KC Webster House closes permanently

Well, this sucks.

Don't know anything about it and the link is behind a paywall, but that's a damn cool building.

It appears to be a moderately priced restaurant and shops.

Site is here.

It's a fine dining restaurant/antique shop basically attached to the symphony next door.

It's where all the yobbos with more money than sense go to eat before events there.

TrebMaxx 04-20-2020 04:26 PM

Same here, don't know anything about it. Freaking KC Star paywall.

KCUnited 04-20-2020 04:29 PM

People everywhere mourn closure of restaurant they couldn't afford

kcclone 04-20-2020 04:34 PM

The restaurant, hospitality, retail and service fall out is just getting going. I would expect 30-40% of the locations we all frequent to go out of business in the next year. Strip malls will be 30-80% empty everywhere.

Yep, got that much, just not on the story of why it's closing. I'm assuming teh COVID strikes again.

There's still quite a bit in the service sector chugging along. All the others you mentioned...yeah it's not going to be pretty.

Titty Meat 04-20-2020 04:39 PM

The KC market oversaturated

Deberg_1990 04-20-2020 04:43 PM

Well this sucks. I always enjoyed eating there.

I still mourn the closing of HOUSTON'S at the plaza. What a great place it was! Great Food and Great memories!

KCUnited 04-20-2020 05:13 PM

Great mammaries too

Kiimo 04-20-2020 05:15 PM

Y'all better not lose another Taco Via, I require those to stay open for when I visit.

It was bad enough losing Winsteads

Winsteads is still around on the plaza and 1 in Overland Park.

Both places you mentioned taste like shit tho

Didn’t even know there was more than 1 here. Apparently I’m right in between both of them and I’ve never been to either.

I'm afraid you're correct on your assessment, I think many restaurants that aren't big franchises are pondering closing the doors permanently.

Even when they do open the state will tell them the tables have to be so many feet away from each other until the virus subsides.

Had a delicious triple Winstead ketchup only on Saturday. Ate it in their plaza parking lot.

Eleazar 04-20-2020 05:59 PM

Never heard of it

Unimaginable even three months ago.

It will surely be sadly missed.

Not a fan of the paper thin patties. Westport Flea Market is my jam AND its 50% off everything daily between 1-6pm

|Zach| 04-20-2020 10:49 PM

Bummer. Had a nice old school vibe in a unique building and decent food. Enjoyed some good meals there.

The correct vernacular is “more dollars than sense.”

Get it right, fool. If you’re going to poke fun at rich folks at least have the common courtesy to get the insults right. :D

Yobbos?

Sits across the street from my office. Have been in our building 8 years and have only been over there once or twice. I’m sure the rent is insane.

cooper barrett 04-21-2020 01:29 AM

kinda like closing the Wishbone Just different

I hear ya, but that’s why I go with the triple. Westport is also tasty.

Webster House will be missed. It was a fancy pants dinner before an event at the Kauffman Center. I hope the building is taken care of, the real shame would be to see it fall into disrepair.

Bill Brasky 04-21-2020 10:04 AM

Too bad. That place had awesome food and was a very cool venue. My buddy got married there.

MahiMike 04-21-2020 10:07 AM

They closed the prison?

gblowfish 04-21-2020 10:08 AM

All these years living in KC and never went there. I'm sure it will re-open as a variant eventually.

nychief 04-21-2020 10:10 AM

This place has never been on my radar. Sorry to hear about any place going under, tho.

DJ's left nut 04-21-2020 10:13 AM

I went there about once a year before an occasional pops event at Kaufmann (i've seen Ben Folds a couple times there and they do movie screenings with symphony accompaniment like Bond flicks, Back to the Future, Indiana Jones, etc...)

It was a good, unique place. Menu changed up daily, I think. They made a damn fine scallop. I wouldn't say it was incredibly pricey; typical 'nice night out downtown' prices but not $100 steaks or anything.

Never like to see a unique concept close. It's a nice building and a good spot; someone will make a go of it there.

It shouldn't be a restaurant and a goddamn antique store. Waste of space in a building that huge.

It should be converted to apartments or a hotel or something.

Exactly...sort of weird seeing a lot of people act like it was some crazy expensive place.

mlyonsd 04-21-2020 08:31 PM

Looks like too cool of a building that someone wouldn't come in and try to start something new.

That's one of the things that makes it both unique and cool. My wife loved going there and walking around on the first level and looking at all the different stuff they had. And the restaurant upstairs has a really neat vibe and different rooms/styles.

The last thing in the world I hope happens to that building is turning it into more trendy expensive apartments.

You sound like a Johnson County yuppie asshole.

How many scented candles does your wife buy every month?

cooper barrett 04-22-2020 12:14 AM

Al least his wife doesn't lie about getting laid.... lives in a better craker box than you and doesn't have mom on her title of her car.

Looks like the Helzbergs are still going to own the building.

stanleychief 04-22-2020 10:38 PM

Webster House had amazing biscuits and gravy. I think their ingredients were locally sourced as much as possible, and thus drove up the price a bit. At least that was the story my waitress told us the first time. The building and location are cool. Both times I went, the service was pretty slow, and they weren't terribly busy. The shop on the first floor sold a lot of goods that felt like they belonged in a shop in Westport, but certainly not the Plaza.

My second time there, I went there with a couple from JoCo who would probably fit the description of yuppies. All the guy did was bitch about the price and scoff at the limited drink menu. There are a lot of yuppie places in that area, but I'm not sure I'd label Webster House that way. Maybe that was actually part of their problem.
