Quote:

3. Linebacker Leo Chenal shot the gap and blew up a running play in the backfield during team drills.
The Chiefs utilized a portion of Wednesday's practice to work on team running drills, providing Chenal with an opportunity to show off what he did best at the University of Wisconsin. Chenal – who racked up 115 tackles and 18.5 tackles-for-loss last season for the Badgers – shot the gap with tremendous closing speed during one of those running plays, stopping the ball-carrier in the backfield. It was undoubtedly one of the top defensive plays of the morning.
Chenal is still carving out his role on Kansas City's defense, but his ability to stop the run could earn him some playing time in those situations early on.

4. Linebacker Willie Gay made a handful of plays.
Another defensive player who stood out on Wednesday was Gay, who jarred the ball free from the ball-carrier for a forced fumble during team drills before intercepting a pass in the end zone a bit later. It marked the second interception of this year's camp for Gay, who also hauled in a pick-six during 7-on-7 drills last Friday.
Gay was asked about Wednesday's interception following practice, and as it turns out, the third-year linebacker has some lofty goals in mind when it comes to taking the ball away through the air.
"[Those things] give me a lot of confidence. It's my goal to lead linebackers in the NFL in interceptions this year," Gay said. "If Patrick throws me some, I know the other quarterbacks will because they're not as good as him."
That's a realistic goal considering Gay's performance so far in this year's camp.

5. Tight end Noah Gray put together a strong practice.
Gray was on the receiving end of several passes on Wednesday, including a physical grab on a slant during red zone team drills and two touchdown receptions later in the practice. Gray's first score occurred on the next snap following the aforementioned catch, as the second-year tight end found space in the corner of the end zone to haul in Patrick Mahomes' pass. His next score, which took place a bit later, was in the back of the end zone after Mahomes extended the play outside the pocket.
The former fifth-round pick earned a significant role on special teams last season, but if he can stack multiple performances like Wednesday's, he could earn more playing time on offense.
The Chiefs will return to practice on Thursday. For more information on training camp or for a schedule of practices, click here.

ToxSocks 08-03-2022 01:11 PM

Man i really hope Gay can stay healthy this season. He's the one i'm most looking at for a breakout year. The Chiefs need it and he needs it.

FloridaMan88 08-03-2022 01:11 PM

Willie Gay is going to abuse opposing offenses like a vacuum cleaner this season.

"New".

Allen/Diggs doesn't qualify.

This is a Mahomes/JJSS/MVS/Whomever slight.

ToxSocks 08-03-2022 01:43 PM

I can see why Mahomes/JJSS etc wouldn't make top 5. There's nothing sexy about our new WR's. It's more of a slight to our WR's than Mahomes.

But 8,9,10 are bum**** reeruned.

Yea, I was giving that one a pass because Brown is a stud, but the different between Mahomes and Hurts is even worse.

Interesting about Pacheco. When these national guys say stuff like that, it is usually based on chatter from coaches/GM rather than observation of a few plays. Tells me the guy is a lock for the roster. A little disappointing Kinnard's name not mentioned at RT. Struggling?

Kinnard got some mentions yesterday, sounded like a mixed bag... won a few, lost a few

R Clark 08-03-2022 02:46 PM

Just watched gay’s interview and was really impressed also he looks a lot bigger than I realized.

BlackOp 08-03-2022 03:06 PM

Charles ran a 4.38... Pacheco 4.37 and 16 pounds heavier.

Obviously, it takes a lot more than pure speed to be a great RB... but this kid is a burner.

Nile Davis ran 4.37 at 225...so stats arent everything.

Gravedigger 08-03-2022 03:19 PM

How long does Chiefs training camp practice normally last? We were going to come up one day next week but didn't know if it's an hour long, two hours long, there's not much information online. Just when it starts in the morning, but as far as how long each practice usually lasts, it won't give any information. So I'm asking the peeps who've been there so far, what time does practice usually end?

RealSNR 08-03-2022 03:35 PM

Kinnard might just have to be a guard, guys. That was always a strong possibility, and there’s nothing necessarily wrong with it. He’ll be an amazing guard, I’m sure

He won't be alone in that. If the DL can keep the opposing OL busy, the trio of Gay, Bolton, and Chenal will surely **** some people up. It'll bring tears to my old eyes!!

I'm not worried about Kinnard. He's a 5th rounder that we knew was raw, at least for NFL play. My hope is he progresses enough this year to sit Wylie's ass on the bench or better, on a Greyhound out of town.

Did BV kill it again with Pacheco? I hope so. Let's get behind those hogs and run the ball right down the other guys' throats!!

I hope he's fantastic but his production at Rutgers was underwhelming. His YPC dropped every year and he never caught 20 passes. Hopefully this was a product of the rest of the team being terrible.

Maybe. Could be a different story in deeper leagues, especially if he shines in pre-season. Toub has already locked Pacheco in as a return man. If you're in a league that awards points for return yards then that adds to his appeal.

They would tell you the same. it's about working techniques with a live opponent. It's in no way indicative of actual ability.

1. there is no reading or reacting for the defender
2. the offensive lineman doesn't have another guy next to him. he's on an island, which literally never happens.
3. there's no QB adjustments, it's just a stationary target at the same drop back depth.

<blockquote class="twitter-tweet"><p lang="en" dir="ltr">Observing <a href="https://twitter.com/hashtag/Chiefs?src=hash&amp;ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw">#Chiefs</a> training camp Day 7 — some notes on this thread... with practice indoors, we&#39;re limited due to reporting guidelines, so I&#39;m going to do it a little differently today — but stick with me. <br><br>Let&#39;s go:</p>&mdash; Pete Sweeney (@pgsween) <a href="https://twitter.com/pgsween/status/1554974411194777600?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw">August 3, 2022</a></blockquote> <script async src="https://platform.twitter.com/widgets.js" charset="utf-8"></script>

Here’s a couple of interesting ones from that thread.

<blockquote class="twitter-tweet"><p lang="en" dir="ltr">1) I think the Chiefs are richer at TE than I thought heading into training camp. Prior to a quad issue, Jody Fortson looked back to normal. But in Fortson&#39;s absence, Noah Gray and Jordan Franks have flashed. I think No. 83 may deserve as much attention as No. 88 is getting.</p>&mdash; Pete Sweeney (@pgsween) <a href="https://twitter.com/pgsween/status/1554974421722570754?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw">August 3, 2022</a></blockquote> <script async src="https://platform.twitter.com/widgets.js" charset="utf-8"></script>

<blockquote class="twitter-tweet"><p lang="en" dir="ltr">I think it will be hard for the <a href="https://twitter.com/hashtag/Chiefs?src=hash&amp;ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw">#Chiefs</a> to keep four running backs given the talented WR and TE rooms... and keeping in mind they will keep FB Mike Burton. <br><br>On Pacheco... He&#39;s reminding a lot of us of Kareem Hunt... except he runs faster, a 4.37 40-yard dash. (2/2)</p>&mdash; Pete Sweeney (@pgsween) <a href="https://twitter.com/pgsween/status/1554974425723928576?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw">August 3, 2022</a></blockquote> <script async src="https://platform.twitter.com/widgets.js" charset="utf-8"></script>

<blockquote class="twitter-tweet"><p lang="en" dir="ltr">5) I think the new-look balanced offense is going to take the pressure off Patrick Mahomes to consistently look down the field for the old No. 10. I think JuJu and MVS may finish closer in yardage than people think, giving KC a real chance for three 1,000-yard pass-catchers.</p>&mdash; Pete Sweeney (@pgsween) <a href="https://twitter.com/pgsween/status/1554974429494509569?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw">August 3, 2022</a></blockquote> <script async src="https://platform.twitter.com/widgets.js" charset="utf-8"></script>

Pacheco is a guy that I think will flame out when his lacking vision in real games is put unrest the microscope. I’m not a big fan of his, but Bienemy has taken marginal RBs and madd them into competent players snd in some cases borderline stars.

In videos I watched of Pacheco in college, his vision was terrible.

I’d love to be wrong about him, but I still see the Rb room as follows, in terms of overall ability…

1) McKinnon
2) Jones
3) Clyde
4) Pacheco

Maybe he needs glasses?

Maybe he just needs a real coach with a real system.

Assuming the vision thing is real of course, and not just some made up CP shit.

the problem is we don’t have a spot for another guard and IMO he can’t play RT in this league unless he drastically improves in skill set and technique.

I was there on the first day in pass snd focused on him multiple times and was consistently disappointed in his ability to compete with anyone on our DL.

He definitely flashed while I was there.

I had to ask who 84 was at least twice.

Now I haven't watched film but from what I understand, Pacheco's vision problems had a lot to do with getting the ball and immediately being hit by like four guys in the backfield. Like, he had happy feet because he was desperate to just get to the line of scrimmage.

That's not a great way to test vision for a RB in my opinion.

His QB, OL, team, and probably coaching staff were pretty bad.

Yeah that Rutgers team, specifically the O-line, was horrible. I feel like we may have gotten a steal in the 7th. A Bernard Venkman special, if you will.

His OL got virtually zero push and one lineman in particular looked like a turnstile.

Pacheco looks like he has great hands and can get to the edge and make people miss in space.
My gripe with him is it doesn't look like he knows how to set up blocks and make something out of nothing...which I think you have to do in the NFL unless you play for a team like the 49ers

FringeNC 08-03-2022 06:46 PM

How good of a pass-blocker is Ronald Jones? That could put him over the top if he's on the bubble, but if he sucks, who he is beating out to get a roster spot?
