This is pretty cool, actually.

It might be because he's still very young, but Pat clearly loves his alma mater and probably has a special fondness for those Tech teams he was a part of even though he didn't win much with them. The Chiefs will never be able to adequately thank Patrick for everything he's done for them, but I imagine winning a title or two with some of those Tech guys might make the next one a little more special for him.

Oh I’m familiar with Washington.

I’m just not seeing this as filling a need. Thompson/Darrell Williams can be that 3rd down/passing game back... Chiefs need more of a pure runner.

Ubeja Vontell 04-08-2020 04:17 PM

Good pick up.

27 years old, not many carries, and can catch the ball.

His average per carry a gaudy 5.1 but.....a bit funky with two 6 plus seasons and two 3 plus seasons, so...?

He does have some quicks.

Nice addition.

Well okay Veach build up that fricken defense and offensive line with draft picks and cheap contracts. I was pushing for a first round back but you pair Pat Mahomes with a top ten caliber defense you are going to win a ton of games. Corner/LB/IOL or LB/Corner/IOL in the draft please.

DRM08 04-08-2020 04:37 PM

This is a good move. Patrick and DeAndre had great chemistry at Tech.

I do.

The Chiefs don't have a lot of cap space so they're signing guys to 1 year deals whom they hope show enough to make the PS or 58 man roster.

Only the Top 51 players count against the cap so as long as Veach continues to sign guys to Vet Minimum deals, the cap impact is zero.

No, that's not the case. The Chiefs passed 55% or the time and ran 45% last season. Been that way for a couple-three seasons now.

DeAndre is one of the most complete backs Tech has had since 2000. He can catch, pass protect, and run inside and outside the tackles. And best of all, as you said, he has great chemistry with Pat. My take this is a great signing for the Chiefs as a 2nd/3rd RB.

I also don’t think this precludes taking a RB if they have a top 10 grade on a certain player and they fall to 32 - or conversely a Top 20ish grade on a player that falls to 63. IIRC both Williams and now Washington are on one year deals, lots of future flexibility and potential need. While I like what Williams and Washington bring to the table and RB is now NOT a high priority need, there is certainly room to improve the position through the draft if the an elite back we really like falls.

BWillie 04-08-2020 04:56 PM

This guy is gonna get practice squaded or he'll be the RB3 and take Darrells spot.

He’s not eligible for the Practice Squad any longer, he’s been in the league too many years. If cut, maybe a salaried personal workout partner for Mahomes to the tune of $2,000,000?

Wrong RB it was on Richard.

Red Dawg 04-08-2020 05:05 PM

I like this move.

RunKC 04-08-2020 05:07 PM

RB depth got worse and was exposed as the year went on last season. Having another quality receiving back on the roster is beneficial in case of emergency. I like this and the Weber adds.

Remember last year vs the Colts when Tyreek and Sammy were both out and Damien Williams was still hurting?

Would have been nice to have this guy..

Kellerfox 04-08-2020 05:14 PM

Here is a fun fact: DeAndre Washington was the host player for for Damien Williams when he visited Texas Tech as a JUCO prospect in January of 2012. Williams obviously ultimately chose to attend OU, but spent time with DeAndre being shown around campus and town. Those two also have a pre-existing relationship, albeit less significant.

60-40 the last two years according to pro football reference.
2019: 576 passing attempts vs 375 rushes
2018: 583 passing attempts vs 387 rushes

scho63 04-08-2020 05:23 PM

We can still pick an RB in the draft.

We will sign many players like this to fill voids, protect against injuries, provide depth and help if any draft picks shit the bed.

Hmm. Last season I did the math around week 13-14 and it came out to about 55.6% passing. 2018 I could've sworn Andy called 56.4% passes. Andy's been pretty consistent about the percentage between passes/rushes since coming to KC, IIRC, and it's been right around 55/45.

Nope, got my years mixed up. Over the last two seasons Andy's been calling more passing, particularly after we lost Kareem. Before 2018 Andy was more balanced. Though 60/40 is still pretty balanced.

O.city 04-08-2020 05:38 PM

He’s a nice little 3rd down scat back type

Bump 04-08-2020 06:04 PM

nothing wrong with a little depth, he had 36 receptions last year so there's that.

tyecopeland 04-08-2020 06:27 PM

We cant have much space left after this. Even if he signed for the minimum hes gonna take up a little over 200k of our meager space (difference between him and the guy currently counting as the 51st roster member) we had after restructuring Watkins. Robinson still has yet to be counted against the cap and he'll add another 400-600k against the cap. So according to that and spotrac current numbers we should have just a little over 2 mil in space with our top 51.

BossChief 04-08-2020 06:33 PM

Very solid pickup. This kid can play. Showed up consistently for them in an offense that was trash. He has a chance to be pretty good for this offense.

I'm thinking he'll be equal to Damien Williams from the videos. Just remember this offense elevates players. he might just be better.

deep down even though i knew it would never happen I was hoping to wake up one day and check twitter and see that the Chiefs signed Kareem Hunt

not this little dude. . . RB seems to be the least of the Chiefs worries..they sign a bunch of shit and throw it at the wall to see if it sticks..but I guees all those years with number 1 running backs = 0 superbowls, so maybe they are onto smething

this is an obvious Mahomes signing. . i guess if there's chemisry with QB1 that cant hurt. .

This is just like the Damien Williams signing a couple years ago. Cheap one year deal, but sneaky good for an Andy Reid offense. And just watch, if he shows up this year we will extend the kind and let Damien walk (which is the right move).

And I don't think this spells doom for Thompson, you just don't want to put all your eggs in that basket. Now I feel like the Chiefs basically have two Damien Williams' on their team. Great signing.

People had a desire to see a Kareem Hunt clone. The guy had some nice flashes of talent in preseason against 3rd stringers, and he clearly has a great speed/power combo when he runs, so unwittingly, he was going into a situation where fans would place unreasonable expectations on him.

The NFL doesn't work like that. Darwin needs to keep improving, but if he does, there's no reason at all why he can't be a decent backfield contributor for the Chiefs in 2020.

That being said, he should also probably study up on the NFL rules for advancing a fumble. That would be helpful.

Dre' was a very good running back in the Air Raid offense at Tech.
Very good at catching balls out of the backfield. hard nose runner. Just never seemed to find his groove with the Raiders. Will be interesting if the change of scenery will help his career.

Protecting Patrick is is the utmost priority, this is part of his load management, and as I said positional value is drastically different than most teams because the Chiefs have a Future HOFER leading the Offense. Through IOL or RB it could either way in the 1st but to secure the Mahomes investment KC must do everything they can to help him immediately. Scrap pile shit, and hope's and dreams on flyers won't get it. Veach has said that he'll be looking for more options for Mahomes to work with

Ubeja Vontell 04-08-2020 10:07 PM

The thing about running backs is we don't see a HUGE difference in them like we do at other positions. What RB isn't fast, shifty, yep, they all are or they aren't playing the position. A GREAT RB will average...4.4ish, a so so RB...4.0. Hell there are HOF RB's...3.9.

i would never spend big $$$$ on any RB.

What did the Lions do when Barry Sanders was there? The Pats haven't had a slew of great RB's.

well they were at least relevant with Barry Sanders. They had a couple of good wide receivers, but not much else on that team.
