Do you have stored away ?
A survival kit, something for a catastrophic event that could last for a week or two, maybe into a month.
Let's list the things one would need to have on hand, things maybe not listed on the basic survivor's list. |
I don't have a damned thing and I'm in a major metro area.
If society collapsed, I would be truly ****ed. |
Hand lotion, old nudie magazines and Kleenex tissues.

25 cases of bottled water, 8 weeks food supply, a couple month's food for my pets, 1000 ounces of silver, an FN 509 Tactical, and ten 50-round boxes of ammo. I'd consider that the bare minimum. If things go completely to shit, I've at least got a couple months to figure things out.
|
Yeah I have a bugout bag, its a Fox Tactical backpack
Tarp Huge hank 550 cord 4 tent stakes Sleeping bag Fire kit with two flint steels and a 5 pack of Bics Ziploc bag full of vaseline soaked cotton balls and a few tea candles Sawyer mini water filter Army canteen with fitted metal cup Vietnam era mess kit Fully stocked fishing kit Fully stocked first aid kit 5 Mountain House freeze dried meals, with plenty of room for more food Hatchet Folding saw Handheld flashlight and headband light with spare batteries for both Bug spray And one change of clothes, actually need to get in there and replace the summer clothes with something warm And thats it, off the top of my head |
Yep. Got a "bugout bag" for each of us, 1-3 months of food, depending on how much you eat each day, for 3 people, plenty of ammo and firearms. Emergency shelter, A.K.A. a tent, first aid kits, emergency water purification, A.K.A. pot to boil water......
That would last us long enough to get to our lake property on foot if we had too.... |

I got a shotgun, a rifle and a 4 wheel drive.
|
I could probably make it a while.
Plenty of guns and ammo, we have ample food, but have some survival food buckets If gas and electric was out, I'd just head home. My Dad have been waiting for that moment for decades now. |

Agreed. Even when there’s a hurricane coming, which we know about a whole week prior to its arrival, the store shelves look barren and highways out of the city are jammed. It wouldn’t matter what sort of disaster: domestic attack, civil war, weather cataclysm, zombie apocalypse.. I probably wouldn’t last long. |

Agreed here as well. I’m pretty much all in on this civilization thing we’ve got going on. If it goes down, I’m most likely going down with it. At present, I think I’m OK with that. Though I do wonder what sort of post-apocalyptic survivor I’d be. Would I be a part of the mass deaths in the first wave? Would I hang on for a few months before the marauders or disease caught me? Would I totally kick ass and become the new King of a rebuilt society? Hopefully I never find out! |
1000 gallon water tank + well that I can use
500 gallon propane tank that I only use to fuel my 22kw generator Enough ammo Multiple freezers full of mostly meat. A lot of canned food too. Deer and elk in my yard everyday.. I think I could outlive a few. |

I used to keep a bug out bag ready with a water filter straw a few thousand rounds of .22lr a papoose break down .22lr rifle and a few other misc. things. Plus my bow would go.

You got to have toilet paper on hand, over the counter medications, people who take prescriptions, you need to have somethings stocked up. There are just so many things that you need to get by with.
|
We have infinite water and at least 6 months food stored.
When we run out of that I will put down one of thousands of cattle surrounding our farm. I’ll visit Bueh’s house when I want to eat gourmet. |
I’m buying one of the Swiss Suicide Pods and recoding the nitrogen levels. I’ll just wait it out in one of those with some twinkies and beef jerky nearby if I need some nourishment. If some murderous cretin or zombie comes by hopefully they think I’m dead, but even if they do end up opening up and killing me, at least with the nitrogen I’ll probably see it as getting eaten by a dragon or something cooler than my actual death.

Graveyards have plenty of underground bunkers if you're not near a Missouri cave.

I have enough ammo to get what I need

You see, this approach will become the norm of people that have nothing! When people are desperate, they will retort to whatever means they can to survive. People who have planned will become a target for people who do not have. |

All I need Is my brain and my hands baby

Tons of 'survival' equipment. 4WD vehicle and access to rural land that is easily defendable and full of furry animals and water.
|
A geomagnetic storm is going to wipe out solar panels for anybody that has her house rigged up so that's something to think about.
If one was heading our way from the sun we would have a day's notice to properly unhook all powered supply items in your house. If you have generators you can run for a while providing you have the fuel supplies to last. |
Do you want to know what I have in my house, truck, car, wife’s car, work shop, barn, parent’s house, farm house, barn at the farm house?
I also have stuff in deer blinds too, but it is mostly just a supplement to my other kits I have |

Nothing but stuff for 3 or 4 days to handle a power outage or bad snow.
I figure if everything really does goes into the dump i don't want to prolong the pain. I'm not a guy who could really help rebuild the world. I could crank out some kids if the population is gone, but that's about it. |

Aren't you worried about the striker long term? |
I live in an area with earthquakes and extreme weather. I freely admit I don’t have everything I need but I am also in a more rural area with several acres of property. I should get a generator to run my well but I have a couple of wood burning stoves for heat. They help lower the gas bill.
I have grocery staples for roughly 2 weeks, plenty of firearms and ammunition, tarps, ropes, gasoline and other equipment. There are some good books on Amazon about disaster prep and I am slowly accumulating/acquiring what I would need for an earthquake that would mess things up for a couple of weeks. I don’t really have a bug out bag because in my situation, what’s the point? I’m far enough away from the mainland that political upheaval is not as likely to reach us. If it does, I think I’m better off staying put than trying to go somewhere. My state has the lowest population density in the US and one of the lowest population densities in the world so there’s room but it would be really tough to live off the land here. On the other hand, I have a good network of friends. We can support one another and trade for things we need. As one example, I usually get a cord of wood delivered each fall. The guy comes by in mid October usually. This year he’s super busy and way behind. This year we’ve had severe cold quite early so my wife and I put the word out and very quickly friends came through. |

Meh. You could be sitting on decades of supplies, but it's still going to require a shitload of luck just to survive if it really does hit the fan. You can't really properly prepare for something that unexpected. Odds get exponentially worse the more family you have to protect and provide for. Bug out bag and weapons be damned, you're still probably gonna die soon.

I replaced the striker with an Apex, though I never had a problem with the original. |
This store lived close to you?

My source would be grocery store shelves whenever it's supposed to snow. I mean, maybe you are preparing for a nuclear bomb, in which case good luck! |

When we lived in Hollywood Hills the plan was to have two enduro bikes and backpacks with the necessary things to get out of the LA area in case of massive earthquake or a dirty bomb, etc.
In Santa Monica it was similar but with a Zodiac type inflatable (much easier to escape by sea than through the freeway system) Now in the suburbs elsewhere in CA, it's not as much for me about guns riots etc, it's earthquakes, blackouts, and fires. So, water and food, a generator, but also simple backpack with water and MREs and the small stuff. Mountainbikes. A camper. |
Closet full to the top with toilet paper
|
The smartest thing to have on hand is fishing supplies. You can always feed yourself from a river/lake/pond. Thinking you're going to go out and harvest meat is insane. If you kill a deer you're going to eat for a couple days and then you have a pile of rotting meat.
and having gold and silver is ****ing stupid. In a true survival mode who in the hell is going to give you food for a silver coin. |

I should. Especially living in Area Minneapolis.

Well in a post apocalyptic world it's nice to know you'd be good at something. :thumb: |
For centuries, probably millennia, people have been predicting or preparing for the end of the world.
It just keeps turning. |
Here ya go. Reality check:

First aid kit, one big enough to treat 4 people 2 tarps 2 space blankets Lots of 550 cord Some bungee cords Camp knife with striker for fire starting Bag of cotton balls covered in petroleum jelly Water filter straw canteen Camping cookware set Compass Solar charger and battery pack Headlamp with extra batteries Extra socks Gloves All of this fits in a small 24 hour pack that fits in the tool box. Might be missing some stuff. This pack is a supplement my bigger kit/will get my by until I get my bigger kit. I also have a couple pouches attached to it that is for ammo, 9mm for my pistol I always carry, and 5.56 for my rifle |
Save your dryer lint guys for fire starter
Also having a hand torch and a shit load of those green camping propane bottles they sell at walmart |

Can't say enough good things about a simple cotton ball covered in vaseline, there are sooo many fire starting products out there but none can touch them for effectiveness or price... just one burns like hell for about 5 minutes with just a few sparks |

Only time we bugged out was when a cat 1 hurricane hit our house straight on. The total “damage”was a bunch of palm tree frawns in the pool. Got $500 from FEMA to refill the refrigerator. |

Plenty of ammo, if push comes to shove, I’ll become a modern day alchemist and turn that lead into gold as needed.

Fatties gonna die first. Just remember that too. Some weekly cardio now would probably better your odds more than what's in your bag..
|
It cracks me up people saying ammo. You gonna shoot someone to take their shit???
Guns and ammo are for self defense and harvesting meat. |
Think just about all the people on life supporting meds. My wife can't survive without her seizure medication as well as her COPD shit. I take meds for Heart failure that can't be just quit.

Are you going to eat it, burn it for a fire, build a shelter out of gold? If things really turn to shit, people will trade useable stuff, not worthless money etc. |
No mention of masks or hand sanitizer smh
