If Mahomes wasn’t avail, what was KC strategy for QB?

Good thing we won’t ever know but had this convo with some friends and we all had diff opinions. What do you think the plan would’ve been?

TimBone 02-05-2020 06:05 PM

Dont give a ****.

It was Watson. He was the backup plan. Still way better than Alex and any option we would have had the next few years had we missed on Pat

The Franchise 02-05-2020 06:10 PM

Easily Watson. Not as good as Mahomes but still more of a threat than Alex.

ToxSocks 02-05-2020 06:11 PM

I dont know that they move up for Watson though. I think they ride it out with Alex a few more years.

By drafting Mahomes, many suicides were averted.

I am going to wake up in a cold sweat when I have nightmares of option 1.

I don’t remember it being a foregone conclusion we were even looking at QB that draft. Here were a few mocks:

CBS: Zach Cunningham LB Vandy (?). Pat #13 NY Jets
https://www.cbssports.com/nfl/news/2...-quarterbacks/

WalterFootball: Forest Lamp, G Western Kentucky. Pat #25 Houston
https://walterfootball.com/draft2017_1.php

NFL com: Dalvin Cook, RB Fla St. Pat 32 to Arizona
http://www.nfl.com/news/story/0ap300...tivated-trades

Fox: Tradavious White, CB LSU. Pat 25 to Houston
https://www.foxsports.com/nfl/galler...k-draft-042517

SI: KC.

Mock drafts don’t mean shit when it comes to actual info.

ToxSocks 02-05-2020 06:31 PM

I'm not convinced that they move up for Watson. Watson's play recognition just doesn't fire as quickly as Mahomes, which is why he holds the ball so long and takes so many sacks.

And that would've shown up on the drawing board....the one Reid put Mahomes through the ringer on.

And lets not forget Reid's favorite Alex trait: Gigabytes.

I think this is spot on. We never would have traded up to get Watson. The only we traded up for Mahomes is because we thought he was the best talent in the draft.

Why do you say that? Watson was the higher rated prospect by all the mocks and draft grades. Doesn’t mean we rated him higher but how do you know this?

Considering all the backdoor monitoring of Mahomes, Veach's constant contact for 2+ years with Mahomes' people, and the complete infatuation he had with Mahomes, i doubt Watson was ever really on their radar aside from your expected due-diligence. Veach was in on Mahomes since he became the starting QB at Tech.

Of course none of us KNOW, but based on what we've heard, it was Mahomes or bust.

And like i said in my previous posts, im not sure that Watson wow'd Reid on the board. Mahomes' intelligence is one of the best parts of his game.

If Watson processed as quickly as Mahomes did he wouldn't hold the ball so damn long and take so many sacks.

Andy gets his qb

Yep, I don’t recall any hot rumor about interest in Watson

Deberg_1990 02-05-2020 07:17 PM

Ride it out with Alex, then go get Lamar Jackson in 2018.

If Reid could make Michael Vick a pretty decent passer, he certainly could do it with Lamar.

We don't know if they thought Mahomes was the best talent in the entire draft, but we know they felt like he was the better talent over Watson 'cause he was still on the board when we took Patrick.

I think they did consider Mahomes the best talent in the draft. Reid said Veach kept telling him Mahomes was the best college player he had ever seen in his scouting career. Dorsey/Veach both said if they had the #1 pick, they would have used it on Mahomes. They didn't need the #1 pick because the people at 1-9 were idiots and the KC folks knew it.

Let me guess - you'd prefer any option to Mahomes, because you're a sick, twisted, miserable **** and can't stand the fact that everybody's so happy.

Mr_Tomahawk 02-05-2020 10:09 PM

This thread makes me angry.

What if the British had won the Revolutionary War? What if the Cuban Missile Crisis had not been averted? What if Hitler had kept his non-agression pact with the Soviet Union? We can play these games all day.
