Goat Meat - Would You?
Have you eaten goat/chevron and if so... how did you like it and how did it compare, in your opinion, to beef?
Would you eat goat/chevron? --- But... why? Meat prices are skyrocketing and who the hell knows if it will even be feasible to even afford to buy meat and/or if it will even be available. I'm not thinking in a conspiracy theorist "the world government is going to make people stop eating meat" kinda way. Just in a cost and general availability kinda way. I just picked up 5 goats (4 registered "Fainting" goats and a ND weather) and the intention is that these are going to be my friends and pets. Their children OTOH... the pretty ones sell (they can go from $300-$500 a piece) and the ones that don't hang around for 5 months then go into the freezer with all organs, scraps, and a lot of the stew meat being gathered and going to the dogs. https://i.imgur.com/PfpNfCa.jpeg 4 pictured, one getting here today Ok, but... why GOATS? 2 big reasons. 1) I'm out here on this homestead all by myself now and the last thing I need is to get sideswiped by an animal considerably larger than me and while cows tend to be docile... I'm just not willing to risk it. I chose Myotonic goats specifically because they tend to be friendly and are among the smallest of the meat goats. Plus, the fact that they stiffen up when spooked makes it that much easier to chase them down if they slip out. 2) $$$ They eat 30-40% less than cows do per pound of meat produced meaning I have more than enough hay to feed them year around with no issues. Also, they are considerably less expensive than cows in terms of cost for the actual animal itself. I'll be butchering them myself thus will not incur any processing fees. |
Absolutely I would, there was a great Bourdain episode from years back, where some bedouins slather down a whole carcass with all of these exotic oils and array of spices and baked it under the sand... it looked incredible
Love me some lamb as well, who doesn't like a gyro? |
Birria and more importantly quesabirria is life
|
I've eaten goat. Meat is meat.
Remember that if we're ever stranded in a plane crash. |
Lamb is really good. Goat is probably a little tougher I would figure

When in Greece...

Pretty sure I had goat in Croatia, it was either goat or lamb I can't remember. It was good either way.
I want to try horse meat |
If this dude is cooking it, I'm eating it

Sure. Meat is meat. Just give me a good cut.
|
I normally just stare at goats but I guess I could try the meat too next time (after they explode, of course).
|
Ironically enough, just today, a friend of mine volunteered to go buy a goat shoulder if I would smoke it....
Having had goat on a few occasions, that is an easy "yes" for me..... |

I've had it in a stew and it was okay. They have crazy eyes. I'd never own one.
Goat cheese. :Lin: |
I’ve ate it not bad if done right. But beef is by far superior . Don’t be intimidated by beef cause of size , you can handle them just don’t go to local sale barn and buy someone’s crazy ass junk.

It's one of my favorite dishes at the local Indian buffet I frequent.

I hope Patrick Mahomes II doesn't see this thread.
|
Absolutely. I will eat the shit out of any land bearing animal.

Now that it is just me... I'm gonna have more chicken, eggs, and red meat than I will be able to consume on my own. Thus the idea of feeding the dogs from the animals here. |

Perhaps one day I will mess with a cow but for now... I need to ensure that I'm not gonna have a critter take me out at the knees and there is ****-all I can do about it. |

It literally costs me nothing to feed them. If I do this right I, essentially, have a lifetime supply of meat for the initial investment of $1,500 (in livestock... fencing and their home was a rather pricey expense as well TBH). |

Going to Jamaica every year I’ve enjoyed quite a few of their delicacies. Curry Goat is very good, same with Ox tail.
|
I've never eaten goat (that I know of), but I would.
Side note, we're going to need a video of you scaring the bejesus out of those fainting goats. |

Growing up, my dad always raised meat goats. Boer goats were what he raised. The meat is like most other meat, it's all in how you cook it or season it.
If you are looking to expand your goat herd, you might look into the Boer. They're a strudy breed and they pack quite a bit of meat on their frames. |

It's better than mutton.
Young animals are way better than older animals. Lamb is better than mutton. Veal is better than a young steer and better than a 1 year old steer. A butchered 10 week meat chicken is better than that 2-year old layer or rooster. Young pigs rule. Less than a year and they produce the best meat. Bacon, bacon, bacon... Ribs, chops, butt, ham.... |
I’ve eaten goat, and drank goats milk.
But as others have said, you can keep the goat cheese. sec |
Goat is fantastic.
Curried goat at Indian Restaurants and jerked goat at Jamaican Restaurants. |
Also goat cheese is great.
|
I had goat stew at an African restaurant. Was good and would eat again.
|
Goat, lamb, buffalo, venison, elk, etc. are all great if prepared correctly.
|
Someone needs to eat the goat before the season starts.
|
We had goat several times while in Mexico, unless they told you what it was I wouldn't have noticed and thought it was probably beef. I'm sure it depends on how you cook it but what I had was great!! There's quite a few people in the usa that eat goat I believe.
|
Were I weirded out by goat meat, I’d revisit the concept of eating meat. Not sure I could go full Janx and butcher the thing myself, but that’s probably just my ignorance speaking. I wouldn’t know where to start and I’ll probably have to occasion to wish I knew.

Goat meat is delicious. Your Mom likes to cook it for me after I finish banging her.

Nope, thanks. I am ok with the beef.
If i want to eat something spicy - prefer to go to Chilis. Heard some weird comments about them in the past, but we can always leave feedback about them here. Reviews are incredibly important in my opinion. |
I've eaten plenty of goat in my lifetime. If you like middle eastern food, you've likely eaten it. Although some people I've talked to say it's too gamey, I've never found that to be the case, but I'm not a picky eater and will try most anything once.

No, but they're super cute and I'd much rather own one for a pet. JFC people just eat anything these days!
|
I'd buy one just to tie it up in my truck bed and beat it mercilessly with a hickory stick when I get lubed up with jimmie beam.

There's an Indian (dot not feather) place here that sells goat dishes, but only Friday and Saturday. Not sure why.

I’ve had goat meat twice. It’s nasty and if I’m not a staving Asian nomad I’ll never eat it again.

A herd of those mother ****ers "licked" salt off the side of my nearly brand new pickup 4 years ago. They didn't just lick, the ****ing used their teeth, too. The owner walked a few of them into the field and ended their existence. Cost him almost 2k. |
Kill the goat!
Kill the goat! Kill the goat! Kill the goat! https://media.giphy.com/media/EKgP7ZNTlyB9u/giphy.gif |
