What kind of computer does the average CP'er use?
I'm curious. Did you build it yourself or did you buy it off the shelf?
If you built it yourself... why did you chose the components you did? If you bought it off the shelf... why did you chose the unit you did? Was it a budget buy for a tool you need or did you shell out for a boutique build? Do you know the specs of your computer (what CPU or video card (if any) you are using? ___ I built mine in 2013. It is an Intel Core i7 4770k on a Z97 motherboard. Running a Power Color Vega 56 (Power Color Red Dragon) and 32GB of memory. 500GB M.2 for my boot drive and just a 1TB drive for personal storage (which really has nothing but photos of my foster pups. When I built it... I had a cutting edge machine and I built it to be future proof. I originally had a 7790 video card in there but have upgraded a handful of times over the years to the Vega 56 I run now. I still use it more for gaming than anything else and it still handles its own. I can play games like Apex Legends at an average of 97 FPS on "medium". That said... its nearing the end of it's run as the heavy game machine in the house. |

that just sounds funny reading it :thumb: |
I used to build all of mine. Researching and gathering parts was fun but I tired of it and have no need for a full desktop any longer. For a very long time I just utilized my company laptop. I don't have that anymore so I just bought me a "budget" gaming laptop, not that I game much but it's powerful with a 17 inch 144hz screen. Lots of stuff drawing on the batter so battery life sucks balls but I'm plugged in mostly. I can turn all kinds of stuff off and stuff to get 5 hours. Key backlighting is red and red only which isn't ideal. I pushed GTAV full everything and it handled it like a champ. As well as Cities: Skylines. I'll probably end up purchasing Cyberpunk now. Hope it's been fixed up. Been having an issue with Office 2007 configuring itself every time I open it though it's a legit registered copy.

Still running the last one I built for myself about 8 years ago... i5-4590 with an AMD RX 570 4gb/256-bit and 16 gb ram. Still plenty fine in most games but it's definitely time for an upgrade. Built plenty of others in the interim for everyone else but just haven't treated myself. Waiting on AMD to catch up with the console demand so their prices drop back down to normal before I do another.

I kinda get it... but nothing pleases me more than having an actual CD of my favorite album, it ALWAYS sounds better on my early 2000s stereo with real wood built speakers than any kind of computer stuff IMO |
I use to build PC’s. But since I work in tech, I don’t want to **** with making tech work in my leisure time.
Ive used nothing but laptops for 20 years or so.always go for the big screen ones. 17 inch or so. More gaming builds although I don’t do gaming. Just want more Piwer and speed to keep up with my bandwidth. |
I have an octo-core amd system. Something like that. It's fast when not updating every little piece of software.
I use my Android phone for CP stuff. Much easier. |
I'm not a techy but I did once stay at a Holiday Inn. I'll be 71 in July but I've been on the internet since '93 and owned a online business form '93 to 2004 when I retired, BuccaneerRecords.com. We sold import CDs and videos, classic, metal and hard rock. I believe it was Macromedia Dreamweaver I bought and used to built my website and I did magazine advertising, mostly Goldmine, which was a record collector publication.
I'm now on my 5th computer. On Black Friday 2018 I bought this all-in-one at Best Buy for $499, I thought I did good. It still runs great and it was $829 at that time, now it's $699. https://pisces.bbystatic.com/image2/...0;maxWidth=550 Lenovo - IdeaCentre A540 24" Touch-Screen All-In-One - AMD Ryzen 3-Series - 8GB Memory - 256GB Solid State Drive - Black |
Have a gaming desktop I built in 2015 or so, upgraded video card at some point. MacBook pro 2017. Storage server and a couple raspberry pis.

What kind of computer does the average CP'er use?
Our laptop basically only has to function as an in between device to get things from phones and cameras to the external storage hard drive we keep for all of our videos and photos. Other than that it’s really only used for specialized things not easily done on the phone, but also not things that any off the shelf laptop can’t accomplish.

It was all pretty BASIC [punny] because the teachers really didn't know any more about computer architecture or programming than I did, really. But they let me futz around on it to my heart's content. Fairly rare for the late 70s, I'm sure. Probably had something to do with me being ADHD and a distraction in class as well. |

Running really old stuff...
AMD Phenom II 720B 8GB DDR2 Radeon 7850 Win10 It still works and is fine for the few games that I play. Want to upgrade to a Ryzen however not much need for it since I burned myself out on FPS a long time ago. |
My system is about six years old now. Did most of the build myself, under the close supervision of my IT buddy, whose instructions I followed to the letter. :D
3.50 gigahertz Intel Core i7-4770K Samsung SSD 850 EVO 1TB ASUSTeK COMPUTER INC. Z97-A Rev 1 motherboard 16K RAM NVIDIA GeForce GTX 1080 Still runs great and I haven't had any issues with it. Which is good, because I understand PC components are currently in short supply and ungodly expensive. |
I have two laptops, one for work and one personal. The personal one taps into AWS which has as much scalable computing power as I need, which is currently a development and production EC2 server and two RDS (development and production) instances.

I've been able to get to 4.4GHz with complete stability but the fan is SO ****ING LOUD. I recently had the opportunity to build a new rig (ie, I got hands on a 3070 but let my brother have it) but I decided to hold off. Even if I build a new system based on the 11th gen i9 11900k (I wouldn't... I would build an i5 11600k if I was going to build a modern rig today), I would "only" be getting a performance increase of 41% in a span of 8 years. I was coming from a Core 2 Duo E8400 when I upgraded to the 4770k and that was a 72% performance increase in a span of 5 years. It just doesn't seem worth it to me to upgrade yet. Perhaps the 12th gen Intel processor is gonna give me that performance bump of 70% I'm looking for. As it stands... my rig can still play any game I throw at it. Even at 3440x1440. |

I have a 2018 MacBook Pro
There is a brand new one on my desk at the office, but I just can't make the switch yet for some reason. |
Old ones. Both our desktop and laptop are Dells with I-3 and 6 Gb of RAM. I upgraded the laptop to Windows 10 last year because none of the new tax software won't run on Windows 7. I use the desktop for most of my heavy duty writing because the laptop keyboard is too small. I'm too cheap to buy new ones until one crashes. We had Dell laptops with docking stations since the mid-90s because managers were on 24 hour call and I just got used to them. I have to use a stylus if I have to use my cell for anything besides dialing.
|
i have a used 17" Dell laptop I bought for $250 about 3 years ago after I accidentally spilled a whole 16 oz coffee on my HP and listened to it sizzle and die.
Im very happy with it as the former owner put a 500 Gig Samsung SSD in it, the same drive I upgraded my HP to before it met its untimely death. I now have an external 500 SSD drive for my backup. I'm not a gamer so I do not need an ultra fast processer like an NVIDIA set. |

My HP work laptop at Amazon is a 5 time hand me down that sucks. Probably at least 5 years old. So much security software and other shit on it specific to Amazon.
Its constantly wanting to isolate my computer until I upgrade or update shit every Sunday I come back to work for the week. We also use tons of excel tools for calculations that it is a resource hog. I may have 4-5 different excel tools and trackers open at once. I hate it. |

Gigabyte Z490 Aurus Elite Motherboard RTX 3080 Founders Edition 2 500gb NVME drives 2 1tb ssd drives 3tb old mechanical hard drive With the chip shortage it took me 3 months of trying to get the video card. Currently running a Lenovo Thinkpad X1 Carbon I bought on sale from hotel room right after Mahomes broke one off in Houston.
I'm too lazy to look up the specs but it's a lot faster than the other ones I've been running. I have it run a docking station at both home and the office because who does anything on a laptop keyboard unless they're actually traveling? At home I have a 32" screen and at the office I have 2x 22" screen. I probably need to find some other monitors that will fit at the office, but I'm lazy. I bought some Surface bluetooth and mouse sets for both places and damn, they are nice. I was sick of giant ****ing keyboards because at the office they just sit on top of the desk. They have a nice feel, don't take much room, and have a clean utilitarian look to them. I'd definitely recommend those. https://images-na.ssl-images-amazon....AC_SL1200_.jpg https://images-na.ssl-images-amazon....AC_SL1200_.jpg |
