The All-Time Chiefs Single-Season Team

Random offseason thread. I looked at the AV value that pro-football-reference applies to players and picked out the highest single-season AVs in Chiefs history. (Sorry, returners not available since they don't define that as a position.)

I let players move to similar positions, e.g., FS and SS, LG and RG, HB and FB, etc.

Here's the first-string team. It's a 3-4.

RB Priest Holmes 2002
RB Abner Haynes 1962
QB Patrick Mahomes 2018
WR Otis Taylor 1966
WR Tyreek Hill 2018
TE Travis Kelce 2018
OT Willie Roaf 2004
G Brian Waters 2004
C Tim Grunhard 1991
G Will Shields 2002
OT Mitchell Schwartz 2018
K Jan Stenerud 1969
P Jerrel Wilson 1968
S Deron Cherry 1984
S Johnny Robinson 1968
CB Albert Lewis 1989
CB Emmitt Thomas 1974
OLB Derrick Thomas 1991
OLB Bobby Bell 1969
ILB Willie Lanier 1973
ILB Sherrill Headrick 1962
DE Jared Allen 2007
DE Neil Smith 1995
DT Buck Buchanan 1969

Here's the second team. It's a 4-3.

RB Larry Johnson 2006
RB Jamaal Charles 2010
QB Len Dawson 1962
WR Derrick Alexander 2000
WR Dwayne Bowe 2010
TE Tony Gonzalez 2004
OT Jim Tyrer 1967
G Ed Budde 1966
C Jack Rudnay 1976
G Dave Szott 1997
OT John Alt 1990
K Nick Lowery 1982
P Jim Arnold 1984
S Bobby Hunt 1962
S Eric Berry 2016
CB James Hasty 1997
CB Dale Carter 1995
OLB Justin Houston 2014
OLB E.J. Holub 1962
MLB Derrick Johnson 2015
DE Art Still 1984
DE Mel Branch 1960
DT Dan Saleaumua 1995
DT Chris Jones 2020

This concludes the thread. You may comment on it if you wish, or you can merely think about it while walking in the woods.

Pound for pound I'm going say that hardest hitter would be Deron Cherry. We would deliver the wood.

Willie Roaf actually literally ate linebackers but from what I remember Deron Cherry could hit like Ronny Lot.

Deron Cherry could knock out Eric Berry spirit.

Rasputin 03-15-2022 05:15 AM

You have Jared Allen 2007 out of position he was drafted as a long snapper. He often played out of position. Over rated long snapper taken too high in the draft.

Gary Barbaro would knock the dog shit out them.

I can relate, I’ve missed decades of Chiefs being deployed, always overseas and life happening. In six weeks I get transferred from S. Korea to Kuwait. Someday my life will be my own, lol.

Ugh. This offense would destroy anything in its path.

Seriously. I don't even think a all-time single-season Ravens, Steelers or Bears defense would be able to stop it.

He was awesome and played on some of our most horrendous teams. Him and Art Still deserved better.

Imagine having all these guys in their prime on our roster!

Gary Cooper 03-15-2022 08:07 AM

I've blocked 2007-2009 from my memory. Does 2007 Jared Allen really deserve first team status?

Stewie 03-15-2022 08:28 AM

If similar positions are allowed (RG to LG, etc.) I would have John Alt miles ahead of Mitchell Scwartz. That guy was a beast for years.

scho63 03-15-2022 08:38 AM

The talent we squandered over the last 40 years with no star QB is horrific.

Fans from very few other teams can understand what it is like now for us in KC.

Mahomes is like Jesus Christ himself has returned from the dead.

oldman 03-15-2022 08:38 AM

I'll take a backseat to RM on any season's performance previous to 1963, but I agree with just about all the other choices. For those of you that never saw MR. Willie Lanier play, you missed something. The NFL can talk about Huff and Butkus all day long, but #63 was the best MLB I've ever seen. Some of the others: ET, master of the bump and run. Deron Cherry, great cover guy and he'd lay the wood. When you consider that Stenerud played about half his games on the field at old Muni in '69 and still made 77%, it makes you wonder what he could have done on the sweet turf of Arrowhead.

I know it's based on ratings and single seasons but I would like to replace Larry Johnson with my favorite all time chief the Nigerian nightmare. I know lj is probably the better back but if stewie can field a team with 3 guards and one tackle, then damnit I want to see okoye run behind that line. 😁

Alt and Schwartz are both tackles. Alt played LT, but for an all-time team I'd have Roaf at LT and Alt at RT.

Well, shit. I see now that you make a good point. I hadn't noticed Haynes on there but I'd undoubtedly replace him with 2010 or 2013 Jamaal Charles.

Either way, that offense would be filthy.

Pound for pound, I think Barbaro may have been the hardest hitter in Chiefs history. When I put the list together, I was thinking about who the best player was that didn't make the list. Barbaro immediately came to mind.

Given that this is the best single-season performances, I'm a little surprised that Okoye didn't make the running back list for 1989. Bill Maas is another good player not on it, and I'm surprised that Harrison Butker and Dustin Colquitt didn't claim slots at their positions.

Really? Okoye was definitely before my time. 1480 yards and 12 TDs is pretty good but he only had 2 catches for 12 yards in an entire season lol

That production doesn't hold a candle to Priest Holmes from 2002-2004, Larry Johnson in 2005-2006, Jamaal Charles in 2010, 2012-2014 or even Kareem Hunt in 2017.

We've been really lucky as Chiefs fans when it comes to RB.

rico 03-15-2022 10:29 AM

Man, imagine Jamaal Charles with Patrick Mahomes as QB… Jamaal was a home run threat every play, it seemed, even with opposing D’s preparing to stop the run with Cassel being our QB.

Yeah, good point. I don't know the formula that pfr uses to calculate AV. I just know that Okoye led the league in rushing that year. But he also didn't have the ypc and/or TD production that the other running backs did that you mention. We have indeed been blessed in the running back department.

Yes also Burress would bring it too.

I saw Cherry as more a smart fitness safety that was more sure tackler than a hard-hitting guy.

That was my impression of Cherry as well He certainly wasn't afraid of run support, but I saw his strength as ball tracking out in center field.

Barbaro could also play center field, but I saw him as more of an enforcer I still think he'd be a Hall of Famer now if he didn't move to the USFL.

He was a big dude for a safety, too. I know that Clark's not a big guy, but check him out next to Barbaro, who was a freakin' free safety.

I was a big Kevin Ross fan hard for me not to pull out Dale Carter and insert him. Tough category because Dale was great just too much trouble. Flowers was a good one too but choose to be a chitty charger.

Rain Man 03-15-2022 10:45 AM

Barbaro next to pro bowl CB Gary Green and (presumably) pro bowl SS Lloyd Burruss. Look at our free safety towering over a pretty darn good strong safety.

scho63 03-15-2022 11:39 AM

I forgot about Lloyd Burress.

Ross, Cherry, Lewis and Burress. Impressive shit right there.

I remember the 3-4 years those guys blocked like 15 punts and FG's.

Rain Man 03-15-2022 12:37 PM

I also have to note that the uniforms in Post 25 are gorgeous. That's good design right there.

How did Stephone Paige not make second team?

Rain Man 03-15-2022 12:57 PM

Hall of Famers

1st string offense (and kicker) - 3 (though several aren't eligible yet)
1st string defense - 6
2nd string offense - 2
2nd string defense - 0

I'm a big Paige fan, but his best season was 1,021 yards, and this is all based on peak seasons.
