in the banner of the vid-1998

Demonpenz 11-15-2019 10:49 AM

Gannon had a bit of what we expect now of QB's running and making plays with their feet.

ToxSocks 11-15-2019 11:01 AM

Score is 23-7 (a two score game) with 6min in the 4th qtr and the Broncos had already pulled their starters.

The NFL has changed a lot since then.

FloridaMan88 11-15-2019 11:21 AM

What is the point in posting this trash, JFC.

ChiefBlueCFC 11-15-2019 12:19 PM

Remember this game, don't remember specifics but that game was the beginning of the end of Marty in KC.

fan4ever 11-15-2019 12:19 PM

Y'know I've heard about this for years but never saw it...even looked for it on youtube and couldn't find...so now that I've seen this fabled "melt down" I'm kinda like "meh".

ToxSocks 11-15-2019 12:24 PM

As a kid i remember it being a lot worse.

Yeah I never saw it and always thought it was a legitimate meltdown. But it's just two penalties...meh. I thought he'd be screaming and trying to fight Sharpe while teammates try to hold him back or something.

Chiefspants 11-15-2019 12:43 PM

Symbolically, this game was way worse in the moment than it is looking at the performance in hindsight, or even looking at the final score.

This was the statement game the Chiefs needed on Monday night to revive their season against a vulnerable Broncos team without John Elway. It was the first time the Broncos came to Arrowhead after skating away on a controversial call on Tony G in 1997 season that was supposed to be the Chiefs year, but this time - we had Gannon here to right the ship. This was the statement game the Chiefs needed to show that this was, finally, the year the Chiefs were going to go all the way. It ended up being an undeniable statement to fans that this era of contention was over.

Instead, we got trashed by Bubba and Shannon Sharpe got the face of our franchise to meltdown by reciting the phone number of Derrick Thomas' girlfriend (among other kind things Shannon said about her).

It was a complete unraveling, and was the nail in the coffin between a 6 game losing streak suffered by who was supposed to be the best team in the NFL. It was the symbolic death of Marty's time with the Chiefs and the 90's "dynasty that never was".

I think an important thing to remember is that Arrowhead was looked at as the toughest place in the NFL during this time. The Chiefs DID NOT lose home games in the regular season. 8-0 at home was an expectation in the mid to late 90’s. I honestly think the end of the Marty era (and the ushering in of the club level era) broke that kind of rugged fandom the stadium once had. The highlight OF the 90’s was probably John Elway pleading with the refs for the crowd to quiet down. Arrowhead just hasn’t quite recaptured that since that era for one reason or another.

The Chiefs played the game they were capable of in Mile High that year and blasted the Broncos out of the gate... and still, John Elway came from behind to win it as insult to injury. I was six, I think that was the first time I ever cried at a sporting event. That game, in my honest opinion, was even worse.

We remember all of this the same. It’s so nice to have flipped the script on those mother****ers with Mahomes.

Weirdly, I was five at the time but watched my friends 97 & 98 Broncos highlight videos as an autopsy/burial of the 97-99 Chiefs after Gannon dunked on us with the Raiders to end the 99 season.

Bill Brasky 11-15-2019 02:36 PM

Thank you so much for posting this. I was looking for this game just last week!

Titty Meat 11-15-2019 02:39 PM

Funny how Crockett and Brister both ended up here during the Vermiel years

KCTitus 11-15-2019 05:18 PM

I think KC got burned for at least 3 giant naked bootlegs by Brister...I think it took this team 3 coaching regimes and more than a decade to stop getting burned on that play.

I'm shocked all the NFL didnt use that play at least 10% of the time against KC back then...they over pursued so much.

Reerun_KC 11-15-2019 05:29 PM

This happened to be one of my favorite memories of the Marty error.

That was also the season Whitlock got suspended from the Star for getting in to it with the Patriots fans and calling Drew Bledsoe gay.

My wife’s family is from Indiana. I had a driver to the airport recently. He said, “Our local high school has had some great athletes. Jeff George for one.” My response: “That means you had Jason Whitlock as an alum too and that created all sorts of disappointment for future Chiefs fans.”

LMAO

We could've just rolled with Gannon. But Carl wouldn't let that happen...

Line Judge 11-15-2019 09:24 PM

My wife and I were on the side opposite the Chief’s sideline 40yl 10 rows up. Towards the end of the game many of the Chief fans had left. A couple of dozen Denver fans were standing on the seats behind us and saying terrible things about the character of the Chief players - loudly.

We were also at the first game played at Arrowhead. It was an exhibition game with the Chargers and Johnny Unitas was their quarterback.

Imon Yourside 11-15-2019 09:57 PM

Thomas failed to pull Shannons helmet off and beat him with it.

DT would be dead a year later. Really sad that he never was able to redeem himself against Denver. Just an embarrassing night. I understand why it happened. But like the Cleveland Pittsburgh deal, sometimes a player just loses it and goes Daffy Duck.

Um, it was more than two penalties - it was like 3 or 4 on DT and 1 or 2 on Wayne Simmons, all in the last few minutes of a game they were going to lose anyway.

Denver beat our asses with their backups. It was harsh. The end of the Marty era.

For all the hate people gave Justin Houston, DT never got a playoff moment either. In fact, did DT ever match Houston’s game against Indy last year?

Denver took DT out of the game in the 97 playoffs by doing heavy running sets and beating the Chiefs D through smash mouth football. It took DT’s ability to wreak havoc and create turnovers out of the game, leaving it up to the Chiefs O to put together more than 14 points on the field.

Why am I still annoyed by this?
