They'll figure it out soon enough, no worries

When will CP ever learn. Veach said HB will get an extension this offseason. If you seriously are questioning Veach you should be banned forever

Who are you complaining about?

I literally shared that they are far apart, which they are.

I’m sure it’ll be fine, just like Chris Jones last year.

RunKC 05-16-2021 09:58 AM

$21.7 million in cap space projected next year with Orlando Brown Jr and Tyrann Matheiu as our only major assets unsigned.

I think it would be best to get him another 3 year deal with a way out after year 2.

I’d imagine that Veach wants to extend Thornhill which means he’ll have 3 more years of cheap cap hits counting this year.

He’s got a few more years but then we will need to pay Sneed and Thornhill

neech 05-16-2021 10:09 AM

They will make up with each other be patient.

suzzer99 05-16-2021 10:15 AM

I assume he's going to want to be the highest paid safety at a minimum. And he deserves it.

Tyreek will need to be extended as well next offseason

Cutting Hitchens and Clark plus restructuring Mahomes bonus again will give us plenty of room.

No. We don't need to do that.

ThyKingdomCome15 05-16-2021 10:29 AM

I actually don't think they're that far apart. They just wanna take their time and get it right. You know HB would love to retire as a Chief and play out his career here.

It's just gonna take a minute. They have to figure out what to do with Frank Clark and Reed as well. Those will be two gaping holes if KC lets both walk next year (Frank getting cut.) Lotta big contracts coming up.

If Honey Badger walks next year I have full confidence in Veach drafting another gem.

If HB was 25 then yes. His age is what makes this tricky.

Hammock Parties 05-16-2021 10:41 AM

It might not be best to sign him long term. When little guys lose their speed things go south fast. He has a lot of miles.

If he plays well this year, maybe franchise tag him.

New World Order 05-16-2021 11:01 AM

Perfect scenario would be we have him for one more year then cut bait when he hits 30.

Not sure how he would handle a tag though. I'd prefer to avoid a long term deal.

Deberg_1990 05-16-2021 11:01 AM

I like the guy, but not sure I would break the bank for him, especially at his age.

If he leaves, then so be it. I’m not doubting Veach.

pugsnotdrugs19 05-16-2021 11:09 AM

Hate to say it but HB has quite a bit of leverage since we almost certainly may need the franchise tag for Orlando Brown.

I’d bet Tyrann wants to be the highest paid defender on the team and he has an argument to be that, it’s just the safety market doesn’t really show that to be reasonable.

IowaHawkeyeChief 05-16-2021 11:23 AM

'We have the QB... We can be smart with aging players. It's how the Pat's dominated for nearly 2 decades.

Jewish Rabbi 05-16-2021 11:25 AM

Can we gain any cap space by banning Mahomo from posting on CP?

Sounds like the same thing Chris Jones went through. Remember he quoted Bell?

All drama and irrelevant. It’ll get done.

I wouldn't be surprised if this is the issue more than the money per year.

Bob Dole 05-16-2021 11:47 AM

It’s going to be hilarious when they announce the signing tomorrow.

Highest paid defender on the team? Good luck on your next team, Mathieu.

Isn’t that what it has to be about though?

It’s an easy call to make him the highest paid safety. $15m is fine, $16m.

But I think knowing the kind of mentality HB has, knowing he’s the heart of the defense, I can easily see him saying he deserves more than Frank and Chris.

Well you theoretically could on a 3 year deal. First year cheap, second year high cap and then third year he’s cut with savings due to the structure of the contract.

I think they want to keep him a couple more years. He’s still got the juice

That is completely and utterly unrealistic.

The Chiefs aren't paying a safety in excess of $20 million dollars.

There's just no way that's going to happen in 2022.

If that’s the case....then bye. I’m not paying a safety $20 million a season. We can’t keep resetting the market every offseason with each position. Eventually it will catch up to us.

Wallcrawler 05-16-2021 12:15 PM

Id care about this more if he stopped with all his attention whoring on social media about it.

You know the deal. Take less and stay together, or **** off and go get your payday on a team that wins 4 games.

Pouting about your worth and recognition of it on twitter does nothing.

Sassy Squatch 05-16-2021 12:55 PM

That'd be a damn shame. First Team All Pro both his seasons here.

Titty Meat 05-16-2021 01:00 PM

I'm not giving a 5'9 safety who will be 30 major coin

I agree and I would not do that. My hunch is that is the hang-up though. Cause I don’t see them not being willing to pay him $15m AAV.

Bowser 05-16-2021 01:35 PM

He's playing the game as it benefits him, as he should. I'll pay more attention to this NEXT offseason, but as for now

kcclone 05-16-2021 02:04 PM

He’s at an age where you have to be very careful. You can’t afford to go big, long-term, with aging defenders IMO.

Where does any of this say that they are far apart?
Mathieu already has said publicly that he does not get involved in any of the negotiations. He said he will not even hear from his agent until the contract is done. That he has to stay out and away from contract stuff.

DaFace 05-16-2021 03:36 PM

I love Tyrann, but he's a low key drama queen. I'm not worried.

Valiant 05-16-2021 03:57 PM

Guy has been good for us. But this is where I like the belichek route for aging players not named Patrick.

I’d consider the deal if he dropped that dumbass Landlord nickname.

You don’t get to change horses midstream like that just because you feel like it

[QUOTE=DaFace;15676184]I love Tyrann, but he's a low key drama queen. I'm not worried.[/QUOTE

Yep. He seems like the type that once he gets something in his head (and his contract is), that he'll use it for motivation to ball out, rather than sulk and let the situation negatively affect his game. I know one thing for sure, if he gets a new deal, he damn sure won't skip the "voluntary" mini-camps and other functions, because he's a true leader. Not a Hobo Spirit posing as one.

Marcellus 05-16-2021 07:12 PM

Dude says whats on his mind at the time. I wouldn't read anything into what it means long term.

BossChief 05-16-2021 07:32 PM

Like I said in the thread I started on this topic a month or so ago, he’s small, not a blazing speed guy and has an injury history. He will likely be a quality defender well into his 30s because of his mental prep snd experience/instincts but once he loses a step, his value will drop significantly.

He will likely test free agency next offseason if he wants top dollar on a long term deal.

Sure sounds like he's staying out of the process by responding to random people's tweets about the contract situation expressing pessimism.

No!

JakeF 05-17-2021 01:02 AM

Mathieu will be 30 yrs old this year. Do you really want the Chiefs to give him a big contract that takes him to 35? This isn't a QB, it's a Safety. Once he loses his speed he is no longer the weapon he currently is.

Just bringing it up.

Yeah, Honeybadger gets up in his feels and becomes Honeybitch really easily.

I still remember his epic butthurt when Tyreek clowned him at Madden. Went full little girl. Lmao.

I can only imagine the tantrums and passive aggressive bitch behavior that those close to him have to endure when hes on his period.

Now you know why a 5'9 guy not only made it in the NFL but he's the best at the position.
