FAKE PUNT PASSING PAYS BIG!

HemiEd 11-23-2021 11:30 AM

He is doing a good job because we don't hear about him. :thumb:

Winchester actually passed Kendall Gammon last week in games for the Chiefs - 106 to 107.

Gammon will always be my OG long-snapper though. Hard to believe this is Winchester's 7th season. I recall some sort of training camp competition with him his first year in KC. Seems to have been the right choice...

EDIT: Ah yes, the Winchester/Andrew East wars of 2015. It appears East eventually played 3 games for the Redskins in '18 but has otherwise been cut about a dozen times in his career.

7th season!?!? Jeez. I thought he was a rook. Actually I thought Kendall Gammon was still our Long Snapper.

Hoover 11-23-2021 11:35 AM

Boom!

Glad we kept him over Shawn Johnson’s husband

DaFace 11-23-2021 11:36 AM

Mr_Tomahawk 11-23-2021 11:38 AM

Oh thank god!

TinyEvel 11-23-2021 11:39 AM

Dude must be solid, he was third man to down the pooch punt after Allegretti and Townsend.

Actually, I'm really digging Special Teams these past few games, lots of great plays. They are shaping up to be quite (removes sunglasses) special.

Let me really blow your mind: Were you aware that we had someone named Thomas Gafford doing that job for the 7 years in between Gammon and Winchester?

I have absolutely no recollection of that name. At all.

I have a confession. I was the Chiefs long Snapper from 2008 - 2015

Dunerdr 11-23-2021 11:49 AM

A big extension for a big buck hunter!

Dante84 11-23-2021 11:52 AM

Had to re-sign him.

He's our ACE long-snapper.

mililo4cpa 11-23-2021 11:55 AM

And I was just having the "we should really think about extending James Winchester" conversation with my football buddies the other day

Coincidence.....I think not!

So from 2000 to 2023 we'll have 3 long-snappers....EXCEPT THERE'S ANOTHER!!

J.P. Darche, the Chiefs long-snapper for one season in 2007. He then went to Med School at KU and is now a Chiefs team physician (and evidently goes by Jean-Phillipe now since it sounds more boss).

The world is weird.

Don't forget Drew Scott signed by the Chiefs back in July when Winchester was put on the Covid list.

Drew was released four days later and never played an actual in-game snap. But still...

I wouldnt think we would have to give a record breaking contract to a Long Snapper?

The guy is good but we cant keep signing everyone to highest paid at their position contracts. Can we? Maybe we can...

Long snappers are really important because if you don't have a long snapper the ball just sits there and you get lots of delay of game penalties.

I remember a few years back when his father was murdered. The young man showed a lot of poise and grace at the time. Happy for him and his family that he’s been resigned with a good contract. He’s a good player and deserves it.

Does anyone have access to the PFF grades for Winchester and Kendall Gammon? Very interested in knowing their average launch angles, average velocity, and location variability percentiles. I would love to put together a spreadsheet to prove out who was better. Also, I would like to know which one has a bigger dick.

I was at Winchester's first game as a Chief. Away at Houston. I was right behind their bench and a man in a Winchester jersey came by and was eyeing the players ahead of the game along with his wife. Naturally I figured these were his parents and struck up a conversation as I knew who James was given that CP hyperfocuses on the minutia of training camp. I then got an amazing view of a father who was so emotional that his son was about to play in the NFL. He was boasting and waxing about his son and how Reid said he was athletic enough to get some snaps on offense. He was so proud and it was so touching and genuine.

I can't believe not very long after he suffered that fate. But that day he was as proud as any father could be and I've kept that with me ever since.

Good for James.

Do all teams carry a guy specifically for long snapping? I mean, can Winchester play center or any other Oline position?

Every team has a long snapper. Been that way for awhile. Giving him $10K more a game to avoid a bad snap seems like good money well spent. Especially when compared to…. Clark. How much we paying him per game?

Bill Belichick is a cheater and a fraud, but he once gave a dissertation in a press conference about how blocking for a long snapper is very different than other types of blocking, and that (along with larger roster sizes and the desirability of having a special teams unit practicing together all day) is why long snapping became a dedicated position. He said it was also because if the long snapper played another position and then got injured, it created problems for two units.

Well. NFL long snappers are amazing at their 1 job for sure. How often do you see them make a mistake? Not very often.

In Madden one year I made Gafford the MVP and rushing leader of the NFL. He was listed as a fullback in the game so I made him the starting RB. I tweeted Gafford with the screenshot of him winning MVP and all his crazy rushinh stats. He didn't care lol

ROFL

Well done.

oldman 11-24-2021 10:05 AM

I don't have any problem paying the guy a few more bucks. While his agent said he's now the highest paid LS in the league, I doubt that his contract will break the bank. That long snap is a little harder than you think and he's often one of the 1st guys downfield on a punt.

InChiefsHeaven 11-24-2021 11:26 AM

Being the highest paid long snapper probably still only costs like a case of Natty Light and a back of cool ranch doritos...I'm sure the Chiefs can afford it. Good on him, he deserves it.

JakeF 11-24-2021 04:25 PM

Highest paid long snapper before Winchester's new contract was is 1.2m per yr. Gotta figure that Winchester is making around 1.5-1.75m per yr or so.
