Chief Northman 05-01-2021 12:48 PM

There’s that TE help.

RealSNR 05-01-2021 12:50 PM

Anything's better than Keizer

MahomesMagic 05-01-2021 12:51 PM

Looks like a safe option to boost roster depth.

If we’re taking a flyer on a TE I think I would have rather taken Yeboah

siberian khatru 05-01-2021 12:53 PM

His No. 1 strength is “team captain,” so there’s that

Dante84 05-01-2021 12:53 PM

Okay, maybe its because he's a TE, maybe its because he's white, maybe its because he's #87, maybe its because he has really good hands, maybe its because he played QB in highschool....

but he sooooorta gives me Kelce vibes?

TambaBerry 05-01-2021 12:54 PM

Dude is a poor mans Kelce I love it

Kiimo 05-01-2021 12:54 PM

Athletic TE that can cut. I like it.

You've got that right. Let Travis teach him, lock him in the weight room to put on more muscle and he'll be just fine.

RunKC 05-01-2021 12:56 PM

It’s not just his number. He looks so much like Kelce it’s insane.

He’s working the middle of the field, reading zone coverage to find the holes and has excellent lateral agility to separate from LB’s.

This is a home run pick IMO

Easy 6 05-01-2021 12:56 PM

Not super blown away to be honest, what I'm reading has him as a 6th-7th round prospect... but he apparently does have a knack for getting open as a zone buster and has experience splitting out wide

As SNR said, he's gotta be better than everyone but Kelce right?

Sassy Squatch 05-01-2021 12:56 PM

It also looks like he can get stronger and bigger as well. He only did 15 reps, this can be fixed...

Iconic 05-01-2021 01:01 PM

Looks like a guy who was too slow to play WR so they turned him into a TE. Not a bad pick and could work out well learning under the wing of Kelce.

MahomesKnows 05-01-2021 01:01 PM

Seems like he will finally fill that second TE spot that we never can find anyone to step into. I've got faith in this pick. Looks like he does a good job finding holes in coverage and based on his highlights he finishes runs well. I like it!

Chiefshrink 05-01-2021 01:02 PM

He is sneaky good. Great hands especially in traffic which is huge when you don't have elite athleticism. He finds a way to get open and runs hard through people. I like this pick.:thumb:

Disappointing considering Brevin Jordan who has way more upside was available when they picked the raw/developmental edge rusher at the end of the 4th round.

staylor26 05-01-2021 01:06 PM

The more I look into it, the more I like this pick.

I agree that he looks like a poor man’s Kelce.

What more could you ask for at TE2 with Kelcee’s age?

Definitely some similarities to Kelce. The only real knock is that he needs to get a little stronger. Good pick.

It’s about time they brought in a decent 2nd TE.

RunKC 05-01-2021 01:10 PM

Hey guys who does this prospect description remind you of? LMAO

Quote:

Gray is an above average route runner with enough quickness to separate from man coverage and the awareness to locate pockets in zone coverage. He's a natural hands catcher and he ran faster than expected at his pro day. He's a good blocker who fights to stay in position but he's light with shorter arms and he struggles to sustain blocks. -- Steve Muench

Kiimo 05-01-2021 01:11 PM

Travis Kelce is nearly two inches taller and 20 pounds heavier they aren't that comparable.

As a second TE he'll find openings I think. He's not a Kelce replacement down the line, he's complimentary

20 lbs is nothing, especially considering he’s shorter. He can pack that on in an offseason.

Kiimo 05-01-2021 01:14 PM

I just mean that his body type is not the same as Kelce. Finding Kelces in the draft is hard. He's rare

Starting to think we could have drafted Pitts, Chase, Sewell, and Parsons and he would find some way to be upset. Perhaps it's just a bad day.

I love this pick in the sense that we had to address TE#2 at some point with someone other than Bell and Keizer. We did that with someone who could be pretty decent.

He definitely has some skills, in Veach we trust

oldman 05-01-2021 01:28 PM

This. While it would be nice if he was the second coming of Kelce, that's just not realistic. As long as he is more productive as a pass catcher than what we have had at the #2 TE position for the last few years we will come out good drafting him.

Considering the recent lack of production the Chiefs have gotten from their TE2, if Gray can be comparable to the likes of Sean McGrath or Anthony Fasano, he'll be an upgrade to anyone they have had at that position in recent years.

heh. I think Demetrius Harris was the 2nd most productive TE the Chiefs have had in the last decade. Wrap your head around that.

Folks are comparing him to Travis but the funny thing is his physical traits and pro day numbers actually mirror George Kittle quite a bit :D .

The bottom line is this guy will be able to watch Trav work everyday and gain knowledge from him so it's gonna be very interesting to see how he develops.

Agreed.

He's kind of an H-Back type. I mean, I guess it'll be okay and give them another complementary weapon. I just don't especially feel too enamored with the pick. I'm trusting Reid on this one but until I see the product on the fiel I'm not getting excited about it.
