***Official Border War Showdown Returns Thread***

does anyone care?

Simply Red 12-08-2021 09:49 AM

no, glad to help!

Bowser 12-08-2021 09:52 AM

Only the people that will tune in to watch KU beat Mizzou by 40+ (because you know Self is going to pour it on, especially in AFH).

Bearcat 12-08-2021 09:52 AM

Wasted spot on Kansas' schedule for the next 6 years, or maybe a strategic December bye.

Guess you can't play top 110 teams like Iona and North Texas every game.

At least there's conference pride!

That should get things started. :D

KCUnited 12-08-2021 09:55 AM

I didn't think UMKC played KU this year

blake5676 12-08-2021 10:00 AM

This might have mattered and been more fun if they'd have not let the rivalry die for the past 10 years before finally rescheduling.

Or....if Mizzou wasn't so bad over the last decade with Kermit and Cuonzo that they routinely lost to the likes of UMKC and Lipscomb.

I haven't watched an entire CBB game, including Mizzou, in probably 5 years. In a way it makes me sad but I also haven't felt like I'm missing out on much either. Sigh. Theses KU-MU games were fun for most of my life but all good things come to an end I suppose.

My prediction for the game (and I can't even name two starters on either team): KU wins 83-52.

I remember the last actual game where mizzou was up and the refs put a quick stop to that shit at AFH

I don't think any actually cares anymore

I enjoy the fact that Mizzou will lower the KU strength of schedule

BWillie 12-08-2021 10:14 AM

I do. There is no reason these teams shouldn't play each other every year. Fan bases hate each other. Game should be played. And we'll be competitive in footbawl soont!

Red Dawg 12-08-2021 10:33 AM

KU going to crush them. Not even a game.

duncan_idaho 12-08-2021 10:50 AM

I'll be watching and, for the first time in my life in this matchup, rooting for kU to thoroughly demolish Missouri.

If it's bad enough, Mizzou will move on from CuonzNO this season despite the price tag (more on that below). And because it's Mizzou basketball, probably make a not-great hire.

How bad did hiring Kermit the Frog as Mizzou's coach screw things up? So badly the AD gave Martin a golden ticket simply for making the NCAA tournament (despite it being well-known that Michael and Jontay Porter would be switching to Mizzou after Romar got fired at Washington). Martin's buyout is $6M, and he can't be fire "without cause" before May 1.

A completely embarrassing loss to kU would be helpful in motivating those with big pocket books who care to write some checks to make him go away.

And from there? Who knows. Maybe they hire a hoops version of Eliah Drinkwitz and it takes off quickly. Maybe they hire another flawed and doomed-to-failure coach. IDK.

But it would at least generate some hope, of which there currently is none.

Heh, it's been pretty light this year anyway... granted, they would have to play Gonzaga 3 times to even out playing Missouri once.

So, I used to think that.

Before this year, I was on a Zoom Call with KU students that were working to continue the student org I started about 10 years ago (oh god). B-ball came up because KU, and I mentioned the Mizzou matchup, and the students all looked at me blankly.

During KU-Mizzou's last matchup my freshman year in 2012 (which brought a crazed, unhinged energy throughout campus that was matched only by our matchup with Kentucky my senior year). The camping before the Mizzou game was legendary, a frat group notoriously lost their spot and there were posters all throughout campus. But I realized in my call that the freshman I was talking to were eight in our last matchup. I may as well have been talking about KU matching up with Boise St, the match just wasn't significant at all.

Buuuuut. Something has happened since. There were students already camping at AFH since Tuesday and people are comparing it to our last home matchup vs. Kentucky. I'm not sure if Greek life has worked to build up the matchup, but the energy on KU's campus has absolutely exceeded our KSU matchups and has absolutely exceeded my expectations so far.

POND_OF_RED 12-08-2021 12:50 PM

Maybe they’re just trying to become the vintage hipsters of hating Mizzou. Once they see them play on the court, they’ll realize that they’re getting fired up to watch a special Olympics team.

I know the "scared" thing is something fun to say on the internet, but looking back it's pretty hilarious (it was pretty funny at the time, too).

I mean, Mizzou lost to Florida by 30 in their first year in the SEC and that was only a couple years before they started losing to UMKC. Added to the fact that I'm sure was stated a thousand times 10 years ago, that Self has always put a lot of effort into scheduling some great early season games each year and its clear they didn't want to take such a hit from strength of schedule.

Thanks for the laugh though, it brought back a memory from when the rivalry and all the stupid shit we said about it seemed to matter!

It's horrible. A gazillion fouls. Low scoring games. Tons of bad players.

The only thing it has over the NBA is the crowd energy.

Other than that it's one of, if not the worst, sports products in America.

I definitely like that KU’s stars are locals. They were probably in junior high the last time the teams played for real. This game might actually mean something to them unlike the other players.

LOL.... so I take it the theory here is that Kansas and its fans are arrogant assholes who take themselves and basketball way too seriously........ until they release a fun bottle of wine to poke fun at an otherwise shit year, then it's oh my, could you even imagine if a Real Blue Blood did such a thing, my heavens!

Because I assume you're not reeruned enough to believe Kansas is actually taking pride and raising banners for what's clearly a lighthearted joke.

I'll be sure to raise a pinky when I open the bottle, as the Real Blue Bloods would. LMAO

The two schools should do a combined Football-Basketball challenge.

Add the scores of both games together to decide the winner. Would be hilarious if both schools took it seriously and ran the score up as much as possible.

Most KU fans I know are not joking in anyway when they try to claim 2020 as a championship year so I’m sorry that I can’t interpret why you wasted your money on that wine without actually knowing your personality. Seems like you know some pretty pretentious people!

I know at least a few fans who take Kansas basketball far too seriously and I've never seen them mention 2020 one way or another, besides comments like "damnit, that could have been our year!"

I bought it because I have championship bottles for the 2015 Royals and 2019 Chiefs and thought it was ****ing hilarious to add it to the collection.

Of all the time I've laughed at how much Missouri fans celebrate Kansas losses, to the point of watching rival games and rooting for their opponent like Missouri is actually winning something....... I really did enjoy watching the 2nd half of that one.

It’s just so tough because in 2012 there was just so much material to ignite these threads. Anymore I don’t even know where to start. Folks in here have taken swings but even that trash talk is at least 5 years from its sell by date. The lack of rivalry games/topics/shared conference or even competitiveness in the same sport and our shared Super Bowl Championship really takes a lot of piss out of it.

Lzen 12-08-2021 08:29 PM

I just wonder if those MU fans that are trashing college hoops would be that way if their basketball team was doing well. Seems like sour grapes more than anything.

That was probably the luckiest snub any team has ever received looking back at that year in hindsight. I think that Mizzou trashing of McFadden and Arkansas opened some eyes in the SEC. Without that game who knows if they would have thrown us a lifeline. We could have been in the newly formed AAC with all the other leftovers if we never had the chance to prove ourselves to the SEC that year.

Even Gregory Hines couldn't tapdance around that loss like a beaker.

comochiefsfan 12-08-2021 09:40 PM

Another thing about the state of the rivalry now is that Kansas is on the verge of becoming a mid-major school.

Not sure what Mizzou has to gain from continuing to play this game long term other than for nostalgia.

Eventually playing kU in any sport will be like playing Missouri State. Nothing to gain and an awful lot to lose.

That year was basically 2014/2015 Royals levels of "is this really happening?!?" for me.... granted, Kansas football wasn't the complete dumpster fire it is now, having gone to a few bowl games in prior seasons and sticking around .500 for several seasons. But, it's not something I religiously watched, either.

So, personally the loss wasn't deep-in-the-pit-of-my-stomach bad, like the '97 Broncos, the no punt game, Kansas/Syracuse... and then they get the Orange Bowl bid, so it was pretty quickly forgotten.

Granted, it's also been a decade and a half, so that's probably lighter than the reality back then (but still not nearly as bad as those other losses).

Not sure I could endure watching any more of whatever it is Missouri is playing on the court. It's brutally bad.

I mean it's just reality.

How often do you see SEC or B1G schools have annual games against Mountain West or MAC teams?

I would have no problem with the games continuing. It's been a fun series historically. But from a logistical standpoint it just won't make much sense for Mizzou much longer.

Hope Self knows what he’s doing in re-starting this series. For me, as long as MU’s program remains such a joke, there’s really no benefit at all to playing these games for KU. The games will be resume building opportunities for MU (although they are so bad this year, it won’t matter either way), but this is little different than scheduling a game against Towson or UTEP for KU.
