RIP Jim Steinman
Likely not a household name for some, likely huge name for others. Likely going to get a ton of 'who' posts.
But if you've ever simultaneously rolled your eyes and turned the volume up to a song, it was probably a Steinman song. For anyone who remembers in a moment what it means to be 'doubly blessed' <iframe width="800" height="448" src="https://www.youtube.com/embed/3QGMCSCFoKA" title="YouTube video player" frameborder="0" allow="accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture" allowfullscreen></iframe> <iframe width="800" height="448" src="https://www.youtube.com/embed/j8fHNdrZTSI" title="YouTube video player" frameborder="0" allow="accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture" allowfullscreen></iframe> <iframe width="800" height="448" src="https://www.youtube.com/embed/lcOxhH8N3Bo" title="YouTube video player" frameborder="0" allow="accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture" allowfullscreen></iframe> <iframe width="772" height="579" src="https://www.youtube.com/embed/ogoIxkPjRts" title="YouTube video player" frameborder="0" allow="accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture" allowfullscreen></iframe> |
Bat Out of Hell is one of the greatest albums ever. One of the few that I can listen to in its entirety; no shitty/filler songs.
RIP to a master of his craft. |
Who?
|
IIRC, Def Leppard was going to record Hysteria with him, but there was major conflict in the studio.
They had to wait almost a year(?) for the infamous Bob Rock to produce the album, because he had been suffering from exhaustion. RIP He definitely made a mark in the music industry. |
RIP...
He definitely had a unique over the top style to his songs. I liked the ones he did for the ‘Streets of Fire’ soundtrack |

Several years ago, my company did a lunch activity where we shared youtube videos that we enjoyed. I commented about this and said that everyone has probably seen it so I wouldn't share, and I was shocked that no one knew what I was talking about. So I shared it, and it was the hit of the party. |
Funny when you learn who writes a song. Now that it's in your mind, if you compare the Meat Loaf stuff to Tyler's "Total Eclipse of the Heart" to Air Supply's "Making Love Out Of Nothing At All", they all sound very similar.
It's like Neil Diamond, who wrote "I'm a Believer" but The Monkees made it popular... but you can hear Neil Diamond singing it in your mind. So many great songwriters who never really made it that big singing their own stuff. Like this dude. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_o...Burt_Bacharach |

Spoiler!
Re: Bacharach, I knew 'who' he was, but not a whole lot, until I saw Best Friend's Wedding. Which is basically a thinly-disguised Bacharach musical. That's what I think of when I hear his name these days. |

It gets weird when Meatloaf sings it's all coming back to me now.

Bat Out of Hell was the first rock album (well, 8-track) that I ever bought. I'd heard of Meat Loaf, and I was watching Saturday Night Live when he appeared on it. I was wowed.

I swear I thought that was an act from the original Gong Show with Chuck Barris. That would have fit in perfectly. |

It’s Walter Hills ode to 60s biker movies with a totally 80s aesthetic. So it’s a pretty strange combo. The Steinman songs are great, but definitely not 60s. Just typical 80s pop. It’s got a cool cast, cool vibe and good action for the era. |

And count me among those who loved Bat Out of Hell. I heard the tail end of the obit on NPR on Wednesday and at first thought that Meatloaf had passed. Nevertheless, I played most of the album last night. Those songs have been playing through my mind all day. Good stuff and getting older sucks, sucks, sucks. |
