I was in the Air Force on flight status. I knew many who died in plane crashes/accidents. My roommate in flight training was killed in an F15E accident. He left behind a wife and kids. Buried in Arlington.
ETA - He was from Lee's Summit (I believe.) He was a Chiefs fan too. https://cdm16412.contentdm.oclc.org/...2coll4/id/157/ https://www.flyingmag.com/pilots-pla...cting-800-mph/ The first link is a picture of Dennis and a short description of his position/unit etc. The second link has a video where the pilot describes what occurred in the crash that killed Dennis. |
My grandfather killed 37 German pilots in WW2. Worst mechanic the Luftwaffe ever had.
RIP Grandpa |
I had a great uncle who served in the Army in WWII. He was always a lot of fun, but was never w/o his beer. My grandmother used to worry a lot about him and would take him food, but he usually preferred his beer over food.
A couple of years ago, my mom and dad shared a letter that he had written to my grandmother. He talked a lot about what life was like on the front lines of the war, describing seeing his friends dying and himself killing the enemy. At that moment I understood why he had become an alcoholic. He went through hell and survived while many of his friends did not. RIP to my Uncle J.J. and thank you and millions of others for your selfless service to our country. |
A crisp salute goes out to all of you vets from any era out there
The only man I know who died as a result of war, was my uncle Tommy... died 5 years ago as a result of complications from Agent Orange exposure A three time Bronze Star Infantryman in Vietnam RIP |

Seriously. I’m saddened that 1 of 4 posts is a joke post. But, sigh; that’s CP! /insert canned laughter. Enjoy your long weekend..... /K Harris.... In before DC move!!!! |
Three friends with whom I served died in Afghanistan or Iraq - Jaimie Leonard, Bill Wood and Hans Kurth. It’s been many years since their deaths, but they still resonate. May they rest in peace.

I don't have anyone close that died in service. But have had several that served.
Big tip of the cap to all that have served, and certainly condolences for the killed and wounded. |

These guys. Picture attachments suck for some reason.
The youngest was 19 killed in action only six days into his first combat deployment, the last one was on his fourth at 29 years old. A few years ago I wrote about my friend Sean Sims here on CP. This is the only day of the year I wear a memorial bracelet, and today I’m wearing SFC Danny Metcalfe’s. Have fun today, guys. Seriously— do something you enjoy, and maybe call or text a friend you haven’t reached out to in awhile. Life is for living! |

Weep not that these men/women died. Rejoice that they lived. |

He was killed by a suicide vehicle bomb. Right after his birthday. 12 years ago. He would be 49 today. In our time we’d play basketball, watch college football, he was a Razorback’s fan, and the start of south park. He was funny, and made people happy around him. His son Andrew is playing football in college north of St. Louis. Winning some OL awards too as I hear. I had planned to watch him play last year. But will keep an eye on him for the chiefs interests of course. Then there’s Harry, Gabe, Evan, Thomas, and 4 Iraqi police officers we were training. All deserving of attention, reflection and memorialized more than I can do right now. |

Thanks for sharing. These heroes are not numbers. They were people with family, friends and lives planned. Brings home their sacrifice for the country. |

Tom Surdyke was one of three members of the West Point Class of 2019 who died during their four years there. Passed away saving a life, albeit not in a military capacity. |

Bill volunteered to be a commander of a California National Guard unit after they had experienced some problems. Good, solid soldier. Tough, focused, but always down to earth and real. Jaimie was smart, funny, talented and was clearly headed places. Tenacious when she needed to be. She was the kind of person that made the room brighter the instant she entered. Hans was young and enthusiastic. It was contagious. We deployed to Kosovo together and then I left the division before they deployed less than a year later to Iraq. He died while on patrol during that deployment. It’s hard to fathom even all these years later. Young, bright people who were taken from this world too soon. I hope their families found some peace and solace. |

I've never lost anyone but I've had and still have a bunch of family in the military.
Cool thing that happened this morning though from my brother who was 8 years Navy and 2 National Gaurd. I was planning to follow in his footsteps but decided I would ride bulls for a few years after highschool before enlisting and ended up with to much broken shit to go. Anyways, I woke up this morning and had extra money in my bank account. With all the stupid shit I got going on he said he wanted to pay my health insurance for a month. Asshole, made me cry at 5:30 this morning. God bless him and to all of those who served. Made me think of this. And screw you if you don't like my "twangy" shit. <iframe width="727" height="409" src="https://www.youtube.com/embed/wSFWdN-gtOQ" title="YouTube video player" frameborder="0" allow="accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture" allowfullscreen></iframe> |
