He was one of the best young safeties in the league until he had a down year last year.

But that was in a new scheme.

My guess is he’ll get back on track in KC and outperform this contract.

This. We basically have two safeties that can move around to either spot. There is no more FS and SS. We just have safeties.

Chieftain 03-14-2022 08:44 PM

A 25 year old entering his prime Reid at that price is a better value than a 30 year old declining Matthieu who would demand a lot more for the same term.
Smart sensible move by the Bertmeister. And fresh blood for our secondary.

Brett Veach isn’t going to pay big money for 30 year olds except for a rare exception like EDGE this year (all the free pass rushers are around 30).

These are the types of signings that you make when you want to get value.

What about the toxic fan favorite money badger

The Franchise 03-14-2022 08:47 PM

Chiefs signed S Justin Reid, formerly of the Texans, to a three-year, $31.5 million contract.

With Tyrann Mathieu widely expected to walk in free agency, Reid arrives as the Honey Badger's replacement. The No. 68 overall pick of the 2018 draft, Reid has been starting since his rookie year. He was better in 2018-19 before a team-wide malaise took hold of the Texans in 2020-21. Rather amazingly, Reid has only one career pick, but he has had good seasons both in coverage and as a run defender. He just hasn't put it all together in a while. The Chiefs clearly believe he will be able to do so in a much better environment.

He spells his last name the correct way.

Draft info coming out of Stanford
6-1, 204, 4.40 40 time.

2021 stats - 13 games, 2 Ints, 66 tackles, 4 PDs

PFF ranked at 82 on their list of free agents

Quote:

Reid’s first two seasons in Houston were extremely promising, with his 80.4 overall grade across 2018 and 2019 ranking 17th among safeties with at least 300 snaps over the two seasons. Reid’s 87.0 coverage grade ranked 13th, and his 14.1% forced incompletion rate ranked 19th among safeties with at least 25 targets into their coverage in that span. Since then, things have trended in the wrong direction, ultimately culminating with Reid being a healthy scratch in Week 12 for disciplinary reasons. It seems very likely that the Houston Texans were more to blame than Reid for his decline in play, so perhaps he can get his career back on track in a more stable environment.

Strengths:
– Capable playmaker at the catch point

Weaknesses:
– Eye discipline
– Tackling

Scheme Fit/Role:
SPOT STARTER/DEPTH PIECE AT SAFETY: Reid's film doesn't suggest that he deserves better than the role he's presently in. The soft zone looks probably don't do much to help, but Reid is often unable to range to the ball and doesn't boast the tracking skills to take good angles and make sound tackles.

Recent Injury History:
Reid was listed on the injury report in 2021 for a knee ailment but hasn't missed practice or game time due to injury.

Contract Projection: Three years, $21 million ($7M per year, $13.5 million total guaranteed)

Bottom Line:
Reid is stuck in a bad situation schematically and lacks talent around him, but he's done little to raise his team's stock or his own in Houston. He's been productive in years prior, leaving open the possibility that he needs a change of scenery to return to form.

Reid plays a mixture of free safety, slot corner and box. I'm also thinking he would be a great replacement of Sorenson. HB plays more box than either Reid or Sorenson.

ForeverIowan 03-14-2022 08:57 PM

Good franchises do not pay for past performance out of loyalty. Appreciate the all-pro years and incredible run from honeybadger but it was pretty damn clear his decline started last year. There were games the dude looked like he wanted no part of making a tackle. He showed up his teammates in a demonstrative manner too many times for my liking and his "its never my fault" attitude got old. Hope he goes to a contender in the NFC and wish him well.

Love the Reid signing as well! The dude flies all over the field. Younger, faster, more explosive.

I'd let you and STaylor spit roast me on Zoom for all CP to watch. Realistically even if we just add a veteran DE the D could be really solid. This contract seems really affordable makes me think we still have a chance at bringing Ward back would also like to sign Gladney. That secondary right there is an upgrade over last years.

Don’t.

I can’t get my hopes up.

Let’s be realistic. Smith and JuJu.

Robinson and Smith is too exciting.

Oh I’m fine with either of those. I would just prefer Robinson.

Imagine one of those WRs, Smith and Ward. And then Devonte Wyatt in the 1st.

Do that and I won’t give a **** if Clark is the 3rd DE.

It will be interesting if Tyrann gets more money than Reid on the market

There has to be moves coming tomorrow for sure. I would guess the Clark restructure/cut and the Mahomes restructure.

Love this move. Sick of DB’s making “business decisions.” Rebuild this thing with PHYSICALITY.

Dante84 03-14-2022 09:09 PM

I could see Tyrann going to the Chargers purely for spite

We don't have to be under until Friday, correct? Or is it Wednesday?

If he were smart, he'd be looking around in the NFC.
