J. Gilbert's Is It any good?

Is it?

TLO 06-03-2021 09:09 PM

I have no idea

Pants 06-03-2021 09:25 PM

One of my favorite places in KC. It's very, very good.

hometeam 06-03-2021 09:26 PM

I looked at the website and they give you ice cream on a piece of wood so its got that going for it

Titty Meat 06-03-2021 09:38 PM

One of the best in KC especially since Plaza III, Ruth Chris and Mortons are all gone

petegz28 06-03-2021 09:39 PM

Is good. There is better but it is good.

|Zach| 06-03-2021 09:45 PM

They do a good job. Consistent food and service wise I have found.

Bill Brasky 06-03-2021 09:46 PM

I haven’t been there in 15 years, but it was a miserable experience when I went. Food, service, everything was bad. This is the one of Metcalf (Is there more than 1?). It sounds like other people liked it, so maybe they got their shit together finally.

Edit: I think the best steak in KC was the off menu strip at Houston’s before they closed.

Do you clean the bathrooms there?

BWillie 06-03-2021 09:48 PM

Yes. 4 out of 5 stars.

|Zach| 06-03-2021 09:48 PM

You are probably going to go for steak if you go but they do seafood pretty well I enjoy their salmon.

philfree 06-03-2021 09:54 PM

The wife and I traveling through and staying the night on are way to pick up our grandsons so they can spend the summer with us. Some one told her it was a good place. I doubt I'll be able to drive past Jack Stack though but I was curious. Are the restaurants fully open now or are they still covidided?

Jackstack: best sides in KC. Hardly the best BBQ in KC.

Just my opinion, and I get BBQ all the time so maybe that's the reason for it, but I would pick J. Gilberts over Jack Stack 10 out 10 times.

philfree 06-03-2021 10:12 PM

Interesting reviews. I appreciate it.

COVID stuff is over in KC. Might see a few masks but won’t need one yourself.

SPchief 06-03-2021 10:37 PM

Get the blue cheese chips as an app. Steaks are always on point. Seafood is great. Don't skip the chocolate cake

oldman 06-03-2021 10:59 PM

It's one of our favorites for steak, but with us just coming out the the COVID mess I don't know how good it is today. FTR, there's probably 10 places for BBQ better than Jack Stacks. Overpriced and overrated. The only thing it has going for it is that it's in nicer locations than most of the good stuff.

Save your money FOR majestic and get something wicked awesome like a 30-day dry aged prime rib eye.

Best steakhouse dinner I've ever had.

I feel like I'm the only one who doesn't like dry aged steak (although I've never had dry aged prime rib).

I've tried it 4 different times. I just don't get it. Wet aged is waaay better but dry aged is oh so fancy.

First time I've had it - it wasn't prime rib, it was some kind of cut I've never had anywhere else, they called it a prime rib eye.

Everything there is ****ing amazing. I'm going to propose to my wife there.

Pants 06-04-2021 10:21 AM

Crazy how tastes vary. I've been to Majestic probably 4 times and I'm always coming away unimpressed. Again, I would chose J Gilbert's over Majestic 10/10 times.

The basement is nice with the music, but the food itself just doesn't do it for me.

Bearcat 06-04-2021 11:32 AM

I think the Majestic was better years ago before the closing and reopening, but mostly because they took away a couple of my favorites... I think it's still excellent overall though, and the combo of their food, wine selection, and jazz club is hard to beat. I'm biased though, since I worked there long ago and it was by far my favorite restaurant job.

I've never been to J Gilbert's, but should probably try it sometime.

We'll be staying in Overland Park so what's the best BBQ place near 435 & Metcalf?

How do you all feel about Sullivan's

Just go to KC Joe's several times.

And I guess Q39.

And it's not BBQ, but the other place I lead people to is Twisted Fresh for their mahi mahi tacos... there's one in OP somewhere.

There's a Q39 about 115th and Antioch, a Joe's at 119th, just a block or so east of I-35 and another one at about 117th and Roe. If you like dry rub, there's a place called Brobecks on Indian Creek Parkway, just off Roe. If you want old school, there's a Gates about 104th and Stateline Rd.. Just my opinion, but Joe's has the best ribs around and the brisket at Gates is hard to beat.

philfree 06-04-2021 01:41 PM

We're about to peel out and head that way. Thanks for the feedback!

I recently discovered Brobecks. Holy **** is it good. Smoked meat doesn't get much better than that.

You buy 3 individuals ribs from them (they always throw an extra 1 or 2) for like $8, get some fries, and it's a great meal for a very reasonable amount of money.

Joe's is still undefeated, IMO. Just sucks that unless you go there at an awkward time, you're going to be waiting in line for a while.

BWillie 06-04-2021 02:33 PM

Stockhill used to have the best Wagyu steak in the city until they sold it to some other company. It still retains it's name but the food - specifically the steak - is no where near as good.

Mowing their lawns 5 times a week and eating dinner at 630pm. Nothing white people love to do more than that.

Yeah and never ever get their fake burnt ends. Well unless your some freak who loves the Heimlich performed on you.

I still morn the loss of Jimmy and Mary’s Steakhouse when it closed in the 90's. One of the great KC steakhouses.

burt 06-04-2021 04:37 PM

Man....lot of Jack Stack hate here! I still enjoy it. But I enjoy most BBQ....just some more than others.

I've seen Harps in Raytowna Beach getting some love online...I gotta give it a go when I can.

I ate at the one in McLean VA numerous times and always an excellent meal.

I went about 10 years ago on a business dinner and it was ****ing fabulous. One of the best steaks I'd ever had. Great atmosphere too. It was a great drunken fun night.

Smokehouse beans are the truth. Better than JS but only in the northland. I like JS beef ribs last time I was there.

For pit beans hit up McGonigal's it's worth the drive

philfree 06-04-2021 09:26 PM

The wife insisted on Jack Stack. I had some Burnt End Stew and a Smokin' Russ with a couple ribs added on. Also had some Jalapeno Cornbread as an app. It was all good but I prefer a little sweeter sauce then theirs. I'm still stuffed hours later. Maybe on the way back through we'll try J. Jay Gilbert's.

Titty Meat 06-04-2021 10:09 PM

Not really hate. Jack Stack just focuses on the dining experience over BBQ quality. Their meats are just OK compared to dozens of other BBQ places in the metro. Their sides are really incredible. They deserve credit for that. But they're more about the sit-down restaurant experience. Tourist BBQ.

I received an email from BBQ Box and it had a list of 20 BBQ places you need to try. It listed Harp Barbecue in Raytown. Says it's only open one day a week. What does CP have to say about this joint?
