How often do you wash your coat?
For context, I was riding the train the other night when a man and woman got into some kind of spat near me. She was nice looking, well put together mid-thirties, and as she was walking off he said something along the lines of "...and wash your coat" and she looked back at him completely shook by the comment.
I immediately smelled my coat. It didn't stink but got me thinking that I'm on my 2nd winter season with it and have never even thought about washing it even though I wear it nearly everyday in the winter. I looked around at all the people in coats and wondered if I'm just some sort of savage not washing mine or is everyone else not washing theirs either. Are there coat washing best practices, like every week, once a month, after each season, as needed? I told my wife about it later and while she apparently dry cleans her coats regularly she'd likely use "wash your coat, bitch" as an effective insult around her office. So, how often do you, or whoever does your laundry, wash your coat? |
about as often as i wash my legs
|
If I wear it a few times around a campfire or sweat in it on a snowboarding outing, I'll try to wash it ASAP. Otherwise, no stink - no wash.
|
I shampoo it daily, then comb it. I'm very particular about my fur.
|
I have 3 coats I wear each winter
I wash them each once a year They might start smelling gamey sec |
Every other week or so with my comforters.

alaskin fur alaskin fur

Every month during fall & winter.

What's a coat?
Seriously though, I have 2 coats that very rarely get used. I'll take them to the cleaners once every couple years depending on how much I had to wear it. I've worn a coat once this winter, so maybe next year. |
My thick flannel hoody work coat with faux wool lining gets it 2-3 times a year, the rest get worn so infrequently that the thought of washing them never really crosses my mind
But I suppose a good wash never hurt anything |
Should be a poll.
Not very often.... post-smoking establishments when I smell like cigarettes (and even then, I usually just throw it in the dryer). After ATVing when there's a layer of dirt on everything. |
Poll fail on my part but I didn't want to go through a bunch of effort just for weekly washed coats to become the new 4.3 40 time on CP.

I don’t wear coats a ton these days. I get by with hoodies at work or a jacket otherwise And a stocking cap since I started bic-ing my dome. I keep. Heavy coat and coveralls in my pickup if need be.
I hate heavy coats these days. |
I don't know that I've ever washed any of my coats. I really don't wear them that often. I'd guess my snow-shoveling coat would be the one that gets the grossest? But it's a Carhartt with faux-wool lining so I don't think I'm gonna worry about it.
And if you let "wash your coat" get to you it's probably time to consider suicide. Shit, if you hurl that as an insult you should do the same. |
I moved to Florida 12 years ago. All my coats are boxed in the attic.

The only time I wash my coat is after I go to the disgusting-smelling skating rink with my kids. That place is nasty.
|
Never. I just replace my coat every few years.
|
I only wash my coat if it's a full moon on Friday the 13th and I've had 3 consecutive days of clean breakers.
To answer your question more directly - very rarely. Twice a year maybe? |
What nasty shit are you doing that you need to wash your coat more than once or twice a year?
Actually, never mind, I probably really don't want to know the answer to that. |

Wear heavy coat over hoodie to work in the morning. Take coat off when I reach the office. Wear coat home after work and hang it up. I spend maybe a total of 15 minutes a day wearing it. It doesn't need washed very often. (Side note: I'll wash my hoodies once a week. I'll wear one for 1-2 days, then it goes in the laundry.) But I typically don't take my hoodie off during the day in the winter. |
So, what's wrong with this.
I told my wife about it later and while she apparently dry cleans her coats regularly she'd likely use "wash your coat, bitch" as an effective insult around her office. I just can't believe you don't wash your coat! |

I don't really have to wear a suit coat, unless I go to training. And in Phoenix, unless it's raining one of the 8 days it rains every year, coats are just unnecessary. But when I was in sales/marketing, back in STL, KC, CHI, Los Angeles, etc., I still don't remember actually washing a coat or having a suit coat cleaned that often. Maybe once every couple months at most? I didn't put the things on until I got to the office. Once in the office, I took it off and hung it. Probably only wore a suit coat about 10 minutes a day. |
I always wait until my Wife says "What the hell is that smell, a skunk!??"
ROFL LMAO |
Depends on which coat. I usually wear my Carhartt, it gets washed once or twice a year.
